Classic Muff Fuzz with Mid-EQ Flexibility

There's a reason Electro-Harmonix continues to expand its Big Muff line — these fuzz pedals deliver some of the most iconic guitar and bass tones ever created. And with the Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff Pi, you get the classic sound of the Big Muff combined with the comprehensive tone-shaping controls found on the Deluxe Big Muff Pi. In addition to the familiar Sustain, Tone, and Volume controls, you have a parametric midrange EQ section with up to 10dB of boost/cut, and a Wicker switch for tailoring your high frequencies. Top it off with a wet/dry Blend control and a noise gate to tame excessive noise, and you've got a does-it-all Muff with the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Big Muff Pi.

Tone-shaping tools for added flexibility

On top of the tried-and-true Big Muff tone, the Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff Pi offers impressive tone-shaping capabilities. Most notably is the footswitchable Mids section, complete with a variable center frequency and boost/cut knobs. This allows you to focus the mids, kicking them in anytime you need a little more "oomph" to cut through the mix. With the traditional Big Muff, chords could get a little mushy (which was part of the charm!), especially at high gain settings. The addition of a Wicker switch compensates for this, tailoring your high-frequency response for a clearer attack. The noise gate keeps hum and buzz at bay while keeping your tone intact.

Expression pedal input for real-time mid sweeps

All the tone-shaping power built into this incarnation of the Big Muff is awesome, but what really makes the Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff Pi a step above a traditional Muff is the expression pedal input. It gives you control over the mids, effectively turning the Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff Pi into the meanest wah you've ever heard. Big Muffs have always been popular among musicians at Sweetwater, and the expression pedal input takes one of our favorite fuzzes to a whole new level.

Electro-Harmonix Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff Pi Fuzz Pedal Features:

  • Combines the tone of the Civil War and Tall Font Green Russian Muffs with the Deluxe Big Muff Pi
  • Noise gate keeps unwanted hum and buzz under control
  • Footswitchable Mids boost/cut lets you shape your sound to cut through the mix
  • Wicker switch opens high-frequency response for a more articulate attack
  • Blend control balances fuzz signal with your dry signal
  • Expression pedal input controls the Mids for a cool fuzz wah effect
  • True-bypass switching

Reviews

Perhaps the perfect BMP
The regular Deluxe Big Muff is based around the nano NYC Big Muff circuit, while the Sovtek Deluxe is based around the Green Russian. It's a little smoother with more low end and midrange than the NYC. With only a few minutes of fooling with settings, I'm was really pleased.

I expected more of an extreme boost in high end from the wicker switch. It's noticeable, just not what I expected. It also seems to raise the noise floor of the pedal a bit.

The gate knob can give you some real staccato sounds on higher settings. Keeping it around 8 or 9 o'clock seems like the sweet spot for keeping my single coils quiet while still letting notes ring out naturally.

Blend knob mixes in clean signal, which is pretty nice if you're using this with your bass.

The mids section is what sets this apart. With the low Q setting it selects a bigger section of midrange to boost or cut, which sounds better to me than high Q which has a narrower frequency to boost. You can play rhythm with the regular scooped mids then hit the boost to stand out for solo spots. Low Q with both mids knobs around 1-2 gives a real raunchy sound that's not like any big muff.

I love it. My only complaint being that I wish the input/output jacks were top mounted instead of on the side so it took less room on my pedalboard. It's not a deal breaker, just preference.

The Perfect Big Muff
I don't write a lot of reviews, but I had to give kudos to EHX because they got this pedal right! The basic sweet Muff sounds are there, but every single added feature is incredibly useful and really pushes this pedal into "can do it all" territory. Dry Blend and Mid Boost are features that have ensured I will never go back to a basic Muff pedal again. The Wicker circuit adds a lot of brightness (but also some hiss), useful for the neck position humbucker on my Les Paul. I use a touch of Gate to decrease the noise when the Wicker is on.

I've tried a lot of Big Muff clones from boutique companies and some are very good. But this one has quickly become my favorite, and I wish I had started my fuzz quest here a few years ago because it would have saved me some time and money to just buy this EHX first.
It’s everything there just to explore
I can tell you guys it's everything there just turn the knobs and release the power. From box straight to the Pedalboard!!!

One and done
I've owned a few fuzz pedals over the years that were kind of fun but this fuzz is the one for me. The tweak-ability is what makes the difference. The blend knob and gate, albeit simple in concept, put it over the top. I can get hellish death/doom tones that still sound punchy and tight when palm muted. I just run it through my normal high gain tone on my amp (maybe dial the gain back a smidge), tweak the pedal's tone to taste with the blend knob at ~60% and the gate just high enough to clamp when I'm not playing and that's the sweet spot. Most classic fuzz tones you could want are in there as well and even some HM2ish tones, with some messing around with the mid knobs. This is just a beautiful box of filth that will stay on my pedal board for a long time.

another "buy it"
i was planning on buying the rams head reissue. i have the BMP w/tone wicker and wanted one with just the standard "volume-tone-sustain". for some reason, went with this instead. definitely no regrets. i can go on and on about this pedal, but i won't. for your sake.
