A Whole New Generation of V-Drums

Roland’s V-Drums TD516 is the definition of a do-it-all electronic drum set, boasting a world-class set of pads and a brand-new V51 sound module. You get the same sound engine as Roland's flagship V71 module that covers just about every percussion application imaginable. If you’re after a more personalized sound, deep editing capabilities allow you to tune, tinker, and tweak every facet of your tone, and you can even upload custom WAV samples via SD card (sold separately). Looking for top-quality pads? The CY-18DR ride, KD-12 kick, and PD-140DS snare are time-tested classics found in previous generations of V-Drums, and three of Roland's PD-P Premium series toms have become new favorites of Sweetwater’s electronic drumming enthusiasts. The CY-12C-T, CY-14R-T, and VH-14D crash and hi-hat cymbals have been thinned down and revamped for vastly improved expressive potential. An MDS-STD3 rack wraps up the TD516 with road-ready reliability, keeping your setup solid show after show, session after session.

The Roland V-Drums TD516 includes:

  • V51 sound module
  • 14-in. PD-140DS snare
  • 2 x 10-in. PD-10P toms
  • 12-in. PD-12P tom
  • 14-in. VH-14D hi-hat
  • 12-in. CY-12C-T crash
  • 14-in. CY-14R-T crash
  • 18-in. CY-18DR ride
  • 12-in. KD-12 kick tower
  • MDS-STD3 rack
Kick pedal, hi-hat stand, and snare stand are not included.

Meet the V51 Sound Module

The most realistic drum sounds available

DW Soundworks represents a revolutionary virtual instrument designed to provide creators with authentic drum sounds. Offering a comprehensive collection of drum sounds that cater to a wide array of musical styles and genres, DW Soundworks is an invaluable resource for drummers, producers, and songwriters. With its ability to serve as a virtual studio instrument (VST) and as a drum sample library inside digital audio workstations (DAWs) for creating acoustic drum tracks, DW Soundworks is a go-to solution for musicians looking to incorporate high-quality drum sounds into their productions. The V51 module features the same sounds and expansions as Roland's top-of-the-line V71 module in a compact, streamlined design.

Keep it fresh

With the Roland Cloud Connect mobile app and the included Roland Cloud Ultimate membership, your V51 module will always stay up to date. First, the Roland Cloud Connect app works in conjunction with the V51's onboard Wi-Fi to install sounds directly from your iOS/Android mobile device. This setup enables seamless wireless connectivity, making it easy to update and expand your V51's sound library without needing a computer. Second, the Roland Cloud Ultimate membership is the highest tier of Roland's subscription service, providing access to an extensive library of Roland's iconic sounds, including synthesizers, drum machines, and other instruments. Finally, the companion V51 Editor software and enhanced V-Edit tools will help you craft your own unique sonic signature from studio to stage.

V-Drums software editor

One of Roland’s most frequently requested features for its V-Drums has been a software-based editor. Well, now it’s here! Simply jump on Roland Cloud, where you’ll find it as a free download. Your instrument changes are instantly reflected in both the module and editor software, and the module’s audio processing tools are accessible as well, allowing you to shape tones with a similar workflow to music production software. The ability to alter your V51's sounds using a larger computer screen with mouse control is indeed a very welcome addition.

Craft a custom kit

In addition to the vast collection of preset drum kits, the V51 module allows you to import your own WAV sounds via SD card (sold separately) to build your own instrument or integrate a specific sample into a preset kit. From lo-fi percussion samples to full-length audio loops, the V51’s customization possibilities are endless.

Simplify your recording setup

If you’re building up a home studio, an electronic drum kit is just about the easiest way to lay down your drum tracks — no mics, interface, or excessive noise required. The V51 module effortlessly outputs multitrack audio to your DAW via a single USB-C cable for near-silent recording of studio-quality beats. Plus, with MIDI In and Out/Thru connections, the V51 can be configured as a USB MIDI interface, allowing you to retrack or trigger parts using virtual instruments within your DAW. Lastly, the L/R Stereo outputs and L/R Direct Outs are must-have features for performing musicians who regularly hook up their set to a PA mixer.

Expand your potential

While the TD516 comes with just about everything a drummer could ever want, we more than understand the never-ending need to tinker and build upon your setup. Fortunately, Roland includes four extra auxiliary trigger inputs on the V51 sound module, plus three Digital Pad inputs to easily expand and upgrade your kit. Furthermore, the V51's coaching tools will take your accuracy, speed, and endurance to heights you never thought possible. Roland classics like Time Check and Quiet Count are onboard, as well as the brand-new Phrase Trainer, Stroke Monitor, and aptly named Blast Beat Builder. Spend some time with these features, and it won't be long before the trickiest of beats and fills become second nature.

Bluetooth MIDI and song streaming

The TD516’s built-in Bluetooth transceiver is sure to elevate your practice and recording sessions. Music can be streamed directly from your device to the module, allowing you to practice with your favorite grooves and fills. If you prefer connecting to a wired external device, then no problem! The V51 features a 1/4-inch Mix In input for that as well.

Kick pedal, hi-hat stand, and snare stand are not included.
Hi-hat stand is sold separately.

