Coveted ’61 Stratocaster Charm

In the heyday of early-’60s surf rock, Fender and several guitarists were on a quest to uncover the perfect Strat sound. Everything from the newly manufactured Alnico III single-coil pickup down to the nitro gloss finish was manipulated with the goal of distilling Stratocaster tone like no other. With the American Vintage II Strat, Fender has now brought back the quintessential 1961 model with unparalleled authenticity. Built with alder and maple, and rosewood tonewoods and featuring an exclusive trio of single-coil Strat pickups, the ’61 Strat is a perfect emulation of a beloved axe classic. Considering it retains the same C neck profile and familiar fretboard access, holding an American Vintage II guitar feels akin to wielding an instrument rife with legendary 20th-century tone.

Classic Strat maneuverability

The shape, feel, and build of a guitar are the first things you notice before you’re about to play. With that idea in mind, Fender took care in making sure that the American Vintage II ’61 Strat was as authentically manufactured as its predecessor. The same classic C-shape neck profile completes the ’61 Strat’s true maneuverability, allowing you to glide between notes. An accurately designed alder, maple, and rosewood construction feels like holding an authentic musical artifact, while amounting to a sturdy build. Topped off with a delicate nitro gloss finish, this Strat is the closest thing to grabbing a real-deal axe off the line in 1961.

Definitive single-coil trio

What’s the most iconic detail of a ’61 Strat? Its mid-end punch and bright treble tone, of course! Lined with three Pure Vintage ’61 single-coil Strat pickups, you’ll revel in this guitar's mid-century audial palette, including singing high notes, textured rhythms, and everything in between. The classic Stratocaster control panel includes a 5-way pickup switch and twin tone knobs, letting you maximize your output to your desired taste. Tied together with a single volume knob and easy access to a vintage synchronized tremolo, you’ll be able to conjure up any tone that crosses your creative wit.

American Vintage II authenticity

As with Fender’s first American Vintage series, the American Vintage II line of guitars strive to be as accurate as possible in terms of looks, build, tone, and appointments. When you’re buying an American Vintage II guitar, you’re not only getting a classic-looking axe, but you’re also afforded handpicked vintage-style hardware that’s designed to emulate the performance of a true 20th century instrument. When it comes to gear, Sweetwater musicians are big fans of the classics. Trust us: after playing an American Vintage II guitar, it’s not easy to put it down.

'61 Strat Vintage II AVRI

Imagine owning a 1961 Stratocaster made with some of the same machinery used in 1961...but with the benefits of todays technology.

That's what you get here!

I've wanted a '61 since the day I first picked up a guitar.....then I discovered Rory Gallagher and felll in love with his blues rock played mostly on his 1961 Strat, formerly a sunburst, but long removed by his acidic sweat. I knew some day....I would have to own one.

For years out of my reach. Original 1961 Strat's go for north of $ Even when the CS '61's came out......\

Then the Vintage II series. Perfect in every way.

I went with the Olympic White. I even went with an open box. If you're hesitant to pull the trigger on an open box, I can say the defects you'll see are hardly anything you won't do on your own durning the first week of playing.

Secondly, I got mine Plek'ed. Worth.Every.Penny

I own 7 Strats and this one ranks #2 only behind my Customized heavily modded 70's AVRI Strat designed to be close to the mod's Ritchie Blackmore has on his '74. Who knows.... the Vintage II Series 1961 Strat may even become my #1 someday.

Do it! Buy one....you owe it to yourself.

Close as you can get.
I played an actual 1961 Stratocaster for 20 years. Since I sold it, I've been looking for one that plays and sounds like that Beauty. This one turns heads just the way my first one did. It feels right, and sounds great! And the attention to detail gets the look right. Mine is on the left and next to it is a real 61.
Music background: I've been a drummer since 1966 and a guitarist since 1970. First reel professional gig was with a soul band. We played a branch of the chitlin circuit in North Florida. Some 25 years ago I recorded with a band called the Vulgar Boatman. We were signed by
The best Strat without going Custom Shop
So my first guitar was a super cheap Strat knockoff. Naturally I have always had a love/hate relationship with S Types. Fast forward 18 years and I had never owned a real Fender Stratocaster. I had always wanted a real Stratocaster like all my hero's have played.. So I did a stupid amount of research into the world of Stratocasters. Played several other brands of Strat style guitars from all different companies and finally got to try one of these in a local guitar store and fell in love with it! This guitar checks all the boxes of what I would want from a Stratocaster. The 61 pickups are amazing and this guitar sounds amazing with and without distortion on any pickup combo. However I wanted the guitar in Olympic white and they would have to order the guitar. After a few months of the guitar on backorder I had looked into buying the guitar else where as everyone else seemed to not have any problems getting this guitar in stock. I reached out to Sweetwater and talked to Stephen Gray who made the entire process so quick and simple to do! He emailed me all kinds of details on the guitar and was very knowledgeable about any questions I had about financing or any of the above. The service from Sweetwater was amazing and you all have gained a customer for life! Thank you for helping me get my dream guitar and making the entire experience fantastic!

Superb Guitar!
I've had this guitar for a little over a week now and can't put it down! It plays like a dream and stays in tune (yes, a Strat!). I did have the good folks at Sweetwater do a setup on it before I got it and they did a magnificent job. The guitar is gorgeous and feels silky smooth. It has all those classic Stratocaster tones. Brent and all the folks at Sweetwater were a joy to work with as well.

61 AVRI2
I received my'61AVRI Fender Stratocaster,2weeks ago, I have a '62 FSR,strat.made in 83-1984 A FSR of 250.Now the '61 AVRI has clay dots,63 vintage pups.& Pat pending bridge,pre-CBS,thing,first time Fender did this, with period correct parts. The playability is great with the narrow tall fret wire, which they didn't have back in 1961 so this is an upgrade.7.25neck RADIUS is my favorite. As a guitar player of 55 plus yrs. I really like the job Fender did on these. As a player of 55+ yrs.
Music background: Semi retired,Musician.
