This Long-scale RGD is Primed for Down-tuned Metal

If your repertoire includes lots of djent-y chugging, you need an axe built to withstand an aggressive down-tuned assault. Enter the Ibanez Prestige RGD3121. This beastly solidbody electric guitar's body positively growls with a warm-yet-defined tone that pairs perfectly with a set of multi-voice Fishman Fluence Modern ceramic humbuckers. The RGD3121's comfortable 5-piece Wizard HP neck is a joy to wrap your hand around, and its 24-fret Macassar ebony fingerboard, which is enhanced by Ibanez's Prestige fret edge treatment, yields lightning-fast playability for high-register shredding and furious riffing alike. What's more, this guitar's 26.5-inch scale works in tandem with a Mono-rail hardtail bridge to deliver rock-solid intonation with heavy string gauges — an essential for down-tuned playing styles. You also get Gotoh locking tuners, a Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut, and an attention-grabbing satin poly finish. Every player in the progressive metal genre owes it to themselves to give the Prestige RGD3121 a serious audition.

Incredibly fast Wizard HP neck

Ibanez Wizard necks are thin and built for speed, and they enable effortless playability and comfort. The Prestige RGD3121 takes that design to the next level with its 5-piece maple/wenge Wizard HP neck. The just-right feel provided by this neck's satin finish encourages lightning-fast runs, arpeggios, and hammer-ons. Capping the neck is a 24-fret Macassar ebony fingerboard, which is turbocharged by Ibanez's Prestige fret edge treatment and loaded with jumbo frets. On top of that, the RGD3121 boasts an extra-long 26.5-inch scale, allowing it to accurately intonate heavier string gauges. In other words, it's the perfect beast for down-tuned metal.

Fishman Fluence Modern ceramic humbuckers

The Fishman Fluence Modern ceramic humbuckers in the Ibanez Prestige RGD3121 deliver the most sought-after humbucking tones, from modern active to high-output humbucking. Unlike most wire-wound models, Fluence pickups manage to serve up this massive tone arsenal without noise or inductance issues. On top of that, Fishman Fluence Modern humbuckers provide you with your choice of two distinctly different voices for each pickup. You can change the voicing via the mini toggle between the knobs.

Mono-rail bridge optimizes string vibrations

The Prestige RGD3121 features Ibanez's Mono-rail bridge, which uses a single bridge piece for each individual string. The guitarists here at Sweetwater have found that this provides tighter component coupling and improves the transfer of string vibrations to the tonewood for a purer, more resonant sound. Additionally, it prevents the vibration of strings from impacting each other, which can increase articulation.

Ibanez Prestige RGD3121 Electric Guitar Features:

  • Basswood body growls with a warm-yet-defined acoustic tone
  • Comfortable 5-piece maple/wenge Wizard HP neck
  • Ultra-playable 24-fret Macassar ebony fingerboard with Prestige fret edge treatment
  • Extra-long 26.5-inch scale enables accurate intonation with heavier string gauges
  • Multi-voice Fishman Fluence Modern ceramic humbuckers yield aggressive yet articulate high-gain tones
  • Gotoh locking tuners allow for super-fast string changes
  • Mono-rail single-string bridge configuration optimizes string vibration
  • Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut safeguards against string binding
  • Luminlay side dots let you know where you are in the dark
  • Attention-grabbing satin poly finish

RGD3121 Owner

Superior craftsmanship from Hoshino Gakki, Ibanez owners, Japan (RGD3121 Polar Lights).

I'd recommend this or any MIJ Ibanez models. In the past, I've tried the Indonesian S series SML721, and a few other S + RG series which were not MIJ. Could never fall in love with the neck/fret design and feel. The guitars were great looking, but the playability and feel def kept me away from Ibanez for a few years. Fast forward 2024.

In summary, love this guitar. It's easy to play and the craftsmanship really stands above other countries that produce the RGD series (or Ibanez in general). I dont find the knobs getting in the way when strumming and the frets are solid for bends and heavy progressions/chords. The neck is solid, well constructed, feels great (for medium sized hands). I slightly lowered the action and there is zero fret buzz, like
