’70s Strat Style Meets Modern 6-string Performance

From his late ’60s tenure with the legendary Procol Harum to his equally iconic career with the Robin Trower Band, Robin Trower’s bluesy hard-rock virtuosity had made an immeasurable impact on the world of rock music. So, it speaks volumes that the Stratocaster has served as Robin’s 6-string of choice for over five decades of music making, and the Fender Custom Shop Robin Trower Stratocaster combines all of his favorite specs and tones into a single world-class electric guitar. The core of this instrument is the trio of Fender Custom Shop pickups, supplying a massive range of single-coil tones that gracefully cover the entire sonic spectrum. Next, a robust Large “C” maple neck studded with 21 medium jumbo frets in a modern 9.5-inch radius delivers effortless playability up and down the fingerboard. Finally, an exceptionally reliable hardware pairing of a 6-saddle American Vintage Synchronized Tremolo and Sperzel Trim-Lok Staggered tuners bookend the Robin Trower Stratocaster.

Chunky Large “C”-profile maple neck

While many ’70s Strat necks are known for having somewhat petite profiles, the Robin Trower Stratocaster switches up the formula with a positively chunky Large “C” shape. Sweetwater guitarists find that this robust profile perfectly fills up your hand without feeling clumsy — a consequence of the somewhat reduced 1.65-inch nut width. Top it all off with 21 medium-jumbo frets in a modern 9.5-inch radius, and the Robin Trower Stratocaster boasts playability fit for a blues rock legend.

Pickups designed by a Master Builder

To perfectly fine-tune the tone of his signature Strat, Robin worked with Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Todd Krause to develop a trio of custom single-coil pickups loaded with bluesy grit and sparkling clean tones. First up, a custom Texas Special in the bridge brings the bluesy heat, while the neck’s Custom ’54 Single-coil Strat pickup delivers round lows and chiming highs. Lastly, a reverse-wound, reverse-polarity middle-position Custom ‘60s RWRP Single-coil Strat pickup unlocks quacky, hum-canceling in-between tones in the two and four positions.

Signature ’70s Strat style

Robin’s Fender Custom Shop signature Stratocaster is equipped with a variety of ’70s-era features inspired by his favorite 6-strings. From the huge ’70s headstock to the bullet truss rod, this Strat simply screams ‘70s style. Moreover, the Robin Trower Signature Stratocaster also incorporates several features that were not present on a ’70s-era Stratocaster, such as the 4-bolt neck plate and the stability-enhancing Sperzel Trim-Lok Staggered Tuners.

Fender Custom Shop Robin Trower Stratocaster Electric Guitar Features:

  • Lightweight select alder body with a durable urethane finish
  • Maple neck in a substantial Large “C” profile, and a slightly narrow nut width of 1.65 inches
  • Maple fingerboard loaded with 21 medium-jumbo frets in a 9.5-inch radius for effortless playability
  • Custom Stratocaster single-coil pickups designed by Robin Trower and Fender Master Builder Todd Krause
  • Reverse wound/reverse polarity middle pickup for quacky hum-canceling tone in the in-between positions
  • Rock-solid Sperzel Trim-Lok Staggered tuners
  • 6-saddle American Vintage Synchronized Tremolo for classic Strat warble and vibrato

Fender Custom Shop Robin Trower Signature Stratocaster Electric Guitar - Faded Aged Lake Placid Blue
I fully expected this guitar to be amazing, but after playing it I'm still attempting to find a term of higher praise for it. Robin Trower and the Fender Custom Shop covered every base in designing the features and components to make this the most expressive instrument possible. I searched the internet and couldn't find a blue one anywhere in America, so I would have to order one and wait up to a year to get it. My only hesitation about ordering before playing one was the large C neck, as I wasn't sure my hands would fit it well, but found that Sweetwater had a black one in their store in Ft Wayne, IN. As luck would have it I was going to be traveling by car from Oregon to Florida through Wisconsin soon, so adding a stop in Ft Wayne was a no-brainer. As a bonus I got to meet up with an old friend from GIT nearby. I was already looking at buying a new amp so I contacted Sales Engineer Matt Zuleger and when I got there he set me up in a studio to try out some amps by playing the black Robin Trower Signature Strat through them. I purchased my amp, had it shipped to my Florida destination, and planned on ordering the blue strat. A couple days passed and I got a call from Matt, saying 2 blue ones had just arrived at the store. They had been ordered months before by Sweetwater and showed up early. I chose the one I wanted online and it showed up 2 days later. Once again, thanks to Matt Zuleger and Sweetwater for service above and beyond!
