Experience the Beyerdynamic Difference on Kick Drum

Purpose-built for capturing the full impact of bass drums and other low-frequency-intensive instruments, the TG D70 Premium Dynamic Kick Drum Microphone features a warm, natural sound with excellent isolation and feedback resistance. To eliminate structure-borne vibration that can cause rumble, the TG D70’s capsule assembly is isolated by an integrated elastic suspension system. The TG D70’s compact dimensions and tight hypercardioid polar pattern make it easy to place to get the sound you want, as it rejects off-axis ambience that can cloud your signal. Its frequency response features a low-frequency proximity effect boost and upper-midrange rise for punchy kick drums and floor toms you won’t have to EQ to sound great. With the Beyerdynamic TG D70, you’re ready to rock — just set your level and hit record.

Reviews

Excellent Kick Mic
Subjective opinion : ) Seems to be somewhere in-between the long time usual suspects and some of the newer mics targeting Kick Drums. Highly recommend.

No EQ needed here!
Been using an MD 421 on my 22' kick just because I own one, and have not seen the need to purchase an independent kick mic. With a gift card burning a hole in my pocket, I blindly purchased the D70 based solely on sale price. I could not be more pleased. my kick is more punchy and really stands out in the mix without EQ and minimal compression. It has also allowed me to replace the SM57 on my floor tom with the 421, which has lifted my kit tone even further. Admittedly, I have not auditioned a ton of mics on kick. Of the half dozen or so that I have tracked (MD 421, NTK, TF M81, R10, WA47jr) this is by far my favorite. If you mic a kit, and are trying to make the most of a handful of quality mics in your home studio, you will not be disappointed with the D20. Shout out to my boy Joe Donner. He's been taking care of me at SW for years now.

Great Kick Mic
This is an incredibly good kick mic. It's the M88 kick sound without the worry of mechanical failure due to pressure fronts inside the drum. The only drawback is that there is no metal insert—so you must be very careful not to cross-thread the mic when attaching it to a stand.

Great mic, at current prices not necessarily great value.
I have four of these mics, all of which I use on floor toms instead of kick drums. They are absolutely fine on the kick drum, but I have my own favorites for that application that are not necessarily better, just different. These mics will perform admirably on both kick and floor tom, particularly large floor toms. As an added benefit, they are dynamic mics that don't pick up nearly as much background noise as a condenser, nor do they require phantom power. For live recording they are going to be a very good option.

Construction quality is top notch with the sole exception of the threading on the mounting arm. As others have noted, this is plastic without any form of metal reinforcement. They should have used a threaded insert, but for some reason chose not to. I would use these with a quick connect mic system to avoid stripping the threads. The outer shell is very sturdy, they are relatively compact and easy to position.

Sound quality is great. They give an expansive response on floor tom, capturing a wide variety of lower frequencies.

My only caveat is that Beyerdynamic's price increases in the USA are kind of shocking compared to other brands. Mics like the TG series, M88, and particularly their ribbon mics are now vastly more expensive. With the current cost of these mics I would look into the USA made Heil PR30 and PR31 that also work well on toms, and the PR40 or PR48 for kick. There are competing mics from other brands that are also very compelling. Beyerdynamic no longer has an advantage in terms of price/performance ratios.
