A Miniature Module with Ferocious Firepower

Polyend debuted their Tracker workstation to critical acclaim for its streamlined interface, deep editing capabilities, and blistering suite of sampling, sequencing, sound design, and synthesis tools (just to name a few). Beat-crafters and synthesists here at Sweetwater are proud to introduce Polyend’s newest addition to the fold: Tracker Mini. Not only does the Mini include many of the features found in its full-sized counterpart, it actually makes many welcome improvements to functionality, onboard storage, signal pathways, hardware options, and more. The Tracker Mini delivers a comprehensive suite of production, recording, and composition tools in a portable form factor that doesn’t pull any punches!

Mobility-minded design, studio-grade sound

While the Tracker Mini may lack the FM radio and endless encoding capabilities of its larger sibling, the Tracker Mini packs all of the possibilities of its desktop counterpart into a pint-sized powerhouse. It’s totally optimized for producer and beat-makers on the go, and especially those interested in hybrid production setups. Battery-powered operation means up to eight hours of non-stop, studio-grade production, from basic ideas to complete mixing and mastering. A built-in, high-quality microphone lets you sample the world as you go, encouraging you to strike while the iron of inspiration is hot. Plus, improvements to the signal pathway means more headroom and premier stereo playback.

Paired with its vivid 5-inch LCD are 32 gamepad-quality buttons, picked specifically to ensure they can handle regular wear and tear of storage, portability, and the elements. More than 4,000 preloaded samples have been designed in consultation with professional artists and sound designers, conveniently arranged in genre-adjacent sample packs, allowing you to kickstart any project with seamless navigation. Onboard sampling memory has quadrupled, with up to eight minutes and 64 megabytes of storage, and the Tracker Mini can manage audio over USB, unlike the desktop module. Additionally, project files are cross-compatible, allowing you to start work with the Mini before moving into another workspace.

Build massive patterns

Polyend Tracker Mini projects hold up to a massive 48 instruments with 256 patterns and 128 steps per pattern — so compositions are only limited by your imagination! And they all play back in the iconic vertical column format, which tracker aficionados argue is the ideal way to compose electronic music. Beyond the sample effects section, the Polyend Tracker Mini comes equipped with numerous compositional tools, including automatic pattern filling, per-step effects, sample rolls, and batch and global parameter editing. After you’ve constructed your patterns, the Song Arranger makes it easy to assemble them into a finished piece, which you can save to a microSD card as a stereo master or as stems to upload to your DAW.

Endless sound manipulation

Like the trackers of yore, the Polyend Tracker Mini is primarily a sample-based music production tool. And, to that end, it includes potent sample manipulation capabilities. Tracker Mini lets you upload samples via microSD Card, the included USB-A to microSD adapter, or capture them in real-time through its built-in mic or line input. Once you’ve got your sample, you can manually trim it or let the Tracker Mini do it for you automatically. Then, it’s time to shape, mangle, and transmogrify your sample with a deep toolkit of pitch-shifters, filters, reverbs, envelope generators, reverse and ping-pong modes, and granular and wavetable synthesis.

MIDI-equipped and performance-ready

While Polyend Tracker Mini stays true to the essential elements that make trackers what they are, it expands on their functionality in several incredible ways. First, Polyend Tracker Mini is MIDI-enabled via 3.5mm TRS jacks, unlike many original trackers, so that it can integrate with all of your devices. Use it to sequence hardware synths or control it from your DAW or with an external controller. Additionally, Polyend Tracker Mini excels in a performance setting — it doesn’t merely play back the tracks. With assignable punch-in effects and on-the-fly editing capabilities, you can tweak and remix live, something not possible with software trackers. With audio-over-USB capabilities, you know every sound can be immaculately preserved.

Reviews

Loads of fun, and you can do much more than chiptunes with it.
I have the original Polyend Tracker, and really enjoy it, so when this came out it was an instant preorder to see how having something I could travel with might work.

It's more of the original Polyend Tracker, in a smaller box. Loads of fun. If you're familiar with trackers like Renoise, or from the Amiga days, you should feel right at home getting up and playing. If trackers are new to you, catch a YouTube video and expect to spend a few hours fiddling around. It's about as big as a large paperback book --- think a large-print one you'd pick up at an airport. Good construction, clear screen. Buttons could be a little firmer and clickier, especially if you're used to its bigger sibling, but they're not bad.

This thing is loads of fun. It has loads of headroom for samples, and the sound design features are more powerful than you think just looking at the manual. I've been able to get everything from annoying chiptunes to some passable ambient out of it.

It is sample-oriented, though --- but it comes with loads of good samples. Expect to add your own, and poke around with all of them in the various editors to get the sounds you want. If you're really looking for grounds-up synthesis, you might be a little disappointed with the sound design capabilities. Again, have a a look at some of the YouTube videos out there (get ideas from both the Tracker Mini.& original Tracker videos) to get ideas for sound design.

The effects are fine for what they do. I wouldn't mind a bit better reverb.

I've not used performance mode much, but it seems fun, and in seeing it in others' hands I'm impressed. Being able to build up a song in the song arranger and then just hit render to get a finished product for minor retouching on the PC is really nice.

The included adapters and carrying case are a nice touch, too. With the case and a pair of wired earbuds, the whole thing fits nicely in my iPad bag for coffee shop noodling.
Music background: Amateur, electronic music, piano, flute. Work in the music hardware industry.
First Tracker experience (v1.0)
For my situation Tracker Mini has been great (not having time to sit for hours to work on a track) turning it on and picking up immediately where I left off has been the most useful for me. Learning the basics was easy and finding interesting ways to combine effects and samples has been fun.

Improvements I hope for: being able to use a "Track" as an "instrument", essentially adding 2 more fx slots but reducing the track count.

I hope the 2 onboard synths can get some new/advanced features in an update, they are a bit underwhelming but I'm still trying them with various samples.
