“Play it, James”

From serving as Elvis’ sideman for the better part of a decade to shredding up the studio with a 6-string southern twang, James Burton’s influence on the development of rock and country guitar is simply incalculable. The Fender James Burton Telecaster harnesses his half-century-plus of guitar mastery, resulting in an instrument with exceptional playability and unmatched tonal versatility. This guitar starts with an ultra-light basswood body, loaded with a trio of Specially Designed James Burton single-coil pickups, 5-way switching, and an S-1 series switch to provide a sweeping array of tones befitting a studio maestro like James. Next, the maple-on-maple neck’s vintage-style frets and modern 9.5-inch radius combine the best specs of old and new for a slick, speedy feel perfect for high-speed chicken pickin’ finesse. Finally, the James Burton is finished with a sleek Paisley Flame finish — a nod to James’ iconic Paisley Tele that he often played onstage with Elvis during his Las Vegas period.

Custom James Burton single-coil pickups

This guitar may technically be considered a Tele, but the truth is that the James Burton Telecaster’s tonal Strat-meets-Tele versatility defies categorization. Three Special Design Burton pickups cover the entire Fender single-coil spectrum, sporting a 5-way switch that provides a plethora of tones ranging from James’ signature chicken pickin’ staccato strut to quacky Strat-style in-between tones and more. Moreover, the S-1 switch unlocks series circuitry on the two and four positions that Sweetwater guitarists favor when searching for a girthier tone with a hotter output.

Ultra-lightweight basswood body

Regarding tonewoods, basswood is about the lightest timber commonly found on a 6-string. It’s often favored by musicians who spend the majority of their career slinging a guitar onstage, where playing a guitar with a double-digit weight can quickly lead to fatigue and sore shoulders. Beyond that, the James Burton Telecaster’s basswood body features a Paisley Flame finish for a touch of vintage hot-rod flair — a necessary aesthetic precaution for any guitarist expected to back up the King of Rock ’n’ Roll on a Las Vegas stage.

Robust ’60s “U” maple neck

The James Burton Telecaster’s neck comes equipped with a somewhat robust “U”-shaped maple neck — by no means a classic Tele baseball bat shape, but large enough to give your hands a proper grip when punching out your favorite twangy licks. Topped with a matching maple fingerboard and fast-playing vintage frets, this Tele features a modernized 9.5-inch radius to crank up the playability and performance, allowing for singing double-stop bends in any register without a hint of fret out.

Fender James Burton Telecaster Electric Guitar Features:

  • Ultra-lightweight basswood body finished with Paisley Flame attitude
  • Maple neck carved into a chunky ’60s “U” profile
  • Matching maple fingerboard with 21 vintage-style frets in a modern 9.5-inch radius
  • A trio of Specially Designed James Burton single coil-coil pickups split the difference between Strat quack and Tele twang
  • 5-way switch and S-1 series switch provide exceptional tonal versatility
  • 6-saddle string-through hardtail Stratocaster bridge offers enhanced intonation compared to a 3-barrel Tele bridge
  • Rock-solid Deluxe cast/sealed tuners with pearl buttons

Seriously Don't Hesitate... Get One!
This guitar is maybe the most slept on guitar in Fender's current production. The JB tele is for everyone... Tele fans, Strat fans, Les Paul fans, you name it. My parents purchased me this guitar as a college graduation present, and I haven't played another guitar since, its even beating out my Custom Shop tele I bought a few years ago. I own 6 teles, from Mexican to Custom Shop, and this guitar holds its own with all of them. First off is the neck. Butter. The shape is very similar to my 68 Paisley CS, just has a little more depth to it, but not by much. Feels like a real 68-69 tele to me. I play decently hard with acrylic nails and a heavy thumb pick, and it never feels like I'm playing on a thin neck with spaghetti strings, but at the same time doesn't feel like a baseball bat, similar to my Mexican JB Signature. Second is the tones. You can do it all with this guitar. I play 2-4 weddings a month, having to cover a wide array of tones from different guitarists using all sorts of gear, and this guitar makes it happen. It does a pretty convincing strat and LP in the 2 and 5 positions (S1 switch). Third of course is looks. Everyone compliments me on it. Out of my now 6 teles, 5 are paisley of some sort, mostly pink or aged pink. By far, this one has gotten the most people asking about it, if that's your thing.

I only have two gripes with the guitar, one small, one more significant. One, the frets are low and narrow. I play 10-52s on my teles, and it was pretty hard to bend strings comfortably. I went down to 9.5-50 and it felt wonderful. Just keep that in mind before you order. The second issue is grounding. Maybe my guitar is defective, but there is no ground running to the bridge. Most of the time the guitar doesn't hum or buzz at all. But when it does, you have to touch the control plate to get it to stop. Seems to only do it in older buildings. I played with my country band the other night with no issues, as well as my dance band the night after with no issues. But in the basement of an old club, it buzzed like crazy. I took a piece of copper tape and ran it to the bridge and that did the trick. Looks odd, but I don't mind. I'm guessing this won't be a huge issue for most people.

Overall, this might just be the best all around tele Fender makes. It does the tele thing while having multiple tricks up it's sleeve. I'm a huge Burton fan, but even if you aren't you should snag one of these. ESPECIALLY if you need to cover a mixed bag of tunes night to night.

A not well known GEM in the Fender lineup
I got the blue Burton Tele some years ago and the goal was to just use it now and then. I have an 89 PRS, American Deluxe Tele, a custom Gadow, a Les Paul Standard. Being a Burton fan when I tried the guitar, fell in love with it but still didn't wan to use it a ton ... that quickly changed. This guitar is AMAZING! If you need it sweet and gentle it does it. If you need to rock it out it does it. And everything in between. Over the years this guitar has become more and more the go-to guitar. Hard rock, southern rock, country, jazzy, classic rock, worship music ... this guitar does it all.
Have thought many times of having a 2nd of one of my guitars, seems I need the red version of this one. :-)
BTW, shout out to my SW rep, Ryan Clapper.
James Burton Tele
I purchased my Burton Telecaster a few years ago. I was so surprised at how well set up it was. Your fingers will certainly appreciate how easily it plays. Liked it so much I bought one of each color. I have a matched set tele and strat built in the Fender custom shop in 1994. They are very nice and play so well. But I have to say my Burton Teles may be a little easier to play. Although the custom shop models have 10 gauge strings on them. The Burtons have 9s. Maybe the difference. Still Fender did a fantastic job on these Burton telecasters. They will go to my grandsons when I'm done with them.
I have 4 MIA Tele's . They are great!!!!! However the options affecting tonality beat the stock Tele .
Most of all you are dealing with the #1 musical instrument dealer in America .
Music background: 50+ years
This is a well thought Fender amp . The 2 separate channels ar wonderful . Channel 1 has a differet tonality an channel 2 is pure chime. However
when the volume is turned to 10 it really growls .I played the with a James Burton Tele . WONDERFUL!!!!!!!
I have 3 MIAMERICA . The Burton offers more tonality options . The best part is you are dealing with the best musical retailer In America .
