Bundled Item: Hotone Ampero II Press Passive Expression and Switching Pedal

Hotone Ampero II Press Passive Expression and Switching Pedal

Sells separately for $88.99

As the current guitar-playing landscape continues to grow and evolve, the opportunities for immense expression across multiple instruments, devices, hardware, and software near-limitlessly expand your creative horizons. Hotone developed the Ampero II Press pedal to do exactly that, capable of both detailed expression and rock-solid switching controls that can be used simultaneously with distinct destinations. This evocative 2-in-1 tool teems with sonic-contouring capabilities, impressing Sweetwater’s gigging guitarists with versatile controls and satisfying tactility, with an actual footswitch situated behind the expression-pedal surface. The road-ready Ampero II Press features a rugged aluminum-alloy chassis, guaranteeing long-term, laser-accurate expression with virtually any compatible device. Best of all, it’s completely passive. Hotone’s Ampero II Press is ready to roll whenever you are, from studio to stage, with no power supply needed to maximize your expression and seize your sonic domain.

Reviews

impressive
fender has come a long way from the cyber twin. this is honestly everything the reviews have said.
easy to use, easy to program, absolutely stupid powerful with enough routing options to cover any application i can imagine, and probably some i can't. it's like suddenly having an entire music store in a box. i haven't used it as a computer recording interface, so unable to comment there.
yes, the bundle with the expression pedal is pricey, but so worth it.
one reviewer commented that the vox models were "horrible". i'll agree that some of the vox presets are not to my taste, but i built a preset with an ac-30, a klon clone pedal and maestro echoplex in about 10 minutes, complete with footswitch assignments, that sounds pretty darn good.
good job fender.

REALLY REALLY GOOD out of the gate!
I've had about an hour to play with this. Here's my initial impression:

1. Amps - The fender stuff is SPOT ON for obvious reasons. They used their tone master technology. My favorite might be the virtual version of the working man's tube amp, the Bassbreaker! The Vox amp is VERY GOOD, the 5150 is also spot on. The Marshall stuff ... meh, just okay. No better or worse than the helix versions though. I'm sure there will be lots of updates to get these right over time. The controls are all there and do exactly what you expect on the physical versions of the amps. - 8/10

2. Effects - The choices are lacking at the moment but almost everything you need is there minus the boss acoustic simulator which I use regularly. Again I'm sure they'll add this down the road. One pedal they included that NOBODY does is the Nobels ODR-1. I've been clamoring for that pedal to Line 6 FOR YEARS. The effects they DO include sound GREAT! They're modeled extremely well, respond exactly as you expect, and interact with the chosen amp exactly how you would expect that amp to take the pedal. I'm sure the selection will improve over time but right now it's a little sparse for the pro level category. - 7/10

3. Hardware - Well built, quality components, sturdy feel, reasonable footprint and weight, internal power supply (big plus to me), rugged footswitches with rotary function and BRIGHT led rings, large easy to read and use touchscreen (touchscreen???? WHAT????), led jule power indicator (nice touch fender). The switches are a little tight in their spacing but I have small feet so no big deal. I utilize and prefer a built in expression pedal but I understand why they opted for an external pedal for weight and space considerations. Overall very pleased here - 9/10

4. Software - Big easy to see and understand pedal board style chains, picture representations of all amps and pedals, fantastic workflow. Being able to click on a component and have it's settings readily visible and represented on the rotary knobs / footswitches or changeable from the touchscreen makes this unit very easy to understand and tweak on the fly. I haven't even bothered with the manual. The desktop software looks and acts exactly like the touchscreen on the unit. The workflow is well thought out and built for the guitarist that likes tactile knobs on their amps and pedals. My lead player is 63 and uses a reverb deluxe and pedals into the front of that amp. He is NOT very tech savvy and he could easily build a usable patch to mimic his rig in minutes without much instruction. That part is 9/10. However, with it just launching, the desktop app and touch screen are a bit quirky and sensitive to navigate. The screen doesn't always catch the touch input and you have to touch a second time. The desktop app is the same, doesn't always respond to a mouse click. Again I'm sure they'll refine this but right now that's a 7/10 - Overall 7.5/10

5. Other - The seamless patch switching spillover and trails are INCREDIBLE!!!! No cutoff when changing patches which Helix CAN'T TRULY DO. I don't know about Quad Cortex or any of the other big dogs but I know Line 6 can't do this. Button flexibility is great. I can quickly set up new patches with the equivalent of Helix's snapshots or stompbox mode or a combination of both. No complaints there. Surprised they didn't have a gig bag available at launch or even include one at this price but that's nit picking. Routing options are every bit as flexible as the Helix floor. 8/10

Overall I'm going to say out of the box this is a solid 8/10 with some quirks and missing pedals / features that they'll iron out over time. At the end of the day though this is VERY GIGGABLE out of the box without much of a learning curve and EXCELLENT modeled tones. It's not a Helix killer out of the gate due to the Helix's maturity. And it REALLY depends on how Fender supports this. They don't have the best record for digital solution support (I'm looking at you original Fender Mustang Floor). IF they get the support right and make a commitment to really improving and adding to this product the way Line 6 has with the Helix family, then this will be a HOME RUN. I can't wait to gig this baby!!!!

A note about the Hotone Expression Pedal
First, the TMP gets five stars, it has exceeded my needs and expectations. This concerns this specific bundle that includes the Hotone expression pedal. I was trying to use it as a combination wah/volume pedal with the TMP: when switched off, a volume pedal, when switched on, a wah. I watched several YouTube videos on how to set it up and followed every detail, but every time I tried to switch on the wah it was momentary, that is, it refused to stay activated on the wah setting when the toe switch was released from the depressed position. After much hair pulling, I contacted Sweetwater and found out that that is how the pedal is designed, not to be latching, but momentary. So it wasn't my setup in the TMP, but the pedal itself wasn't designed to switch in the manner I needed it to. So, if you want a momentary switch in a foot pedal, then that is what the Hotone will provide, but if you're looking for a latching pedal, then this bundle is not what your looking for. My advice is to bite the bullet and buy the Mission SP1-TMP if you want a latching pedal.
