Shoegaze in a Box

Classic '90s shoegaze got its name from guitarists who seemed to fixate on their shoes, but in reality were fixated on complex pedalboards that typified the genre's thick, washy walls of sound. The Catalinbread Soft Focus Shoegaze Reverb channels this legacy, but cuts down on the required footwork with reverb, chorus, modulation, and enticing octave-up reverb all represented in one compact device. The Soft Focus is based on the extensive analysis of a quintessential rackmount multi-effect patch that shows up on numerous shoegaze classics, including Slowdive’s Souvlaki. In true Catalinbread fashion, the developers went the extra mile to improve the patch's design with a mix knob, a lower noise floor, and an improved signal quality with the effect bypassed. Want shoegaze at the touch of a button? This pedal from Sweetwater has you covered!

Reverb, modulation, and more

At its core, the Soft Focus is a heavily-modified plate reverb. The symphony, modulation, and verb knobs offer multiple ways to enhance and alter this reverb with various flavors of washy sonic depth. You can control the verb time, adjust the rate and modulation of the chorusing effect, and sprinkle octave-up sounds to saturate the reverb’s wash. Results are dreamy, thick, and potentially downright massive when paired with your favorite dirt pedal. And while the Soft Focus was made with shoegaze in mind, the addition of a mix knob gives some new vital control that the source patch lacks. The Soft Focus can give your tone slight flavor without drifting into shoegaze territory, or you can fully dive into otherworldly sounds!

Just add delay!

The Soft Focus is practically made for delay! During research and testing, Catalinbread found that the original patch included a generic '90s digital delay that wasn’t necessarily robust or versatile enough for this new iteration. With this pedal, Catalinbread leaves it up to you to add your favorite delay, or experiment with multiple, so you can summon ideal tones worthy of the 21st century.

Catalinbead Soft Focus Pedal Features:

  • Based on a famous patch used by quintessential '90s shoegaze bands, including Slowdive
  • Essentially a heavily modified plate reverb with tweakable modulation and more
  • Expands on the original patch’s functionality while addressing some flaws by adding a mix control and improving the bypassed signal quality
  • 3 sections: chorus modulation, octave-up for reverb shimmer, and straightforward reverb
  • Mix control lets you retain dry signal for better control over articulation

Reviews

Key ingredient for sweet singing glorious goodness
I am a huge fan of this pedal. Taking its cues from the famous, widely-used Yamaha FX500 (specifically patch 40), it can go from a standard (but very good sounding) typical reverb, to a shimmery symphonic masterpiece. I particularly enjoy placing it early in my signal chain, sometimes even before fuzz, then running it thru a SECOND REVERB and a DELAY pedal further down the line. Our keyboard player bowed out before the end of our church service, so I went on stage, cranked up the mix on the Soft Focus, the Strymon Big Sky, and the Keeley Halo. Wa la! Rich and full ambience and sweet singing glorious goodness.
Another application that I personally like to use it for is this: Overdrive/Distortion like a Boss DS-1 -> Soft Focus [Symph 50%, Mod 30%, Verb 20%, Mix 40%] -> (subtle) Dual Delay. Sounds like 1990 Bloodgood.
Music background: Studio musician, music teacher, worship leader, rock, jazz, country, and blues bands
I don’t even listen to shoegaze
This thing packs a punch, super lush and radiant.

This thing is surprisingly not a one trick pony
The reverb at its core is amazing.

This pedal can serve as a solid reverb. Add on the bells and whistles and you got this beautiful lush tone machine,

This pedal also responds well to my drive pedals. The textures and tones from the two paired create a unique gain cocktail that differs from standard reverb and drive. Super solid
Incredible sounds
I own other Catalinbread pedals and this one is incredible. I once owned the Yamaha multi-effects unit that this pedal is based on back in the nineties. The sound from the Soft Focus nails that patch. The Soft Focus reverb is great sounding by itself.
Man what a sound!
Does the FX40 preset off the Yamaha FX500 rack mount effects unit from the 80s/90s which gives you that thick modulated delay/reverb shoegaze sound most recognized from Slowdive's earlier albums like Souvlaki and Just for a Day. Catalinbread makes great pedals and this one is like having 3 delay reverb & modulation pedals stacked together with blend and level controls added.
Like the big long review said below, subtle and insanely useful
I totally agree with the review below that this does what those "out there" reverbs claim to do, but in a much more live friendly "set and forget" package. I usually keep it at the end of my chain with the symph/mod knobs on full, and everything else at noon. With an OD / boost in front of it, you can use the internal gain control above noon for the the most insanely cool sounding "runaway feedback knob" swells that are all controlled by your picking hand. A little bit of germanium low gain in front of this really gets it singing / oscillating, or just whack it with a DS-1 style circuit in front for giant 90s space rock (Hum, Failure, etc) tones with a small pedalboard footprint. Or stick it before a Big Muff & crank the mix knob for melted tape shoegaze tones. A great "always on" end of the chain pedal, if you love dynamics, this thing has a magical way of smoothing out distorted / clean transitions. My only minor gripe is i wish the color of the overtones / modulation weren't quite as dependent on cranking the reverb knob, since I do love to use my Swart's onboard reverb, but again, even with a touch of amp reverb, you can find a way to make this thing play nice.
