ATC Nearfield Accuracy

The ATC SCM12 Pro is a compact, high-performance 2-way passive studio monitor that employs the company's proprietary Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) bass/midrange driver. CLD woofers use a multi-layered composite cone with a central damping layer that greatly reduces the audible artifacts of cone breakup. These drive units deliver outstanding clarity, even at high output levels. To ensure consistent performance over extended periods, the SH25-76 tweeter used in the SCM12 Pro is a unique dual-suspension unit that ensures free pistonic voice coil movement without reliance on ferrofluid. The ATC SCM12 Pro is ideal for critical nearfield monitoring applications in all control rooms and for surround applications in small-to-medium sized rooms.

Proprietary drivers offer lifelike playback

Great-sounding monitors start with great-sounding drivers. The SCM12 Pro's drivers are manufactured to exacting standards at ATC's in-house facility. Hand-wound voice coils are made from flat, oxygen-free copper wire and operate in a precision long magnetic gap. Specially designed magnet vents not only reduce airflow noise and heat but also increase power handling and reliability. These drivers are designed to give you a smooth and even frequency response without built-in EQ. In short, the SCM12 Pro was designed to perform to exacting professional standards.

ATC's history of world-class audio

ATC has focused on one thing - creating the best speakers possible - since 1974. In the SCM12 Pro, you'll find that every component was designed for maximum accuracy and sonic clarity. For example, ATC's electronic crossover has built-in phase correction, solving a problem that causes smeared audio or a lack of definition. And ATC's famous Super Linear drivers reduce harmonic distortion by 10dB-15dB compared to similar speakers, which means you'll hear every nuance of your audio exactly as it was recorded and mixed. If you want to make great-sounding recordings that translate to the world outside your studio, accurate monitors are a must. Sweetwater's advice: you can't go wrong with the studio monitors trusted by George Massenburg, Chuck Ainlay, Nathaniel Kunkel, and many other world-renowned engineers: ATC.

Reviews

Niceee
An excellent high fidelity choice. Crisp detailed midrange that is ruthlessly accurate and a nice balanced natural sound with less low end. You don't need a sub once you understand whats going on. Sub will get you down to hearing that kick crush.

I tried to go the budget amplifier route with them. Don't...they work, but don't expect magic until you get a good amp paired with them. They are one of the best mixing tools I own. you can hear the problems easily, theres no glossing them over.

It's a nice step into the ATC sound without breaking the bank. If you can afford it, go for the scm 25's. Still the scm 12's will get you on par with professional productions. (with a good amp and good dac).

Very enjoyable to listen to my vinyl collection on as well. Also, non fatiguing for long sessions. Happy mixing.
Great speakers for accurate monitoring
As part of a studio upgrade I bought the ATC's on the recommendation of a friend who is a recording engineer.
I set them up as specified in the owners manual (60,60,60 triangle) with the listening spot at one of the points and at a height of 38 inches from the floor. Mine are 10 inches from the wall. Due to space requirements I built my own stands with red oak and fastened them to the floor.
These speakers are very directional. The stereo imaging is amazing and the mid-range is crisp and clear. It is like listening to a very good pair of headphones.
I highly recommend these for mixing and mastering. They will let you know what you have. I augmented them with a PreSonus Pro10 sub set at 80hz low pass which really fills out the low end.

ATCs -- Not Just Pro Audio, Music Appreciation Audio
I've had the SCM12 Pro's for about 4 years. I half expected a bright, ruthless sound from them, but what I got was a very unusual blend of great clarity, great dynamics, and genuine musical truthfulness. I suppose if one uses bright digital equipment, streamer, or amp, these speakers will simply relay the brightness. But what I got with a source components that please me was extremely pleasing sound. I paired these ATCs with a sub, but honestly, it's not necessary. The bass is excellent. I've recommended these speakers to many people...
You won't be disappointed with these.
After weeks of research and reading reviews, I settled on these and hoped they wouldn't disappoint me. I need not have worried because these are exceptional quality speakers at a very good price. If you want accurate monitors at a low price you won't find better than these, these really deserve six stars. Absolutely awesome pair of monitors! Well packed and delivered fast thanks to Sweetwater's excellent service as always.
Rock Solid
I've been through all the usual suspects of monitors that one would expect. Dynaudio, JBL, Presonus, Yamaha, Eve, APS, etc....There were great things about a lot of those, but also some flaws that I couldn't get past. I decided to get the ATC's because I wanted my monitoring to be the best it could possibly be. The SCM12's did not disappoint. They are extremely honest and don't hype anything. There is practically zero distortion coming from the speaker, so what you are hearing is exactly what you get. Unless you're doing bass heavy music, there is a very usable, balanced low end coming from these. Again, it's not hyped, just "right". Mixes translate wonderfully and they are not tiring at all to work on. I also picked up the ATC P1 amplifier to power them. If you don't have access to some other high end amplification, I highly recommend the matching amp. A friend of mine put it very well when he said, "You wouldn't buy a Ferrari and put a Honda engine in it would you?" These speakers deserve great amplification, and they will reward you for it. There are a lot of monitoring choices when you get into this price range, especially factoring in the amplifier. In the end it will come down to what suits your needs best, but I will say, I've never heard anyone ever say a bad thing about ATC's. While other brands have their fans and critics, ATC's are always respected no matter who you ask. This was a big purchase, but it's already paying off in the efficiency of my work. I plan on holding onto these for a long time.
