Monitor Accurately

Does the lead vocal sit right in your mix? Is there too much bass? Not enough? If your studio monitors are not telling you the truth, you've got problems. If you want to make great-sounding recordings that "translate" to the world outside your studio, accurate monitors are a must. Sweetwater's advice: you can't go wrong with the studio monitors trusted by George Massenburg, Chuck Ainlay, Nathaniel Kunkel, and many other world-renowned engineers: ATC. The ATC SCM45A Pro is an active 3-way with a 1" dual-suspension Super Tweeter, a 3" soft-dome midrange driver, and two 6.5" short-coil carbon-paper cone bass drivers. The system is amplified by a custom, discrete MOSFET Class A/B tri-amp pack. ATC monitors are handmade in the U.K. using cutting-edge components and processes, and you'll immediately hear why they're considered among the finest reference monitors in the world.

ATC SCM45A Pro Active 3-way Studio Monitor (pair) at a Glance:
  • A powerful three-way design
  • Proprietary drivers offer life-like playback
  • ATC's history of world-class audio
  • Ready for professional use
Powerful three-way design

The ATC SCM45A Pro has separate LF, MF, and HF drivers to cover a wide frequency range, with electronic crossovers that virtually eliminate phase incoherence. The SCM45A Pro's discrete MOSFET Class A/B tri-amp pack delivers a robust 150 watts for low frequencies, 60 watts for mids, and 25 watts for highs, while dual 6.5" woofers serve up powerful bass you can feel. You'll enjoy incredibly wide dynamic range, very fast transient response, and an exceptionally sharp stereo image - everything you need to make final mastering decisions with confidence.

Proprietary drivers offer life-like playback

Great-sounding monitors start with great-sounding drivers. The SCM45A Pro's drivers are manufactured to exacting standards at ATC's in-house facility. Hand-wound voice coils are made from flat oxygen-free copper wire and operate in a precision long magnetic gap. Specially designed magnet vents not only reduce air flow noise and heat, but increase power handling and reliability. These drivers are designed to give you a smooth and even frequency response without built-in EQ. In short, the SCM45A Pro was designed to perform to exacting professional standards.

ATC's history of world-class audio

ATC has focused on one thing - creating the best speakers possible - since 1974. In the SCM45A Pro, you'll find that every component was designed for maximum accuracy and sonic clarity. For example, ATC's electronic crossover has built-in phase correction, solving a problem that cause smeared audio or a lack of definition. And ATC's famous Super Linear Drivers reduce harmonic distortion by 10-15dB compared to similar speakers, which means you'll hear every nuance of your audio exactly as it was recorded and mixed. These are just a couple of reasons you'll find ATC monitors in the studios of the most discerning engineers on the planet.

Ready for professional use

The size and design of the ATC SCM45A Pro active monitors make them ideal as midfield monitors in most medium-sized control rooms. While the SCM45A Pro will sound "great" in almost any room, you'll want to make sure you're placing them in the correct configuration for maximum accuracy in your specific acoustic space. Call your Sweetwater Sales Engineer to learn more about control room design, acoustic treatment, and monitor management, to make sure that you'll be getting the most out of your ATC SCM45A Pro active monitors.

Reviews

ATC SCM45
So I finally ordered the ATC45 monitors that took a while to come in. Yuval Fuchs, my Sweetwater Engineer said that they were in a class by themselves but it was hard to justify as there was no place in Houston, TX to go hear them. I own a pair of Barefoot MM27 Gen2, Focal Trio 11's, Barefoot Footprint01's, Adam A77X, and Yamaha NS10's. I read every review I could find on the ATC's before purchasing them just to make sure this higher investment was warranted. When I powered them up and heard them for the first time there was an AHA moment as the definition and transparency I was hearing was very different than I was used too. I A/B/C switched back and forth between the Barefoots, Focals, and the ATC's to listen to the differences, especially since the ATC's were brand new and I wanted to make sure my ears were not deceiving me.

I remixed down a couple of songs I had previously mixed on these other monitors and what I heard back was much better mixes on these songs than I had ever heard before. Keep in mind that this was just after a few hours of using them! I've only had them a few weeks now but feel that I can definitely hear the music mix better that I ever could before using them. I always thought that my hearing was not as good as other mix professionals, as I was never satisfied with my mixes and I was having to mix over and over again to try to get it just right. I also tried using headphones to augment what I was hearing to provide 2 platforms to achieve a better mix and nothing seemed to work quite right, especially on bass.

I believe I will be selling some of my monitors now that I know what I was missing. ATC's manufacturing operation is not as impressive as other facilities I have seen tour videos on, but they sure did get it right on there sound design. You will not be disappointed with these monitors, and I now understand why a ton of professional studios stand behind them. Thank you Sweetwater for your guidance, it is much appreciated!

These are wild!
These speakers are something else.

If you have been researching these, you have probably already heard about the amazing midrange clarity and precision. You have already heard about the crystal clear and precise low end. You may have heard about the lack of sub-frequencies (relative to other similar sized/priced monitors). You may have hear that they are used by some of the best engineers from around the world. You may have heard they are both beautiful to listen to and extremely articulate.

You may have not heard that these are special because of the amount of sonic information they produce. They are not hyped or crazy. They literally just sound like more is coming out of them. Not necessarily flat, but every frequency is present and accounted for. There is not hiding in these. You also may not have heard that they are F*CKIN LOUD. I love it.

I could go on and on about "how much they changed my mixes and my sound..." blah blah blah. The point is that these are highly adored and used for a reason by both the pro-audio community and the hi-fi community (a very rare combo). They do not lie and they do not hype. They are true and fun. They are loud and exciting. They are a pleasure to work on. Oh and they give me more information to make better mix decisions with.

Totally worth the purchase and changed my music in a way I didn't think was possible. Monitoring matters. And these proved it.

Accurate and brutally honest
Some of the most accurate and brutally honest speakers I've ever used for mixing and mastering. No hype, no coloration—just pure detail. But they need the Subwoofer, they lack the low end for sure. Watch my video for more details.
10.0 Studio Monitoring Accuracy

A few years ago I went on a quest to find the ultimate studio monitor and mixing solution. I was willing to pay whatever it took. I would have spent $ designing a perfect room. I auditioned the best. What did I end up buying? A Corvette with the Bose Counterpoint sound system and a BMW X5M with the Bang and Olufsen sound system. Stellar sound quality in both yet each is a little different. Between the two I nail it. I get my mixes close in my home studio and really for me the car has always been the final test. I feel like I'm inside the mix in my cars and I can hear everything. Gotta sound good in a car. So I just went all in for the cars and my mixes sound great on everything. Yeah, I spend some cash on the Vette and the BMW, but they're both a blast to drive and it is absolutely heaven cruising down the highway listening to your mixes. It's all about the music and these two cars deliver for my clients who have paid me a fortune to make them sound wonderful which I can do because I have the right tools. So you can spend $ on a pair of speakers, but if your room isn't designed as good as the speaker you won't get out of this speaker what they are designed to do and that is tell the truth. These are stellar speakers and can be a great choice if that's the route you wanna take and maybe for some of you that makes sense. Just letting you know what I did in lieu of spending a lot of money on gear. If I need to buy another pair of speakers for my home studio to get things close, these are at the top of my list. Hope this has been helpful.
