A Royal Blend of Fuzz and Overdrive

The Beetronics FX Royal Jelly is a dual-circuit, dual-channel monster that proves there’s still plenty of uncharted territory to explore in the world of dirtboxes! This pedal’s two channels function identically, but there’s one major distinction: the King and Queen knobs. These two controls blend the Royal Jelly’s smooth overdrive and pummeling fuzz; since they’re independent, they essentially act as two tonal presets of your favorite OD/Fuzz formula. Once you’ve found your ideal dirt tones, the Royal Jelly’s powerful Hi/Lo EQ knobs offer plenty of sonic sculpting power, boasting a 10dB boost/cut for their respective frequencies. What’s more, the Buzz footswitch injects your tone with treble bite that brings to mind the wildest fuzzboxes of the past. Finally, the Royal Jelly’s Dry knob allows you to mix in your dry signal for added articulation, making this flexible pedal equally useful on more unconventional sources such as bass and synth.

Queen and King channels

In addition to being a dual-circuit pedal, the Royal jelly boasts two channels that can be used as presets. Queen and King are identical in function, but as each one contains a separate OD/Fuzz blend, you can set each to a drastically different level and instantly switch between them! Sweetwater guitarists find that this essentially gives the Royal Jelly the power of two stompboxes, and it’s an excellent tool for kicking up the heat during a solo section or effortlessly switching up textures during the middle of a song.

Powerful tone-shaping tools

The Royal Jelly’s versatility is further enhanced by two powerful EQ tools — the Hi/Lo knobs and the Buzz footswitch. Both the Hi and Lo knobs go far beyond your typical tone control, featuring up to a 10dB boost/cut for their respective frequencies. This allows you to dial anything from dark, doomy fuzz to a piercing high end punch, and it’s a great way to keep tonal consistency across your two channels. Fan of the harsh, abrasive tones often found on vintage fuzzboxes? Simply kick on the Buzz footswitch for an extra helping of treble aggression!

Sleek style and a custom PC-Bee

As much as we appreciate Beetronics FX's dedication to sonic innovation, we can’t help but be equally blown away by how each of their pedals knocks it out of the park when it comes to the visual department! The Royal Jelly’s vintage inspiration goes far beyond its tone, boasting an oversized slanted enclosure that brings to mind all the coolest classic fuzzboxes of the '60s and '70s. Not content to simply wow us with external cosmetics, cracking open the Overhive reveals a custom PCB that features bee-inspired art!

Beetronics FX Royal Jelly Features:

  • 2 channels (King and Queen) allow you to instantly recall 2 preset blends of Fuzz/OD
  • Hi and Lo knobs offer powerful tonal sculpting

Reviews

Pure Magic
This thing sounds amazing! Honestly I would buy it again just for how awesome the overdrive sounds. But add blending in fuzz and your dry signal too? Sign me up. Having 2 presets on this is killer because the transition sounds so natural.
The fuzz is good but best with the middle buzz switch on. One of the best sounds I've found is a 50/50ish blend with the buzz switch on.
Makes a great stack with a J Rockett Archer (clon type).
This is my first Beetronics pedal but they've made a fan out of me for sure.
Flexible and Classic
This pedal covers a lot of ground. For someone like me who enjoys fuzz units as overdrive boxes, it approaches 'Holy Grail' level. Both overdrive and fuzz sections sound familiar and related to each other well. The eq is pretty amazing and works well across it's entire spectrum. The blend knob can insert other overdrive/fuzz tones into or pass some raw guitar signal through to the next in the chain. The Buzz switch adds a high end fuzz layer that effectively gives this one box 4 distinct fuzz characters. Using all that's available in the box will require you to find balance points that work with your rig, so there will be some compromises to deal with as far as the shared eq blend and output. I have mine feeding into a Packrat and behind a Broverdrive and a Friedman Sir Compre. I find that this pedal really brings out the best in my other boxes. It makes me feel both nostalgic and trend setting. Not a bad place to be.
Music background: way, way too long at it.
very versatile overdrive and fuzz
this pedal really reminds me of some tones out of royal blood and muse that's why i love this pedal. ive had it for more than 4 months and i am very surprised on the versatility. i made some synth sounds using an octave pedal before it and love playing it live. i have the octahive and the overhive from beetronics and i could say the overdrive side of the royal jelly is somewhat like the overhive. this really is a blender between fuzz and od so youll definitely find a sweet spot.
Music background: metal, blues, alternative, jazz
