Primed for Revolutionary Riffage

Fueling his groundbreaking work in Rage Against the Machine, Tom Morello’s hippo-adorned, politically charged custom 6-string has stood as his most iconic guitar for more than three decades. Now, the renegade style and era-defying sound of that iconic instrument can be yours with the Fender Tom Morello “Arm The Homeless” guitar. Tom originally acquired the guitar in the late 1980s, and he quickly set about modding and replacing just about every component on the guitar — a fact reflected in Fender’s re-creation with its scattershot specs, including a double-cut alder body and a painted maple neck wielding a Custom Flat C profile and an angular “hockey stick” headstock. Under the hood, you get an EMG 85 in the bridge with an EMG H in the neck to capture the exact sound of Tom’s legendary playing, whether you’re dishing out classic early-era Rage riffs, scratching a hex key across the strings, or lighting up the stage with Whammy-induced madness. Moreover, an expressive double-locking Gotoh tremolo with a Floyd Rose locking nut ensures rock-solid stability while you traverse the 15-inch rosewood fingerboard’s 22 jumbo frets. Lastly (and most importantly), this guitar’s juxtaposition of political rebellion and happy hippos set upon a serene Ice Blue Metallic canvas mirrors the same hand-drawn artwork of Tom’s original guitar.

High-power active EMG pickups

Twin active EMG pickups grant the Fender Tom Morello “Arm The Homeless” its signature sound, comprising an EMG 85 humbucker in the bridge and an EMG H single-coil in the neck slot. From the inflammatory riffs on Rage Against the Machine’s 1991 debut album to today, these high-output pickups are responsible for many of Tom’s most iconic riffs and rhythms, capable of performing with an aggressive high-output growl that retains crystal-clear clarity no matter how much gain or effects you pile on. And while many may clamor for the stuttering staccato effects of “Bulls On Parade,” Sweetwater's Rage fanatics are quick to point out that Tom’s “Arm The Homeless” guitar doesn’t feature a kill switch — Tom simply turns the volume on one of his pickups off and flips between positions on the 3-way switch.

A true 6-string icon

The “Arm The Homeless” guitar began life as a custom-order 6-string before Tom relentlessly began switching out parts to achieve the sound of his dreams. In fact, the only feature of the original guitar that remains today is the body, featuring Tom’s now well-worn hand-drawn artwork.

Somewhere along the way of this seemingly endless journey, Tom’s philosophy flipped entirely. Instead of tweaking his gear to meet his needs, Tom instead committed to the guitar in its current form, deciding that “whatever sound this thing makes…I’m going to create with it.” Ever since, Tom has retained his utilitarian approach to gear, and if you’re lucky enough to see him slinging his “Arm The Homeless” guitar on the stage today, it remains largely unchanged.

Tom Morello: revolutionizing the sound of rock for 30+ years

For more than 30 years, Tom Morello has remained one of the most fearless guitarists in modern music. His inimitable style seamlessly fuses catchy, hard-hitting riffs with experimental sounds and scratches, so much so that Tom “began to self-identify as a DJ” during his era-defining run with the genre-defying, era-defining group Rage Against the Machine. After Rage’s demise in the early 2000s, Tom once again cemented his status as a modern musical visionary in the supergroup Audioslave with his former Rage bandmates and Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell. Several Rage reunions, solo albums, side projects, and decades later, Tom’s most iconic instrument remains the “Arm The Homeless” guitar that started it all.

Fender Tom Morello's “Arm The Homeless” Features:

  • Signature guitar of Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, and Prophets of Rage’s Tom Morello, replicating the custom 6-string he’s played for 30+ years
  • Alder body featuring the same design as Tom’s iconic axe, contrasting happy hippos with Tom’s “Arm The Homeless” artwork
  • Painted maple neck in a speedy Custom Flat C profile, topped with an angular “hockey stick” headstock
  • 15-in.-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets offers smooth bends and a fast feel on your fingers
  • Active EMG electronics include a single-coil EMG H and a humbucking EMG 85, delivering a powerful, high-output tone with exceptional clarity
  • Gotoh double-locking tremolo with Floyd Rose locking nut puts squeals, screams, and all sorts of experimental, Tom Morello-style techniques at your command

Reviews

A Great Facsimile of an Iconic Guitar!
This guitar has great build quality and is made with high-quality components. I'm not sure if it was just mine, but it played like garbage out of the box. It felt stiff and played like a Mack truck, with high, cheese-grater action. Maybe it's set up to Tom's specs, but those specs aren't for me. I've had it for a few months and only just now got it playing to where I absolutely love it.

