Harness the Genesis of the Metal Riff

Ever wonder where heavy metal came from? We'll give you a hint: Tony Iommi. And now, thanks to the Epiphone Tony Iommi SG Special, you can own a piece of metal history. Dubbed "Monkey," this proto-metal machine is a spot-on re-creation of the actual axe Father Iommi used to create metal's first guitar riffs. This solidbody electric guitar is built around a resonant mahogany body, with an Indian laurel-capped mahogany neck that's ultra-easy on your fingertips (or lack thereof). The Iommi SG Special comes loaded with chrome-covered Epi Pro P-90 pickups, teeming with enough high-output single-coil bite to drive you insane. You also get high-quality CTS pots and Orange Drop capacitors. The Epi Tony Iommi SG Special sports an adjustable wraparound bridge, black witch hat knobs, and Grover Rotomatic tuners. It also comes complete with a static cling reproduction of Tony's "Monkey" sticker and a hardshell case.

The original heavy metal riff machine

The Iommi SG Special is a painstaking re-creation of Tony's cherished mid-1960s SG Special, a.k.a. "Monkey." This solidbody electric guitar is the axe that started it all — the genesis of the metal riff. This SG Special became Iommi's primary instrument during the recording of Black Sabbath's eponymous 1970 debut, after his spray-painted white axe bit the electric funeral pyre, and it was deployed on all of Black Sabbath's classic '70s-era recordings. The Epiphone Tony Iommi SG Special is a spot-on reproduction of the original "Monkey," sporting chrome-covered P-90 single-coil pickups, an adjustable wraparound tailpiece, and a head-turning vintage cherry finish.

Epiphone P-90 Pro pickups

We have many fiercely loyal P-90 fans here at Sweetwater. These guitarists know that P-90 pickups offer a unique tonal palette that is distinct from — and complements — humbuckers and traditional single-coils. Epiphone's P-90 Pro soapbars are heavily inspired by Seth Lover's original designs. These pickups are super-versatile and supply their own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker, and almost as hot. So, plug the Epiphone Tony Iommi SG Special into a treble booster, crank your amp, play a few ominous tritones, and brace yourself: thunderclouds will roll, seas will shiver, and winds will moan. With the Iommi SG Special, you'll finally achieve the classic Sabbath tone you've been aiming for.

Comfortable rounded neck carve

Comfort and playability were among Epiphone's primary concerns when they designed the Tony Iommi SG Special. You’ll be delighted by how this guitar's rounded neck profile comfortably fills your hand in just the right way. What's more, this beefy neck offers more resonance and sustain than a rocket engine burning fuel into the night sky.

Epiphone Tony Iommi SG Special Electric Guitar Features:

  • Spot-on reproduction of Tony Iommi's "Monkey" SG Special
  • Mahogany body yields resonance by the truckload
  • Rounded mahogany neck with 22-fret Indian laurel fingerboard
  • Chrome-covered Epi Pro P-90 single-coil pickups serve up sinister proto-metal riffage

Rocking Riff machine

I am thrilled with my purchase!! i had been looking into a guitar with P-90 pickups for a while and was really not sure if it was something i wanted, or needed. My awesome sales engineer, Will Newbill, gave me multiple options to choose from, all within my price range and helped me weigh the options. it didnt hurt that this is a signature model from one of my favorite guitarists either! Once i started playing it, and learning the sounds of the P-90 vs my guitars with humbuckers, this wasnt the guitar, i wanted, it was what i NEEDED! This guitar absolutely rocks and love the way it feels and plays. Sweetwater, by way of Will, delivered for me again. and its worth noting that i have received many complements on its look and its sound.

Wonderful!

OK, so I'm not the biggest Black Sabbath fan in the world, but I've always admired Mr. Iommi's style and tone. And, yes that tone is available here - I ran this though a Wampler Triple Wreck and a tc Hall of Fame 2 and got pretty close. Anyway - first-rate job by Epiphone here, as is always the case. Beautiful, beautifully built, really a classic P-90 SG with a bit more style and attitude. Perfectly set-up right out of the box. Perfect - yes, that's a pretty apt description here. Very, very happy. Very.

Perfect after setup

When I received this guitar it seemed to have a short in the electronics that caused the neck pickup to muddle up and be very bass heavy regardless of how I set the tone pot. I took it in for a setup and they got the electronics sorted and now it is playing exceptionally well. I love the feel of the thicker neck profile. It feels great in my hand and is comfortable enough to allow all day playing. The P90s deliver the heavy tone and warmth I have always loved in the old Black Sabbath songs. When run through a clean channel the pickups continue to shine with their fantastic tone. The mahogany will give sustain for days. The adjustable bridge is brilliant and feels great when palm muting the strings. I absolutely love this guitar and after having the pro setup done, I wouldn't change anything.
