Reviews

Has the magic.

Ok so instruments are subjective. What is good to me may be unbearable to others so when reviewing a bass or guitar it's really hard to convey just "how something feels". When picked this thing up it just had the magic. You know what I'm talking about. That feeling that this is home, this is going to be my go to. This replaced a squire 70s vibe 5 string that had extensive mods and let me tell you this Yamaha is a sleeper. Out of all the 5 strings I've played this has to be the best bang for the buck. Easily beats out any thing fender or Ibanez has in the price range or close to it. Out of the box playability was fantastic. Only a little fret buzz on the b string but will be fixed with a setup. Electronics punch above its price range. Is it a 55-02 or an American Pro II? No, but it also doesn't cost an arm and a leg. But I'll throw it up against any sub $ bass and I promise you it will come out on top. Love it so much I'll be ordering a TRBX605 as well. PS. Hold out for the green. It's super s3xy

Pretty Good - But Improvements Needed
Like all Yamaha instruments, this bass is pretty well made, especially for the price. However, there are some opportunities for improvements.

1 - The neck pickup should be closer to the neck. There is not enough difference in sound, when the neck pickup is so close to the bridge pickup. And even the bridge pickup could be a tad closer to the bridge.

2 - There is no bypass switch, to switch between active and passive mode. In other words, this bass can only be played in active mode. I did manage to install a bypass switch on this bass, but there should really be one there already.

3 - I really don't like the sound of this bass. The pickups are too hot and when the signal goes through the pre-amp it gets even hotter and there is even some clipping coming straight out of the pre-am, even with a brand new battery. This is to the point that when you play through some amps, on some settings (such as dialed up treble) clipping and distortion occurs, through the clean channel. To be clear, it will play fine through most bass amps, but since I rent a space in a large studio, I played it through a variety of bass amps. It doesn't always sound clean.

To end on a positive note, this is still a pretty good instrument for the money. The frets are great. No fret sprout or uneven frets on two separate basses I've seen. The nut is a bit too high, but that is to be expected in this price range. The wood selection of the neck (two basses I've seen) was actually very good.

It is very comfortable to play.

Love this bass!
I love this bass. It plays and sounds great.
Unbelievable value

Every time I pick up this bass I can't believe it was under $. There is no other company in the industry other than Yamaha that gives you the quality per dollar for their bases. There are so many options sonically with this bass that I can play across almost any genre and the neck is a joy to play. Smooth and modern.

Woah
I became one with the bass. I am bass.. All jokes aside, this bass has a really good feel to it. Dont even get me started on the finger grooves BUILT INTO THE PICKUPS!! They feel absolutely amazing when playing. I HIGHLY recommend this bass. 10/10 would buy again
Music background: I like to play for fun!
