A Classic Drum Machine Enhanced for Modern Producers

With its punchy bass drum, snappy snare, and crispy cymbals, the Behringer RD-9 Rhythm Designer brings the authentic sound of one the most iconic drum machines in history to modern producers. With full MIDI connectivity, USB, Sync I/O, and trigger outputs, it’s ready to integrate seamlessly with your production system. A dedicated control allows you to trigger step repeats and note repeats on the fly for creative performance potential. Plus, given its built-in effects section featuring an analog filter and a versatile wave designer, the Behringer RD-9 Rhythm Designer packs more sound shaping options than the original groove box ever offered.

Authentic 909 sounds, Enhanced sonic control

The Behringer RD-9 offers two modes: Authentic and Enhanced. In Authentic mode, each drum sound behaves exactly like it would on the original 909, while Enhanced mode brings three extra controls into play. With Enhanced mode, your bass drum can be additionally shaped with the P. Depth and Pitch knobs for an extended tuning and modulation range. Enhanced mode also activates the Hi-hat Tune control, giving you more control over how your hats sit in your mix.

Add maximum grooviness with Global accents

Producers at Sweetwater agree that tastefully applying accents is one of the best ways to create drum machine grooves that make you want to move. The Behringer RD-9 makes it easy to add accents to individual drums like you’d expect, and it also packs the legendary Global accent feature that producers loved about the original version. Hold the Tap/Hold button and select a step in your sequence, and that step will be accented for all sounds triggered at that step. Give it a try: fire up a groove; apply Global accents to steps 1, 5, 9, and 13; then start turning up the Accent level knob to hear your groove come to life.

Craft full songs and performances with Pattern Mode and Song Mode

Starting from its 64-step sequencer, the RD-9 Rhythm Designer is capable of saving up to 256 custom patterns. From there, you can use Pattern Mode to arrange patterns into complete songs, and even program the number of repeats for each song part. For full performances, Song Mode allows you to chain complete songs together, which is perfect for live sets or more complex arrangements.

Automatable stereo analog filter

The RD-9 adds to the sonic flexibility of the original unit by adding a stereo analog filter. This dual-mode (LPF/HPF) filter gives you dedicated cutoff and resonance controls, and knob movements can be recorded as part of your pattern.

Reviews

Long Live Behringer!
This is my first drum machine and I'm guessing it'll be my last. Right out of the box it had me utterly captivated. I love its sound, style, layout and ease of use. I now know the thrill bands like Skinny Puppy and Daft Punk experience long ago with the original TR-909, but at a fraction of it's original 1983 price.
A big shout out to my Sweetwater rep Greg Lanning for making every transaction a refreshingly smooth experience. Thanks Greg!
I really love this drum machine
This is a great drum machine especially if you add effect pedals like reverb and distortion on it. Nice thick heavy kick and the hats cut threw the mix nicely. Very easy to figure out how to use too

Great clone! Great price!
I was afraid it had the same firmware issues as the RD8 when it came out, but no: everything works perfectly.
Five stars for Uli
Perfect for Teen Pop Synth Pop Electronic Dance New Wave
We produce original teen pop, techno, electronic dance music, and cover 80s new wave too. I've tried the plug-ins, and also have a Roland R-8 Mk II and Roland TD-20 drum module. The plug ins are weak. The R-8 Mk II and TD-20 do have sampled sounds of the TR-808 and TR-909 and sound great, but you cannot modulate and change them up like the analog source models. That's because they are sampled. This RD-9 sounds fantastic. The original analog sounds sparkle and sizzle, and can be manipulated and synced in real-time for live performance, or while tracking in the studio. I'll stop talking now. If you want to check out just a small sample of what it can sound like, look up Lysette Lee RD-9 on YouTube.

Amazing Drum Machine, Classic Interface
The RD-9 offers the most fun I've had with a drum machine since the early 90s. Behringer nailed this one. Not only is this updated version of a 909 packed with features the original didn't have, it was carefully rethought to include some creature-comforts that bring it in to the modern age. The sound is on-point. Instantly in the groove. Mixable right out of the box. The build quality is great, the price is surprising. My first noodling session lasted six hours straight - the only breaks were drum breaks. The technical depth is there along with ease of access to all the bits a producer would care about.

I was worried about the big keys along the bottom. They do not feel like keyboard keys. Turns out, I shouldn't have been worried. They feel great with a clear "detent" when engaged, but it isn't "clicky" in a way that would annoy you while working a beat. It has a sort of satisfying "thud" when pressed. The multi-colored LEDs are a massive improvement over older gear and the implementation well designed. Gives all the information needed when playing live and programming. They also look great.

In the interest of fairness, there are probably some downsides. One is the knobs. The black knobs on the left are the same knobs used on other Behringer products like the Crave. Cheap and not great. The grey knobs feel like an improved version of those same knobs. They are usable, though a bit slippery given how close the knobs are together in that section. I tested some Chroma Caps on the unit. It was a major improvement in terms of "grippyness" and adding a premium solid feel. Made it much easier to deal with the close spacing of the knobs. Buyers may want to consider adding better knobs if they'll be using this kit regularly, or playing live.

Candidly, the cheaper bits are totally okay. I'd rather Behringer keep these units low cost to encourage new musicians to get in to this gear. My teen daughter played with the RD-9 for two hours. She's never done that with a piece of kit before, and I've got a fairly well appointed studio. It is a very approachable unit that will hopefully encourage young people to get in to music production.
