Taking TEO-5 to a Desktop Scale

For over 50 years, the instruments and machines painstakingly crafted and innovated by Tom Oberheim and his cohorts have shaped the sonic landscape of music, spanning the chart-topping to the avant-garde. TEO-5 encapsulates Oberheim’s multifaceted legacy, fulfilling a vision for a powerful, flexible synthesizer that packages time-tested tools with cutting-edge, contemporary character into a powerful, portable design. This 5-voice polyphonic synth captures the ethos of renowned Oberheim instruments like the OB-X, Four Voice, and TVS, refined and reimagined for the contemporary musician looking to pair vintage-derived analog character with envelope-pushing modern malleability. At its convenient size, synthesists at Sweetwater are enamored by the scope of TEO-5 desktop synthesizer, from hallmark Oberheim effects and flexible ADSSR envelopes to its multitudes of modulation and scorching thru-zero FM sonics. Outfitted with a polyphonic step-sequencer, multimode arpeggiator, and robust connectivity options, this dual analog-VCO powerhouse is nothing short of an electrifying Oberheim renaissance.

Namesake sound, decades in the making

This synth derives its name from the mind that birthed its multidimensional magic: Thomas Elroy Oberheim. And true to the maestro himself, TEO-5 excels at weaving between time-tested designs and groundbreaking advancements. Envelopes are painstakingly modeled after those found on the OB-8, while the rich state-variable filter draws straight from the iconic SEM, powering unrivaled sonic sculpting via all-analog VCOs and VCFs, deploying oscillators supercharged to rip through the mix with searing thru-zero FM synthesis.

Two oscillators, one limitless palette

At its foundation, two tripartite oscillators drive the distinctive sonics of TEO-5, each of which features three pure waveforms just waiting to be deployed through the synth’s 5-voice polyphony: triangle, sawtooth, and pulse waves. Dedicated sub-oscillators and noise generators expand the hues of TEO-5, honed through the SEM-inspired state-variable filter’s lowpass, highpass, notch, and bandpass options. Morphing and modulating through each filter lets you create dynamic, evolving tones, with options to individually toggle the filter’s use with each oscillator, the sub-oscillator, and the noise generator, augmenting your armature even further.

Vintage magic and contemporary control

Iconic Oberheim effects abound throughout TEO-5, dialed in for a deliverance of dual-digital dynamism that masterfully molds the synth’s armada of analog aesthetics. TEO-5 is outfitted with a dedicated reverb suite and complemented by chorus, delay, and other time-based effects, with detailed feedback-shaping and depth controls to imbue your textures with dimension. To fully tap the latent aural alchemy of TEO-5, meticulously crafted emulations of Oberheim’s lauded Phase Shifter and Ring Modulator are included to evoke blistering resonances, metallic machinations, and kaleidoscopic harmonics.

Malleable modulation and time-bending tone

Across its dual-oscillator architecture, TEO-5 supports multitudes of sound design capabilities, modulation, and timbral shaping. A dyad of multi-waveform LFOs supports dedicated monophonic and polyphonic modulation, while each ADSR envelope supports a flexible array of amp, filter, auxiliary, and gate configurations with toggled velocity parameters to elicit nuanced, expressive performances. Versatile sync, unison, and oscillator cross-modulation options are expanded by onboard PWM and an adjustable Vintage knob to seize global control over the unpredictability of aged analog.

Primed for studio and stage performance

For multilayered madness, TEO-5's 64-step polyphonic sequencer is your key to limitless ideation and melodic excavation, while the multimode arpeggiator offers a soaring 3-octave range and a trio of repeat functions. When two hands aren’t enough to harness TEO-5’s suite of expressive and modulation capabilities, its multifaceted array of connectivity supports countless live and recording configurations. A triad of 5-pin MIDI in, out, and thru ports is complemented by a MIDI-capable USB-B port, footswitch input, and pedal input, seamlessly integrating with DAWs and beyond.

Oberheim TEO-5 Features:

  • Versatile 5-voice polyphonic desktop synth packs decades of Oberheim excellence into a compact, space-saving instrument
  • Dual VCO architecture comprises supercharged analog oscillators with thru-zero FM synthesis, delivering scorching sonics with malleable harmonic depth
  • Dedicated monophonic and polyphonic multi-waveform LFOs are independently syncable with flexible destination assignments
  • State-variable morphing filter pulls from the iconic SEM to sculpt your output through lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and notch configurations with extensive musicality
  • Unison, oscillator cross-mod, sync, sub-oscillator, and noise generator allow for detailed sound design to dial in the ideal parts for your performance
  • Lauded Oberheim digital FX have been painstakingly captured for use with this out-of-time synth, including the classic Phase Shifter and Ring Modulator, on top of choruses, delays, and more
  • Dedicated reverb suite, Overdrive control, and Vintage parameters mean nuanced polyphonic textures that are painlessly refined
  • Both ADSR envelopes feature toggled velocity sensitivity and flexible amp, filter, gate, and auxiliary assignments to create multilayered polyphonic modulation
  • 3-octave multimode arpeggiator includes a trio of repeat behaviors to expand blistering harmonics with reactive rhythms
  • Comprehensive I/O includes 5-pin MIDI in, out, and thru, alongside pedal and footswitch inputs, and a MIDI-capable USB-B port, guaranteeing seamless interoperability between stage and studio use

Reviews

TEO-5 is Amazing
I Think this Synth is amazing because it sounds like the original and is so easy to use. I have the desktop module and have it connected to my ASM Hydrasynth via a midi cable. One thing I really like is that with this configuration I can change the preset on my Hydrasynth and it wont change the one on the Teo-5 which is great on the fly. Some of my other keyboards would actually change both which is annoying. I also like the ease of operation and manipulation to create your own patterns. I would Highly recommend this synth.

it’s very good
I think this and the Take 5 have makings of sleeper classics down the road - they're just super great packages for the money. I owed the Take 5 too and i just like this one's sound a bit more, plus i like the discrete light up buttons vs variable switch waveform so you can reverse engineer presets a bit more (I'm still learning). Eventually I do hope to get a Take 5 again (but in desktop form!), I'm such a fan of these.

If you can afford an OB6 or an OBX8 definitely get those but if you want a less shocking price tag and a fairly inspiring analogue synth these are great-

Although this doesn't have quite the sound design capabilities of a Rev2 and 5 voices can get limiting, the SEM filter + mod matrix really can achieve such a range of sounds the Take 5 just can't quite match- I just want to keep playing this!
TEO-5 is Amazing
This Synth is amazing and easy to use. I have the Desktop module and have it connected via a midi cable to my ASM Hydrasynth and what I like best about that is that some keyboards that are connected that way will change the preset of the one you don't want changed when you set a different one on the first keyboard. This doesn't happen with this configuration, which is great for playing on the fly. The sounds are incredibly accurate to the original and the manipulation to create your own is so easy to do. Overall I am very satisfied with it and have been using it a lot in my studio.
