Upgraded Pickups Offer Sweet, Vintage-inspired Tone

Playing the PRS S2 Standard 22 solidbody electric guitar is a treat. The way its asymmetric bevel-cut mahogany double-cutaway shape hugs your body feels extremely comfortable, and its rosewood-capped Pattern Regular neck is a joy to wrap your hand around. Experience remarkable vintage sweetness, clarity, and extended tonal range, courtesy of the PRS S2 Standard 22's upgraded 58/15 "S" humbuckers. Create subtle, expressive nuances, or perform full dive-bombs while maintaining perfect intonation, by virtue of this guitar's vibrato bridge/tailpiece. The PRS S2 Standard 22 is a great-sounding, great-playing solidbody electric guitar.

PRS 58/15 "S" pickups offer remarkable clarity and extended tonal range

Playing your favorite licks through the PRS S2 Standard 22's covered 58/15 "S" pickups is a wonderful experience. That's because 58/15 "S" pickups are modeled after the 58/15 pickups Paul Reed Smith designed for PRS’s 30th Anniversary. From shimmering cleans to blistering high-gain tones, the clarity and extended tonal range provided by these pickups make the S2 Standard 22 the ideal workhorse guitar. A push-pull tone pot further fortifies your sonic arsenal with a range of spanky single-coil tones. At Sweetwater, we love the sweetened, vintage-inspired sound of 58/15 "S" humbuckers.

The PRS S2 series of guitars: extreme value

In their never-ending quest for guitar perfection, PRS has created the S2 series of guitars. These guitars were designed to give you all the tone and playability that the PRS Maryland factory is known for in an affordable, beautiful instrument. Key features of this series include PRS S2 locking tuners, custom-wound pickups, the PRS Pattern Regular neck shape, PRS bridge, and a hybrid gloss finish. The PRS S2 Standard 22 delivers amazing playability and big guitar tone at a killer price.

Pattern Regular profile neck feels great and plays smoothly

The PRS S2 Standard 22 gives you a Pattern Regular-profile mahogany neck fitted with a rosewood fretboard. A hallmark of PRS quality, neck shapes are, of course, critical to your playing experience. Perfected after years of prototyping, the Pattern Regular neck carve is based on Paul Reed Smith's original, pre-factory neck design — the same one used on instruments he built in the late '80s at PRS's Virginia Avenue location. You'll love the playability and feel of the PRS S2 Standard 22 electric guitar!

PRS S2 Standard 22 Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Comfortable contoured mahogany body with asymmetric beveled top
  • Easy-playing mahogany Pattern Regular neck with rosewood fingerboard, 22 frets, and dot inlays
  • PRS 58/15 "S" humbucking pickups offer remarkable clarity and extended tonal range
  • Push-pull tone pot serves up spanky single-coil tones
  • PRS S2 vibrato bridge/tailpiece delivers everything from subtle expression to full dive-bombs
  • PRS S2 locking tuners provide rock-solid intonation

A few issues out of the box, otherwise a great guitar

I've had this guitar for a few months now, and decided I would get past the honeymoon phase before writing a review. As the title suggests, there were a handful of problems with this guitar, which I believe are unacceptable at this price point.

Firstly, the intonation was way off. I spent the better part of an afternoon just trying to tune this thing, but it was off no matter how carefully I tried. Also, the strings were audibly binding at the nut. The tremolo would pull them completely out of tune even with the slightest touch. For as much as PRS touts this tremolo, it just didn't keep tune at all. So I had to bring my guitar to a shop to get set up immediately after receiving it. This is in fact the second time I've had to do this with a $+ guitar that I bought from Sweetwater, and it makes me wonder how many thousands of dollars I must spend before getting a guitar that is good to go out of the box. However, Sweetwater has great customer service as always, and they reimbursed me for the setup cost.

Next, there were scratches on the finish of the guitar. They are kind of difficult to see in the pictures, but they are definitely there. I initially thought this may have been from when I had to wiggle the box to get it out of the shipping container. After having this guitar for a while, it became obvious that these scratches must have been there previously because there's no way some light jostling would have caused them. The rest of the finish looked perfect in comparison. I also discovered some tooling marks around the fret ends. They may also be tough to see here, but I tried to shine some light on them for the pictures. They mostly seem to be on the treble side of the neck. The fret work is great otherwise.

After I got my guitar back from getting setup, the tone knob cut out. I thought it must have been dust from the shop, but they cleaned it and it was still cutting out, so it had to be replaced. Initially when I got the guitar, the tone knob was very loose. I thought it just needed to be tightened better to the pot. It must have just been a cheap pot, since the new one does not wiggle at all. I understand that sometimes electronic parts can fail, but I really expected better on a brand new $ PRS. Again, Sweetwater with their great customer service reimbursed me for the cost of the replacement. By this point, my guitar shop had the guitar for longer than I did.

Those are the problems that came with the guitar. Now onto the good stuff...

