In Pursuit of Rugged Metal Tone

After years of prog metal experimentation and an intense dedication to guitars and gear, John Browne’s expertise has culminated with the Tao-6 electric guitar from Schecter. With a unique tonewood marriage, a pair of red-hot Schecter USA humbuckers, and a sleek satin neck, the Tao-6 replicates the very style and tone of Browne’s everyday axe. Undoubtedly, a wealth of sonic sounds is key to his success. Therefore, Schecter included a volume push-pull control knob and 3-way pickup switch to ensure top-notch audial possibilities. Care to take things to the stage like the man himself? No problem: the Tao-6’s bridge and tuning machines offer excellent intonation stability. And with a highly visible side marker design, you’ll be able to wield the power of prog metal’s finest in any location possible.

Amicable tonewoods selection fuses beauty with bold tonality

Fans of John Browne’s metal-inspired sound will probably cut to the chase and head directly to the Tao-6’s electronics. But don’t be fooled — a combination of swamp ash, a flamed maple veneer, and a wenge/padauk neck all provide a bright and earthy acoustic tone. Apart from its sound, swamp ash also means less weight on your shoulders, making this axe a perfect onstage companion. Speaking of which, you’ll have no problem showing off this instrument, thanks to its choice collection of complimentary black hardware, a hipshot fixed bridge, and a deluxe satin finish. So, whether you plan on wielding it in the studio or during a performance, the Tao-6 doubles as a tonal weapon and a wearable work of art.

Made-to-scream USA Colossus and ChaosBreaker humbucker duo

Schecter’s USA Colossus and ChaosBreaker combo is rare for contemporary builds. That’s why, when they appear, Sweetwater guitarists know they’re in for a treat. The Colossus retains a shockingly crystal-clear high end without a spiky treble gain in the bridge position. The ChaosBreaker in the neck is perfect for lead tones and rhythm strumming, allotting plenty of articulation with an unobtrusive amount of low-end punch. As a team, these hearty pickups are the perfect choice for bold shred licks, polychromic pitch-bending panache, and fast-paced melodic runs. Throw in the Tao-6’s push-pull Volume control and 3-way pickup selector switch, and you’ll be coasting the audial plane from sparkling cleans to downright dirty metal crunch.

This axe is no pain in the neck

Considering the Tao-6’s satin-finished neck and ultra-thin U-shaped profile, you’ll have no problem transitioning between notes at any location on the fingerboard. With a deep treble-side cutaway, you can access high-frequency shreds, compose complex solos, and manufacture sharp melodies with the same energy and gusto as John himself. While the neck may lack a standard inlay design, the Tao-6 makes up for it with distinct Luminlay side markers, allowing you to quickly find your spot with a simple glance. Best of all, these markers feature a glow-in-the-dark color scheme, granting visibility in even the darkest performance environments.

John Browne: monumental musicality and genre-defying power

As the English heavy metal act Fellsilent began to gain altitude, lead guitarist John Browne joined forces with the mathcore axe man behind the Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, Josh Travis, to form Monuments in 2007. The deluge of djent-fueled prog metal that followed would bring the band to nearly every corner of the globe, refining and evolving their galvanizing and innovative sound. As the visionary mind behind the musical madness of Monuments, John’s playing has cemented him among the vanguard of djent players, celebrated as a pioneer of the haymaker genre.

Schecter John Browne Tao-6 Features:

  • John Browne (Flux Conduct) 6-string signature model electric guitar
  • Swamp ash body veiled with a flamed maple veneer top generates excellent resonance and high-frequency projection — perfect for prog metal experimentation
  • Bolt-on neck joint and generous cutaway shape lend easy access to all 24 frets
  • Schecter USA Colossus and ChaosBreaker humbucker duo churns out crystal-clear high frequencies with an undisturbed bottom end at any gain level
  • Dial in your sound with a push-pull volume control knob and 3-way pickup toggle
  • Satin-finished neck with ultra-thin U-shaped profile makes quick note transitions a breeze
  • Hipshot Grip-Lock tuners and fixed bridge promote easy and healthy intonation
  • Black hardware with TUSQ nut and luminlay glow-in-the-dark side markers top off killer sound with a unique visual display

Reviews

The only Schecter I’ve ever liked
As I said in the title this is the only one I've ever played and I actually liked and this thing is absolute fire. One of the easiest playing guitars I've ever felt. Not dead set on the pickups yet but the playability is ridiculously good for this price.
Better than expected
This was the first time buying a guitar online so I was a little sketched out. This Tao-6 was a demo and listed as having a crack in the neck pocket. As soon as I opened the box I started inspecting it, recorded the whole thing too. I couldn't find a crack, even with my reading glasses. Zoomed camera, nope. Wife and kids can't see a crack either and their eyes are much better than mine. There is a little ding in the wood but no crack! The guitar is not without it's flaws but that comes with production guitars and a different one could be worse. Nothing I would return it for though. I am very pleased with Sweetwater on how they seemed to over state the flaws. That is a solid strategy IMO.
This Guitar truly blew my mind.
This is my first "Big Boy" guitar and i couldn't have made a better decision. It does everything that i need it to do from deathcore to soulful melodies it hasn't failed me once. Build quality is insane for the price, the color is exceptional and the body shape fits extremely well in your hands. The guitar weighs almost nothing compared to others in its league and i truly think if you like playing anything complex or busy this guitar will deliver with mind blowing clarity no matter what you throw at it.
A truly great instrument.
I had originally pr-ordered the yet not available Reaper Elite also from Schecter. I'm admittedly not the most patient person so I inevitably looked at what else was available while I waited. Mostly find reason to not get something else. Then I noticed the John Browne signatures and found myself wondering if I should keep my pre-order or go for this new contender. Well I'm here doing a review so we all know what I did.
I had only a passing bit of knowledge about John Browne himself so I had little to no preconceived idea on what I was getting beyond him playing heavy music. It was a risk as such. Boy did that risk pay off. I haven't connected so well with a guitar in a while. It plays very well has excellent sound quality with a wide range of good tones without needed to set up special preset on an amp for different parts of a song. The chugs have impact, the power chords growl, and the single notes sing and sustain buetifully. It also does cleans nicely especially with the split coil option on.
Music background: Long time player (nearly 30 years)