As a major guitar nerd, I noticed some differences from the original. First, the cutout for the bridge isn't correct. The original has a very specific and unique cutout for the Ibanez Edge bridge. I get it—we're not going to see an Ibanez Edge on a Fender product—but they could have approximated the cutout. It also doesn't have the brass Fathead on the back of the headstock. I know Fatheads have long since been discontinued, but for the price, they could have put a piece of brass on the back of the headstock.

All that said, I am truly happy with this guitar. The graphics are pretty spot-on. I was actually in the middle of building a replica of the guitar and have since abandoned the project, because the graphics are better than I know I could ever pull off.

Well done, Fender.

This Tom Morello Arm the Homeless signature guitar was packaged extremely well by Sweetwater. It arrived inside the original Fender box, which itself was packed securely inside a larger Sweetwater shipping box. The guitar showed up undamaged, and the condition matched the listing photos exactly.

As for the guitar itself—man, this thing is a beauty. It came already well set up and intonated, and it plays very well right out of the case. After a quick check, all I had to do was retune it. The guitar is comfortable to play despite the thicker neck profile, which feels solid and natural in the hand. Every part and electronic component works as it should, and I even appreciated that Fender used an Energizer 9V battery instead of a generic one.

The included Fender hard-shell case is excellent; I already own the same style case for several of my other guitars, and it's solid and dependable. The neck finish is spot-on, and this is a very faithful replica of the original. Details like the hippos and other artwork are part of the actual finish, not stickers or marker, which really impressed me.

I plan on installing a D-Tuna and a Tremol-No for my own playing preferences. There are a few tiny details they couldn't replicate exactly, but Fender absolutely nailed about 99% of it.

The only minor issue I noticed is that the bridge pickup sits a bit uneven under the strings. I'll likely add some foam underneath to level it out, but that's a common thing with humbuckers and not a dealbreaker at all.

I've been a Rage Against the Machine fan since the '90s, and if you're a fan too, you will not be disappointed with this guitar.
Music background: Amateur, playing since late 90's, born and raised in Compton.
Awesome!
I've been waiting for this guitar to be made professionally for the past 30 years, and they delivered big time. The neck feels great... the EMGs sound amazing... the fit & finish are top notch. It's a bit of a one-trick pony, as you can't raelly play this thing out anywhere unless you're in a Rage cover band... but, well done, Fender!
Great guitar, bad electronics
I previously wrote a 5 star review, but wanted to come back here after a couple of months playing it... as discussed in a few YouTube reviews, the toggle switch is garbage. It cuts out too often. For a guitar that stakes it's claim on being "the toggle switch guitar," that was puzzling. Fender cheaped out on the electronics, it seems... I ripped everything out, and purchased some solderless pots & a heavy duty switch from EMG - Problem solved, but it should have came like this from the factory. Also, the description says that it has locking tuners - this is not true at all. Not sure how Sweetwater missed that. All in all, it's a cool novelty guitar and really only useful if you're in a Rage cover band.

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Fender guitars, and if you’re like many of the guitarists at Sweetwater, then Fender not only made the first guitar you ever bought " they made the last one too! From building the first mass-produced solidbody electric guitars and basses in the 1950s to creating some of the most influential amplifier designs in history, it’s no wonder why Fender is one of the biggest names in the business. As one of the world’s largest Fender dealers, we have countless guitars, basses, amps, effects pedals, and accessories in stock and ready to ship, whenever you need them. We’re always getting our hands on their latest creations, and there’s nothing we love more than to tell our customers all about them!
