Gibson's SG Standard: Play the Legend

Immortalized by Santana at Woodstock and smashed onstage by Townshend, the Gibson SG is a rock icon. Gibson's Nashville-made SG Standard is the real deal, arming you with a pair of toneful humbuckers, a rounded-profile neck, and a silky Plek'd rosewood fretboard with action that's almost nonexistent. The SG's lightweight mahogany body delivers great sustain and no pain, even if you play all night. And the nitro finish looks and feels luscious while enhancing the tone of this legendary solidbody electric guitar. Own your piece of rock history: the Gibson SG Standard.

Lean, mean rock machine

The Gibson SG Standard, famous for its comfortable, fast-action neck, is a perennial favorite among guitarists at Sweetwater. Whether you're chording down low or soloing up high, the distinctive rounded neck carve always feels just right. The guitar's iconic double-horned cutaway gives you free access to the high registers, while its Plek'd fretboard ensures effortless playability. The Gibson SG Standard is a lean, mean rock machine.

Matched humbucker set delivers real-deal PAF tone

Gibson voiced the pickups on the SG Standard for tonal characteristics similar to classic late-period PAF humbuckers, but with a slight increase in the upper mids for a more contemporary sound. The 490 matched pickup set really shines when pumping out the classic fat, snarling tone that is the SG's stock-in-trade. These pups are delightfully responsive, though — simply roll back the volume, and they clean up beautifully. We love this pickup combo, and so will you. Whether you're delivering your musical message with mellow jazz tones, bone-rattling crunch, or a blistering liquid inferno, the SG Standard rewards your touch with world-class responsiveness. The pole pieces of the 490R and 490T (Rhythm and Treble) pickups are aligned to match the string spacing at the neck and bridge, respectively.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

The SG Standard wears a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today's polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to "breathe." Nitro finishes not only look vintage-y wonderful, but they also enhance the instrument's tonal qualities. This guitar has the look (and feel) of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Gibson SG

Let's face it the guitar world isn't exactly lefty friendly. But there are some good lefty guitars and the Gibson SG is definitely one of them. My thanks to Connor at Sweetwater he's always available to give me great advice and get me the best deal possible. I started playing guitar a little later in life and having him as my sales engineer has been extremely valuable in all areas of guitar.

Great Guitar!

I'm a guy who has played a strat almost everyday for the last 5 years. I bought an SG because I need a guitar with humbuckers. I can say that the SG is a great guitar. Out of the box mine played very well. The scale length feels nice on my hands. I would say that the bridge pickup has a lot more treble than I expected. The neck pick up on mine is GLORIOUS very full and rounded. If I'm playing clean and I switch to the bridge pu, there's a pretty stark contrast in low end. Making the bridge pickup almost feel underwhelming. HOWEVER, of course with some dirt it sounds fantastic. Even clean, both pickups are very articulate. Might end up changing the bridge pickup but who knows. Mine plays great and is really lightweight

Update

We replaced the nut. It might have been from a right handed guitar and was flipped around for this lefty. That might also explain having a righty truss rod cover. Anyhow the guitar plays great now. Too bad it cost me an additional setup. Gibson still never responded to my support request and you would think a $2000 guitar wouldn't have such build issues.

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
