A Modern 3-pickup Solidbody from PRS

The PRS Studio takes the concept of the modern 3-pickup electric guitar to a new level of tonal mastery. Equipped with PRS’s proprietary Narrowfield pickups in the neck and middle positions and a 58/15 bridge pickup, the PRS Studio offers chimey single-coil sounds, vintage scooped tones, and the awesome power of a screaming bridge humbucker — all in one sleek solidbody guitar with a gorgeous figured maple 10-Top. A push-pull Tone control and a 5-way blade switch give you instant control over the the Studio’s formidable tone arsenal, delivering seven different combinations that will cover any genre, from classic rock to edgy fusion. And of course, being a PRS, playability is flawless. If you’re looking for one guitar that will do it all, Sweetwater recommends giving the PRS Studio a serious audition.

A sonic arsenal under your command

The PRS Studio is all about tonal dexterity, thanks to its complement of proprietary PRS pickups and versatile switching scheme. PRS’s Narrowfield, deployed in the neck and middle positions of the Studio, is a remarkable pickup that delivers the best characteristics of a humbucker, a P-90, a traditional single-coil, and a mini humbucker. Technically, the Narrowfield’s dual coils classify it as a humbucking design, while its svelte form factor is reminiscent of a mini humbucker (with which, perhaps not surprisingly, it shares certain tonal characteristics). Mini humbuckers — especially in the neck position — have long been prized for their ability to maintain clarity in overdrive conditions while bucking the hum.

Stationed at the bridge is a 58/15, which produces a rich, organic vintage tone — the warm and clear sonic elixir that propelled this pickup to the top of many guitarists’ favorite PAF-style humbucker lists. The 58/15 is incredibly versatile and cleans up nicely when you roll back your guitar’s volume control. Cranked through a good tube amp, the 58/15 can produce raging overdrive with fat, snarling tone that nevertheless maintains crystalline note separation within chords.

The Studio is equipped with a push-pull Tone control that splits the pickup coils for sparkly single-coil tones, while a 5-way pickup selector switch serves up spanky reverse-polarity tones in positions 2 and 4. The immense flexibility of the Studio’s unique pickup and switching arrangement gives you an instrument that can serve up any electric guitar sound you could ever need for a live gig or studio session.

Pattern profile neck for optimized playability

The PRS Studio is spec’d with PRS’s Pattern profile neck. A hallmark of PRS quality, neck shapes are, of course, critical to your playing experience. Perfected after years of prototyping, the Pattern neck is an updated Wide Fat PRS neck style based on neck shapes Paul Reed Smith designed in the 1970s and ’80s for Carlos Santana, Peter Frampton, and Howard Leese of Heart. Fast and comfortable, the Pattern profile always feels just right. In reality, most electric guitarists employ a combination of thumb-over and thumb-behind fretting-hand positions in their playing, and the Pattern profile lets you switch seamlessly between the two.

It's Own Thing

I've had my PRS Studio for a few years now, so I will give my honest thoughts. I don't see it as a desert island guitar, even though it can get a very wide range of tones. It is also not a Strat, even though it is capable of sounding like one in the 2 & 4 positions. It's thicker with more gain, like a Strat on steroids. The 58/15 LT bridge pickup is a beautiful sounding PAF style pickup and the narrow-field mini humbuckers are just that - really great sounding mini humbuckers that stand up well on their own. They work very well with this guitar and for me the bridge/middle position is just MAGIC. No other guitar I own can get such a beautifully well balanced tone that I like to use with delay and reverb for awesome ambient tones, adding vibrato bar shimmer.

It goes without saying that the PRS build quality is superb. The ergonomics and playability feel "just right" and the finish is absolutely stunning. I have a few other PRS guitars and it would be easy to think that they have the same body shape and the only difference is the pickups, but I can say with confidence that they all feel like very different and unique instruments. The PRS Studio is definitely it's own thing, and a good thing!
Music background: Songwriter, Producer, Performer

You don't even have to play guitar to know that PRS instruments are in a league of their own. With their exquisitely figured tops and premium appointments, each PRS is a playable work of art. But it goes way deeper than the surface. Every time Paul visits Sweetwater, we get a deeper look at his amazing instruments. We've even hosted several PRS Custom Shop events, complete with Paul's personal Wood Library! Whether they're his most affordable SE electric guitars, top-quality acoustics, or amps, it's always amazing to see what PRS comes up with. What's more, we keep a ton of PRS guitars in our amazing Guitar Showroom, so the staff at Sweetwater can get hands on with all of their latest models. We'd love to tell you all about them.
