Instant Classic Active Stereo Ribbon Mic

The AEA R88 Mk 2 was an instant hit at Sweetwater. The Phantom powered AEA R88A delivers the same award-winning stereo sound as its passive stablemate, but with 12dB more gain, courtesy of custom toroid transformers. The The R88A effortlessly renders the full impact and nuance of any source; be it piano, drums, strings — or any other instruments with complex transients. The AEA R88A active ribbon microphone captures the stereo soundfield as your ears perceive it with open, honest tonality.

Use with any preamp, on any source

The R88A operates on standard 48V phantom power. The mic’s 12dB of additional transformer gain is ideal for recording quiet sources such as whispered vocals or softly played acoustic guitars. The extra gain also enhances the mic’s versatility, letting choose a preamp based on sound, not gain or input impedance. The active impedance buffers also help prevent noise interference on longer cable runs or when operating near lighting rigs.

Great stereo recordings with a single mic

Utilizing two of AEA’s signature Big Ribbon elements, the R88A active stereo ribbon microphone is able to get a huge stereo spread with a single mic. Angled at 90 degrees and mounted in close proximity to each other along the vertical axis of the microphone, the ribbon elements are optimized to capture large ensembles as a great main mic. It is an excellent orchestral and choral recording microphone, and shines on applications such as horn sections and drum overheads. Whether in a high-end studio or in your home desktop application, the R88A puts the listener right in the recording room.

Larger ribbon element for wider frequencies and higher SPLs

The soul of the AEA R88A is two large pure aluminum low-tension ribbon elements. At 2.35" by 0.185" by 2 micron, they’re exactly like the one used in the classic R44. The resonant frequency of a good ribbon microphone design should be as low as possible and longer ribbons result in higher sound pressure level (SPL) handling. The R88A’s Big Ribbon technology ensures you’ll achieve a sound that is smooth and natural. This adds up to a sound that is amazingly close to what your ears will hear when actually standing in the studio with the sound source.

A list of Grammy awards that keeps growing

The true value of a piece of gear can be measured by a list of its users and where they use it. The AEA R88 stereo ribbon mics are shining examples of this. Top recording engineers like Joe Chiccarelli, Chuck Ainlay, and Vance Powell trust the AEA R88 so much that Nashville’s Blackbird Studios has an R88A in every single room. The list of Grammy and Academy Award winning projects recorded with the R88 is long and distinguished, and with the introduction of the Mk 2 version and now the active R88A, it keeps on growing. Every serious studio should invest in a high-quality active stereo ribbon mic — and the AEA R88A is an instant classic.

Reviews

Just Sounds Better
I've just started using the AEA R88A in my studio, and I'm genuinely impressed. I've tried it on both drum overheads and acoustic guitar so far, and in both cases the results were beautifully natural — full of depth, with a smooth top and a rich, balanced tone that doesn't need much EQ.

The stereo image is wide but coherent, and it captures dynamics and nuance in a way that's immediately musical. This mic doesn't hype anything — it just sounds right, especially in a well-treated room. Based on my early impressions and the broader reputation of this mic, I can already tell it's going to become a go-to for stereo sources in my studio.

Can't say enough good things about the R88A
I am using this in my spacious living room whilst in COVID-19 lockdown. So far I've used it in front of solo and duo guitars setups and as an ambient room mic. I couldn't be happier! Currently I'm using a very simple recording chain: the R88A into a Zoom H6, plus assorted other dynamic and cardioid mics when called for. And it delivers surprisingly great results. As you would expect, this mic has wonderful clarity and detail, tho you do have to pay attention to the low end as it can get a tad boomy on acoustic guitar if the mic isn't placed properly. Does a killer job on both male (me) and female (my wife's) voices. Really spectacular as an ambient mic too. I place it about 6 to 8 feet away from sound sources and it delivers an excellent ambient background. Did I already say it does a superb job of recording solo acoustic guitar? Gibson J-45, Hummingbird, Martin HD-35, HD12-28 and Taylor Baritone 8 all love this mic!! Have used it sparingly on electric guitars, mostly 18 inches and further away from a cab. I have no doubt it would pair well with a dynamic mic of your liking to add some high end bite. I'm looking forward to using this mic out in the wild once the pandemic craziness abates.

I would not hesitate in the least to recommend the R88A. If you liked the R88 MKII, you'll definitely appreciate the lower noise floor and the active electronics of the R88A. Sell your Cloudlifters and get this mic!

Kudos to my SW engineer Drew Foster for providing excellent support and advice!!

It puts you in the room
I've been recording guitar, flute piano, conga drums etc using midside and Blumlein recording technique. It's a magical microphone! If I had to choose a "desert island" mic, this might be it.

This mic rules
I am drummer that does a lot of tracking sessions out of my house. The R88a is a game changer for my purposes. Great for Rooms or OH…I don't think I could live without at this point.
44 + 44 = 88. To my ears my R44CXE captures the most beautiful vocals I've recorded in my life, and now I have a perfect phase proof factory matched stereo Blumlein pair of the 44 in one mic, the R88A. Buying my first AEA mic was every bit as important as the day I bought my first Harley. If you know, you know. This is my second AEA ribbon. I love ribbon mics. They're classic and smooth and articulate and I'm obsessed with the sound. No more fighting with phase on an acoustic instrument. I'm in love with these mics. The videos both here and on the AEA website, including their YouTube channel, were extremely helpful in my decision to purchase the 88, one of the most incredible mics out there today. I'm very pleased. And a shout out to my rep, Ryan Gregory, who shares my obsession with ribbons and made it a fun decision to get this mic.