The neck on this axe is amazing. I love it. I have small hands, and always loved my Strat (9.5" radius), so it makes sense that the 10" radius here would feel similar. It just fits my hand perfectly. I've long believed that you need to find a guitar that you don't have to think about to play. I have a Schecter with 12"-16" compound radius, extra jumbo frets, and although the neck is very nice, it has never felt effortless to play for me. This PRS is just so easy to play, you won't want to put it down. It is also quite a beautiful guitar, so you will want to stare at the finish. Everyone who has seen it has remarked at how beautiful it is. It is quite fetching, and the rosewood on my fingerboard is fairly dark, so it matches the rest of the finish. The guitar is also well balanced. I always stand when I play, and it fits nicely and is comfortable. I find while sitting, the body shape tends to slide off my leg. It's always better to play guitar standing up.

This guitar sounds great as well. I saw some reviews complaining about the pickups, but I don't see (or hear) what there is to complain about. They sound fantastic both clean and dirty. By the way, this guitar LOVES gain. It sounds monstrous with my OR-15 amp, also with my mini Soldano. These pickups must be a little hot, because I find myself rolling back the gain a little bit, even moreso than my Schecter with the Fluence! I even lowered the pickups when I got the guitar. The PRS has a good bit of bass, which I like. It gets pretty heavy. I find it has a bit less midrange, which is easily changed with your amp settings. The tone knob has a wide sweep, so you can dial in anything you'd like. It really sounds great anywhere. The clean tones are classic PRS. They have a certain clarity that is distinct to the brand. The coil split is quite nice as well, but don't expect it to sound like a Strat. It simply sounds like a single coil PRS. There is a significant volume dip when split, tho
ugh. Still, they are great tones and there's not a bad sound anywhere.

Now the tremolo... it's good? I have never been a fan of tremolos, but it seems that most of the guitars I look at have them. It would be nice if they made this guitar in a hard tail. I decided to take the plunge and try it anyway, since they claim how great this one is. It's weird, it seems to go back and forth between wanting to stay in tune or go completely out of tune. You can wham on this thing to your heart's content, and it will still come back, although a few strings may be out. It's like it wants to stay in tune, but in reality, tremolos just don't stay in tune, not even Floyd Rose. So don't believe the hype over any trem system, they will not stay even 99% in tune no matter what. I find myself tuning this guitar a lot, even after just bending the strings. I don't understand why they are on so many professional guitars when they just wreck your tuning with the simplest use, and they are a nightmare to intonate. However, the action on this trem does feel nice and smooth, almo
st machine like. If that's your thing, then I guess you'll like it, just expect to be tuning your guitar constantly.

Lastly, I feel that PRS really scrimps with their guitar cases. You can get many lesser priced guitars with a hard case. I was initially looking at the Dusty Waring PRS, which is $ and still doesn't come with a hard case. The gig bag this comes with is not something I would ever use to transport this guitar. It's a beater bag for sure, not nearly padded enough for a nice instrument. Is PRS really hurting for those pennies they are pinching by not including a hard case? That is one of my only complaints about PRS. Just give me a hard case! The materials for them are nothing. These gig bags should come with a free bowl of soup. It's just good customer service at this price point to offer a case, even if it costs an extra $.

In conclusion, this is a nicely built instrument that will last a lifetime. It is beautiful, and sounds and plays great. It just had some unfortunate issues out of the box that held back my rating. It's always a bummer to have to service your brand new guitar. Also, the lack of hard case is points off, because there are so many other guitars that come with a hard case and cost less. Still, I find myself reaching for this guitar whenever I have a minute. It's just a nice instrument and plays incredibly well. The neck is the real star of the show, it feels great. I think that's all you can really ask for in a guitar- must play well, sound great, and look great. Next song.

Niiiicce

Fantastic attention to detail and craftsmanship. Pickups sound super clear. Nice Stratty tone in coil tap mode. The guitar resonates thoroughly for a noticeably longer period of time than other guitars. Guitar came already setup and intonated. Frets are smooth and nicely finished around the neck.. and speaking of the neck, this one is a champ. To me, it feels like a the perfect les Paul neck. It's deep enough to give you something to hold onto when wailing some old Hendrix. The neck radius is not too flat, and not too curved. The S2 McCarty 594 thin line neck is slightly wider but thinner. The tremolo is very stable and easy to articulate. Much less force required to operate than other guitars at the same price point. The finish is gorgeous. No flaws that I can find. If you want something like a les Paul or a strat but don't want to go with those old brands, try this out, it's a keeper.

Outstanding Guitar

I've been wanting a PRS for some time now and have been looking at all the different models, I finally picked one just like this and I'm so glad I bought it. Its much nicer then the pictures and plays so nice. I've never played a guitar with as nice a neck as this has and I've got a few high end American made guitars.

If your thinking about it, go for it, you will be glad you did. As always working with Dylan my Sales Rep was great and he did everything he could to get my "New PRS" delivered as soon as possible.
