The Phonos offers support for both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, selectable using the MM/MC switch and complemented by selectable Capacitance and Impedance. The 3-way Gain switch makes achieving the perfect level easy, while the Subsonic switch makes short work of attenuating any unwanted low-frequency crackle. Finally, the Phonos showcases premium gold-plated RCA connectors, and you get a versatile Audio Ground connection.
VOLTAiR 120V technology: the foundation of the sound
Every aspect of the Phonos’s performance traces back to SPL’s VOLTAiR 120V technology, the audio circuitry behind the company's flagship Professional Fidelity series. While most audio components run at an internal voltage of plus-or-minus 15 volts, VOLTAiR runs at plus-or-minus 60 volts. That extra headroom translates to a maximum input level of 32.5dBu, a full 12dB above the industry standard, keeping every component well within its optimal range no matter how demanding the source. The result is greater dynamic range, an exceptional signal-to-noise ratio, and the effortlessly relaxed sound character SPL is known for. Powered by SPL’s proprietary 120V SUPRA operational amplifiers and a shielded toroidal transformer in a fully linear power supply, the Phonos reaches a level of analog performance that simply isn’t possible at conventional operating voltages.
