Reviews

I Think This One Will Be A Game Changer
As a live sound engineer over the past 12 years, I've come across a pretty wide variety of vocal mics. As a musician, I've also had the chance to use most of these microphones myself while singing and performing.

I knew of Earthworks mostly from their stellar reputation as a maker of high quality, extremely accurate microphones. Now, they're certainly not the cheapest microphones out there, so I was coming across many at local bars/coffee shops/venues, and hadn't made the plunge to buy one myself (though 48 months no interest almost got me a couple of times!

When I received an e-mail about the new SR117, watched a quick video, and saw the price tag of $, I didn't hesitate for a second. I got the mic the next day, used it on a live stream that night, and used it at two other solo acoustic gigs this week.

This mic is by far the easiest mic I've ever worked with. Most mics require a little work to get right. A low mid cut, a little bit of a high shelf, etc. Not to mention having to be mindful of mic technique, as most mics respond quite differently based on how hard you're singing, how close you are to the mic, etc.

For this mic, I just started with a modest HPF (Low Cut) at 80Hz). When I put in my in-ear monitors and gained it up, it instantly sounded great. No matter how I moved around or how I sang, it just sounded like.....me.

Maybe I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but I'm currently obsessed with this mic. I think it will work great in any environment: full band, solo acoustic, podcast, live stream. This thing is extremely natural and smooth. I multitrack the audio of my shows, and I've been so happy with the vocal sound each time.

Best purchase decision I've made in a while!

(Bonus Points: This thing comes with a really nice bag, and an extremely sturdy K&M mic clip. I also love the look. No text, no logo, nothing. This mic means business, haha.)
Music background: Full-Time Live Sound Engineer, Singer/Guitarist, Worship Leader.
A Fantastic, Affordable Microphone
I don't have the best voice for singing, but this mic makes things so clear, it's hard not to try to sing better. As a drummer, having a good, durable mic is crucial and the Earthworks SR117 checks all the boxes, including this mic being a condenser mic. Its supercardioid pattern does an excellent job of isolating my voice from the drums, the overall sound this mic produces is truly amazing, and all at an affordable price? What's not to like?
Extremely impressive for the price

I have had one of these for a bit over a year now so I figure I should write a review. Continuously impressed by this thing... I use it almost daily in both studio and live environments.

BUILD QUALITY: It's VERY sturdy, has a nice heft, it's sleek and unassuming, blends in well on a stage visually. I had a singer dive into the stage with it grill-first and it didn't break or bend anything. Comes apart easily to clean, XLR connector is very sturdy, though I recommend using a sturdy cable in tandem, cheaper wire will pop when 48V gets interrupted.

SOUND QUALITY: It is extremely neutral, has no natural hype at all. This could be a pro or a con depending on your style or workflow, I personally like it. It handles proximity effect EXCEPTIONALLY well, better than almost any vocal mic I have used. You will likely need to boost the high end to get a more present vocal from this unless you are a bright singer, then it might balance out. I have literally used this back to back in my studio a lot for scratch or demo vocals, and with the right singer, and after some EQ, it pretty much holds up with my $ sE RNT Tube mic... and I have had songs leave the studio with the demo vocals on the master using this mic on several occasions. Virtually no handling noise as well. I have literally never had this mic to feedback without pointing it directly into the wedge with a notable amount of gain behind it. On most preamps, I find it sits around +15dB of gain comfortably.

DOWNSIDES: The only downside I have found with this mic, is if a singer is directly in front of a drum set, it will more aggressively grab high end from the kit than other stage vocal mics like a 58 or Senn 945.

BONUS USES: Holy moly this thing sounds FANTASTIC on snare drum. It is hands down my favorite snare mic. I think earthworks also noticed how well it shines on drums, seeing as they released the DM17 which is the same mic in a drum clip form factor.

10/10 Mic, love it. Gonna buy more soon.

Excellent mic
I think this has become my new favorite mic. Have used them on about 5 shows now, even the vocalists commented on the quality of the sound. Definitely a mic worth adding to your collection.

I was particularly impressed with how it handled proximity effect and and accuracy of the sound.
Music background: Pro Audio- For more years than I want to admit too
A Great Match
We bought this for a female voice hoping we would have a 'real" capture on her singing. Did we ever! Clear, articulate, untainted and physically comfortable. With modest mixer adjustments her voice soared. A perfect match for her!
