The Epitome of Surfliner Style

More than just a visual upgrade over the standard Surfliner, Guild’s Surfliner Deluxe fully commits to the offset guitar formula with the surfy sounds of a 2-piece vibrato unit! This unit style hails from the vintage era’s surf and offset guitars, offering an incredibly smooth, gliding vibrato action and a distinct quick-attack, moderate sustain sound. In addition, the Surfliner Deluxe truly lives up to its “Deluxe” designation, boasting a maple neck with sleek block/binding rosewood fingerboard, matched painted headstock, and redesigned control scheme. The rest is all classic Surfliner: the lightweight poplar body is home to an endlessly versatile 3-pickup HSS configuration of a bridge Guild HB-2 humbucker and two DeArmond Aerosonic single-coils to effortlessly cover everything from traditional washed-out surf tones to hard rock swagger and beyond.

Versatile HSS pickup configuration

While this guitar takes inspiration from the surf guitars of the ’60s, the Surfliner Deluxe’s modernized HSS pickup combo can cover almost any style you can throw at it! The Guild HB-2 mini humbucker bridge pickup provides a full, punchy tone that’s equally at home with twangy tremolo picking as it is with fuzzed-out garage rock lead tones. Two Aerosonic pickups in the middle and the neck position bring the single-coil clarity, ideal for players looking to capture more traditional offset-style guitar tones.

Comfortable maple neck

The Surfliner Deluxe sports a beautiful rosewood-on-maple neck that’s loaded with features to deliver a versatile and comfortable playing experience. The 10-inch fingerboard radius is curved enough to deliver both easy open-position playing and wide enough to prevent your bends from choking out when exploring the Surfliner Deluxe’s higher register. Next, the elegant block and binding fingerboard appointments are a serious visual upgrade over the standard Surfliner Deluxe. Finally, the “C” shape neck is sure to make players of all varieties feel right at home when playing the Surfliner Deluxe — it’s the standard guitar neck shape for a reason!

Surfy offset-style vibrato system

While the standard Surfliner features a traditional string-through hardtail bridge, the Surfliner Deluxe fully commits to the offset formula with a 2-piece Guild vibrato unit. Any fan of the classic offset guitars of the ‘60s will find much to love about this reliable vibrato system, sporting a depth that goes from a subtle shimmer to cascading waves of surfy vibrato. Moreover, it’s also a must-have vibrato system for the more alternative-minded musician — after all, it’s the very same unit that defined the gliding strummed chord-vibrato sway of the shoegaze era!

Guild Surfliner Deluxe Features:

  • Lightweight poplar body in an exceptionally comfortable offset-style design
  • Maple neck in a highly versatile C shape
  • Rosewood fingerboard featuring elegant binding and block inlays
  • Narrow jumbo frets in a 10-in. radius are sure to please guitarists of all styles and backgrounds
  • Versatile HSS pickup configuration that covers everything from traditional surf sounds to hard rock to blues and beyond
  • TOM bridge with Guild Vibrato system captures the gliding vibrato sounds of both the surf guitar and shoegaze era

Reviews

Guild Quality
This is a very nicely build guitar and an exceptional value. The build and finish have not had the best reviews, but I have found no issues with this one. The finish is perfect, the frets are well dressed, the tuners are excellent, the intonation was good out of the box, and the Tune-O-Matic bridge seems to play well with the vibrato. Placement of the controls is good, and the offset body is comfortable.
I no longer have a Strat to compare pickups to, but these seem a little mid-scooped to me actually making them more suited to that surf sound. I would recommend checking out a few reviews for tone comparisons. In most of the reviews I watched before buying there were notes about finish problems. As I said before, this one has none of those issues. Early versions also had an issue with the collet from the vibrato bar touching the strings. That problem has been corrected by Guild. No more squeaky wiggle stick.
If you're looking for a great player guitar at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong with the Guild Surfliner Deluxe, and you can't go wrong getting it from Sweetwater. These guys always take care of me.
Music background: Too many years of playing to not be better at it.
Another Fantastic Budget-ish Guild!
Punches well above its' weight class with its' relatively low price, and has turned out to be one of the best guitars I've ever had the pleasure of purchasing, right alongside its' cheaper non-Deluxe cousin, which is equally excellent as an aside. I highly recommend.
Music background: Guitar Luthier of 30 Years
Good
Pretty good shouldn't have got rid of the switches tho
Cheap is what Cheap is.
I purchased this as a maybe, sometimes cheap is still a good instrument. This time it wasn't. Oh well! I will probably never play it again. Eventually I will give it to someone who is a beginner.
Music background: Over 50yrs of playing guitar