TD516 Pads and Stand

18-inch digital ride is Roland’s most convincing V-Cymbal yet

Electronic cymbals have a reputation for being utilitarian — a means to an end. But the Roland CY-18DR invites players to bring their acoustic touch back to their electronic drum kit. This 18-inch V-Cymbal sways and plays like a real cymbal. Multiple sensors across the playing surface eliminate the feeling of zones; distinct edge, bow, and bell tones melt into one another seamlessly. And the Roland CY-18DR's multi-touch technology lets you not only choke crash attacks with your hand but also soften cymbal attacks with a finger's touch. If you have trouble getting the full emotion of a performance to translate through traditional electronic cymbals, Sweetwater recommends putting the Roland CY-18DR V-Cymbal digital ride through its paces. You won't be disappointed.

Top-of-the line VH-14D hi-hat

The crown jewel of the TD516’s impressive set of pads is the VH-14D, a 14-inch pad that sets the standard for acoustic-like realism. A 2-piece design, open/closed resolution, and touch-sensitive multi-sensor system deliver unmatched expression potential, tracking every subtlety of your stick’s strike. Foot splashes sound better than ever, and you can even mute the cymbal with a quick grab, just like a real cymbal. It might not be made out of bronze, but you’d be hard-pressed to tell the VH-14D apart from the real thing.

14-inch digital snare plays like the real deal

The TD516's snare drum is as sophisticated as its sound module. Eight sensors across the 4.3-inch x 14-inch Roland PD-140DS's head and rim accurately translate your performance into the electronic realm. This means fat backbeats, cutting rimshots, delicate ghost notes, brush sweeps, and natural cross-sticks that connect every time. And because of its 14-inch diameter, the Roland PD-140DS transitions seamlessly between your acoustic kit and back. Particular about your tuning? So are we at Sweetwater. Fortunately, the PD-140DS's 8-lug design and 3-ply mesh head make it easy to dial in your desired level of tightness or sponginess.

V-Kick supports single and double pedals

The Roland TD516's KD-12 tower-style bass pad features an adaptive playing surface that responds more like an acoustic drumhead, providing realistic feedback for attack and dynamics. Its redesigned frame greatly reduces physical movement to minimize flexing and scooting. On a rug or carpet, it's rock solid, with spurs to anchor the pad in place. Roland designed the KD-12 to accept single or double pedals, so whatever style of music inspires you, this pad delivers.

What else is included?

  • PD-P Premium series toms (x3): Roland’s new PD-P Premium series tom pads (2 x 10-in. and 1 x 12-in.) sport a multi-zone design for a nuanced response that captures your strikes across both the head and rim. Additionally, Roland has equipped them with genuine die-cast hoops and a dazzling chrome finish for a truly authentic look and feel.
  • CY-12C-T and CY-14R-T crash cymbals: This generation of Roland V-Drums features thinner, more sensitive CY-12C-T and CY-14R-T crash cymbals than previous generations. In addition to their new low profile, both of these cymbals offer a choke control that functions just like a traditional cymbal — just grab the edge! Both cymbals also sport a dual-trigger design, with sensors on both the bow and edge for a wide variety of configuration options.

Roland TD516 Features:

Reviews

Roland is top of the line
I'm impressed with this kit. The sounds and the hardware are all top of the line. Quality Roland product
Top notch
The capabilities of this kit are amazing. The sensitivity and dynamics almost mirror an acoustic kit. Quality hardware and sounding kits

Wow!
I was really worried I would hate switching from acoustic drums to the td-516 but I was wrong.
I love everything about this kit! I did add 2 crashes from another brand and now use the
12 inch Roland crash as a splash. I have recorded with it and it still has never missed a trigger.
Super happy with my purchase. Thank you Sebby Woldt! You made it the transaction easy.
Exactly as Good as you'd Expect
I upgraded from a TD25kv to this and I am thrilled really. It sounds great - and if you don't like the stock sounds it controls VSTs just fine (get the drivers from roland's site first for PC/MAC use), but I think it sounds pretty good, especially some of the Roland expansions like their 50th anniversary kit - but eventually we'll have to pay for that separately *only get 6 months of it for free. The volume mixer is nice too - often one of the groups would be too loud on a preset... usually the toms or hi hat in my experience.

The digital pads are incredible - though unchanged from the prior gen TD27kv so you may already be familiar, but I never had that coming from the TD25, absolutely gamechanging. The digital pads are the main reason you choose Roland at this point, that and reliability.

The bass drum is heavy and feels premium - I was surprised by how solid it is. The module is easy enough to use - its the v71 with less buttons the software is the same which is great. The stand comes with a snare mount, which I slipped on the rack and now use for a BT1. The toms are fine - its nice they're bigger and they play well. 10 10 12 is way way better than 8 8 10.

With the larger pads, the digital triggers, the new module... it so great to play.

I want to dock half a star because this price they should've included their new snare drum with the snare throw off. They put it on the v51 VAD set... but not this one. The difference between this and VAD should purely be the acoustic looking shells - nothing else. Instead they're nickel and diming us on a already very expensive product. But I don't know, I'm still just so happy to have these. If I didn't know there was a newer snare out there I wouldn't have any gripes with the one I got. This is more on principle.

Wish the USB C plug was on the back with the other plugs - on the left side its in a spot that would be easy to bump into. and break. I got a right angle adapter since I didn't want it sticking out.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
