Fast and Furious

Featuring a fast maple Wizard III neck and jatoba fingerboard with a 15.7" radius, the Ibanez RGA42FM solidbody electric guitar is purpose-built for high-speed, low-drag playing. It all starts with a perfectly balanced RG mahogany body topped with gorgeous figured maple. You'll love how this guitar feels as soon as you pick it up. And it sports two hot Quantum humbucking pickups, ideal for rock, blues, and metal. You want a guitar that won't hold you back. Sweetwater has your axe: the Ibanez RGA42FM.

Classic RG performance

The Ibanez RG series of guitars has remained a standard in rock music for the last couple of decades, thanks to the effortless playability of its Wizard III neck. Switching between aggressive rhythm playing and fluid lead lines is effortless on this slim-profile neck. The guitarists here at Sweetwater love the feel and playability of Ibanez's RG guitars. You will too!

Fixed bridge stability for rock-solid tuning

The Ibanez RGA42FM sports a fixed bridge, which means no tuning hassles due to a floating vibrato. From standard to lowered tunings your guitar's tuning will be more stable and the string tension will feel looser. When you change tunings at a gig you'll be ready to rock without messing with the bridge or locking nuts.

Gargantuan tonal range

With two Quantum humbucking pickups and 5-way switching, you'll be able to shape your tone any way you like on the RGA42FM. With its aggressive visuals and high output, it will forever be known as a rock guitar, however, the RGA42FM's fast playability and tonal variety make it a great instrument for almost any style.

Ibanez RGA42FM Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Left-handed model
  • Classic Ibanez RG playability and looks at a wallet-friendly price
  • Well-balanced mahogany body topped with gorgeous figured maple
  • Fast 3-piece maple Wizard III neck lets you set your own speed limit
  • 2 Quantum humbucking pickups and 5-way switching for a wide tonal range
  • Fixed bridge gives you top-notch tuning stability
  • An iconic rock guitar, but with playability that's perfect for blues and jazz too

Reviews

Solid Build with One Opportunity for Improvement
I reviewed this guitar on YouTube (see link) and also did a detailed exam and assessment, under the microscope.

The guitar was a solid build but had some uneven frets, which I fixed.

This is a budget price guitar so they do not level the frets at the factory. But it is my understanding that Sweetwater does offer a PLEK-ing service, which would obviously take care of any uneven frets.

Love it!
I got this guitar as a back up guitar to keep at my in-law's place instead of traveling with my other guitars and it's great!

I'm a huge ibanez fan since the first electric I ever learned on was an RG and after trying out a bunch of different guitars, there's really nothing like the ibanez feel in my opinion. I had recently acquired an RGAR42HP and it's my main 6 string guitar so I wanted something similar to use while traveling. Like the RGAR42HP the FM feels amazing in the hand (the neck shape and body are the same and I'm a huge fan of the ibanez feel). It's super light which is nice (even though I don't stand and play a lot it's still way better than my telecaster).

The build quality is really great even for a non japanese built guitar and I haven't found anything to call out. The color is sick too! I was kind of skeptical seeing pictures online since the blue lagoon kind of looked almost denim-y but I managed to get a darker one thanks to the sweetwater gallery and it looks even better in person. The hardware is great and feels solid. Out the box it's pretty nice to play. I had to adjust the pickup height a bit but other than that it was pretty much good to go.

The one downside to the guitar that I heard when doing research on it was that the pickups are lacking, and I'm probably spoiled since my two other ibanezs both have dimarzio fusions in them so, yes they don't really compare in that regard but they're still really good. The 5 way switch still gives you a lot of versatility in the sound and I'm mostly using this to practice and write while I'm traveling so in that regard it checks all the boxes.

For the price point it's an amazing guitar considering my other RGA is almost 2x the price. The shape and feel are all the same, the materials are different but it's not drastically affecting how I approach the instrument.

I'm really stoked to have this around and look forward to coming to play it more often, hell maybe one day I'll swap the pick ups on it as a little experiment.
Great guitar for price
I have owned higher end Ibanez in the past and I can say this guitar is awesome, especially for the price. I initially was looking for an LTD (ESP) as I have a nice LTD Eclipse but I really prefer the Strat style body. I could not find an LTD in my price range that I wanted. I was looking for a Strat style body with no double locking trem with two humbuckers- thats it. But, unfortunately LTD made very few of those in my price range and I did not like the colors. So, I took a chance on this Ibanez - but knowing full well what I was getting as Ive owned two previously and wish I still had them. This guitar is great. I havent even swapped the pups and I cant complain about the sound. That being said, I am running a Boss Katana w/ Celestion vintage 30. Idk what this guitar sounds like through a tube amp - I suspect it would need some pups. But, playability is top notch. I love this guitar. I tuned it down to drop C and have been mostly playing killswitch engage and running scales for increased accuracy, speed, and dexterity. 10/10 would buy this guitar again.
Changed my outlook!
I was always a Les Paul guy until I played this. So smooth and light! My LPs are about 10-11lbs. This puppy was like 7lbs. I thought I put a feather on! I've been researching on buying a few and there and the RGA and S Series. So thin and light!

I wish they came in more colors, I'm not a fan of the other two.

Great guitar to explore Ibanez RG territory
I chose the RGA42FM to explore the Ibanez RG specific features.
Like all my previous experiences with Sweetwater, everything from ordering to shipment and the quality out of the box, was excellent.
The guitar was set up well and the entire experience was awesome.
