Inject Your Amp with Tubelike Overdrive

Ready to cook some tubes? Then put the EarthQuaker Devices Plumes between your guitar and amp. Armed with JFET op-amps, this high-headroom overdrive is chock-full of chime and clarity. Three different modes enable you to inject grind into your playing with symmetrical LED clipping, goose your amp with a wide-open op-amp clean boost, or give yourself a transparent dirty boost with asymmetrical silicon diode clipping. And once you dial in your clipping voice, you can mold it to perfection with a fine-tuned Tone control. What’s more, EarthQuaker Devices’ Flexi-switch enables you to use momentary- and latching-style switching simultaneously. If you want your amp to sing with well-sculpted lows, focused mids, and ultra-clear highs, Plumes is your one-way ticket to tonal nirvana.

This ain’t your father’s green overdrive pedal

Plumes is green. It’s an overdrive. But it’s not another direct clone of the oft-duplicated pedal guitarists far and wide are familiar with — for many reasons. First of all, Plumes eschews the typical JRC4558 circuit and bipolar transistor buffers for JFET op-amps. It also raises the input impedance to nearly 10 megaohms. Plumes is powered by internally converting its 9-volt input to +/- 9 volts. All in all, Plumes offers lower noise and improved signal integrity over its predecessor, along with increased headroom, extra dimensionality, and added clarity. It also imparts a healthy dose of compression with truckloads of sustain.

One of the most versatile overdrives out there

Many overdrives are one-trick ponies, but not Plumes — its three clipping modes make it one of the most versatile overdrive stompboxes out there. Mode 1 offers symmetrical LED clipping, supplying you with loads of crunch and compression. This is a great setting for down-and-dirty rock ’n’ roll tones. Mode 2 is a wide-open op-amp clean boost. This setting dispenses with the soft-clipping diodes altogether, leaving you with a straight op-amp drive that’s perfect for pushing your clean amp into restrained breakup. Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement that produces a familiar-sounding drive, but with more clarity and transparency. Plumes covers a lot of ground in a lot of situations, but when we ran it through its paces here at Sweetwater, we found that it works its best magic in front of a dirty amp.

A Tone knob that sounds great at any setting

On many overdrive pedals, only about 25% of the Tone knob’s range is usable. The rest produces either mud or ear-piercing high mids. Plumes takes this into account. Its fine-tuned Tone control is useful throughout its entire range. It’s as if EarthQuaker Devices took the usable portion of the Tone knob on a typical overdrive and spread it over Plumes’ entire range. All the way counterclockwise, Plumes’ Tone control delivers clear, punchy lows without becoming boomy or muddy. All the way clockwise, the Tone knob adds brightness and clarity without shredding your ears.

EarthQuaker Devices Plumes Features:

  • Makes a dirty amp sing with well-sculpted lows, focused mids, and ultra-clear highs
  • Symmetrical LED clipping mode injects grind into your playing
  • Wide-open op-amp clean boost pushes a clean amp into restrained breakup

Reviews

Great for Bass and Boosting Drive Pedals
I am an Earthquaker fan after buying the Plumes and Blumes together. Both are versatile, sound great, look snappy and feel very solidly constructed.

Blending them together via an OBNE Signal Blender can produce results that are far from subtle. Crank the gain on both, turn the tone down on the Blumes and up on the Plumes and you get crunchy, thick doom metal tones. The Blumes can even attain a saw-like fuzz sound on the right settings.

I mostly use the Plumes in mode 3 as a boost in front of a Wampler Plexi Drive, which took awhile to dial in, but has yielded my favorite distortion sound yet - it's open and earthy but extreme enough to chug like a champ.

Shout-out to my rep Andy Eason, who always checks in to make sure I'm happy and I have what I need.

Works- probably the best screamer out there
I bought this pedal and did a video review on YouTube. This pedal sounds great and is versatile. I don't like the switch but everything else is spot on and exact. It's a great pedal and a keeper.

All time great OD!
This is my second Plumes and I usually have one on my main board. I use it for low-mid gain tone enhancement and stacking with other pedals to build higher gain sounds. It plays nicely with other ODs and distortion pedals and is great used by itself (probably not my go to for higher gain stuff unless stacked). I have several tube screamer variations, but this is so much more useful than most of them due to the different clipping modes and more importantly, the expanded tone range - you can dial out that normal screamer muddiness that limits the others to a one trick pony sound. I always recommend this pedal to people looking for a first or second drive pedal, even if they aren't looking for TS style pedals. I would buy this even if it cost more, but luckily it's so reasonably priced!
Replaces a tubescreamer (and more)
This pedal has been far more useful than the Ibanez TS9 that I'd been using. The modes alone open up a much more useful range and well, as a graphic designer, this is a great design and color scheme. I was so impressed with the value that I bought a blumes for my bass. EQD really made their mark with this.

IMPECCABLE DRIVE
I love EQD and this pedal has outstanding build quality. Stacks incredibly well with other pedals. I also love Sweetwater and this exclusive color combination. Pedal looks gorgeous and sounds even better!
