Bring Me the Surfcaster: Lee Malia’s Signature 6-string Arrives

Since the band’s 2004 founding, Lee Malia has been Bring Me The Horizon’s lead axe man, adding rhythm duties to his repertoire of riffage more than a decade ago, with the band transcending myriad shades of rock, metal, hardcore, alternative, and electronic styles. Suffice it to say that Malia’s mélange of musicality requires an equally flexible yet focused instrument, and with his Pro Series Signature Lee Malia LM-87, Jackson rose to the occasion. Lee’s signature LM-87 is a voltaic and versatile take on Jackson’s Surfcaster shape, which has become a mainstay among Sweetwater’s harder-rocking guitarists who crave the eye-catching aesthetics and comfortable playability of the iconic offset style without sacrificing the aural architecture needed for all-night sonic haymakers. Outfitted with okoume and amaranth, a graphite-reinforced 3-piece neck, and electrifying Jackson-crafted coil-splittable pickups, the Pro Series Signature Lee Malia LM-87 is raring to rip, showing you that This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For.

The ”Throne” of pliable performances

If Lee Malia’s work across Bring Me The Horizon’s multi-decade oeuvre could be described in a word, it’s diverse. Dynamic style and expansive playing abound, and the foundation of Lee’s Pro Series Signature LM-87 required the power and pliability needed to support this caliber of versatility, leading to a dyad of okoume and amaranth. As a tonewood, okoume is renowned for its maple-like profile, keeping tones crisp, warm, and bright throughout the spectrum, with excellent articulation that ensures every note rings with clarity, from chords and breakdowns to leads and solos. Amaranth is revered for its projection, sustain, and organic headroom, emphasizing power and precision via tight basses, punchy mids, and sonorous trebles that collectively endow your sound with a shimmering crystalline character, high in presence and definition.

An ”Avalanche” of sonic firepower

To bring the LM-87’s foundational firepower to life, Lee Malia’s 6-string features a dynamic dyad of custom-wound, Jackson-designed signature pickups: an LM-87 humbucker and an LM-87 P-90. The bridge-mounted LM-87 channels serious heat, taking passive-design pickups to their outer reaches, but without compromising headroom or sonic preservation, even as you crank up the gain. In the neck, you’ve got the LM-87 P-90 — an electrifying take on the time-honored tone that balances vintage flair with modern malleability. What’s more, the axe’s sound-shaping suite adds a push-pull coil split to the Volume control, joining the 3-way selector and Master Tone knob for detailed tone-crafting capabilities that are always on tap.

Serious Sempiternal sustain and stability

When you’ve been handling lead and rhythm parts for more than 10 years, the importance of tactility cannot be overstated. And this goes double for any instrument capable of road warrior-worthy use. Fortunately, Lee and Jackson are no strangers to these conditions, and it shows through every appointment of the signature Pro Series LM-87. Its 3-piece neck is reinforced with robust graphite rods. The 3-piece construction enriches the harmonic prism of the okoume while mitigating the risks of twisting or warping that are common to frequent changes in environmental conditions with 1-piece necks. The graphite reinforcement rods not only bolster this stability, but also significantly reduce weight, making neck-dive a thing of the past and lightening the load on your fretting hand’s shoulder. Speaking of fretwork, this searing Surfcaster boasts a compound 12–16-inch radius fretboard, topping a D-profile neck that balances speed and in-hand heft to provide preeminent playability that suits low-end brutality and high-flashpoint solos in equal measure. On the sonic-security front, Jackson spares no effort to keep your sound in place, thanks to the Jackson die-cast locking tuners, TOM-style bridge, and anchored tailpiece, equipping the latter with a set of fine-tuners for ultra-precise control.

Jackson Pro Series Signature Lee Malia LM-87 Features:

  • Debut signature 6-string for Bring Me The Horizon rhythm/lead guitarist Lee Malia
  • Okoume body and neck anchor tones in maple-like warmth, with full-spectrum clarity and brightness to make your sound shine
  • Amaranth fretboard supplies high projection, enduring sustain, and punchy precision in every register
  • Signature Jackson-designed, custom-wound pickups include a neck-mounted P-90 and bridge-mounted humbucker for an out-of-time mix of vintage and heavy-hitting sonics
  • Sound-shaping controls include 3-way toggle, Master Volume, and Master Tone, with a push-pull coil split to unlock myriad dimensions of striking sonics
  • 3-piece neck enriches harmonic complexity and increases resilience to twisting and warping
  • Graphite reinforcement in the neck reduces weight, maximizes stability, and mitigates pesky neck-diving for ideal tour-grade performance
  • 25.5-in. scale hosts 22 jumbo frets to balance playability across tuning and string-gauge configurations, from light and bright to down-tuned and diabolical
  • Fretboard’s compound 12–16-in. radius deftly accommodates chords, riffs, leads, and solos with equal power and precision
  • D-shaped neck profile blends speed, comfort, and accuracy to accommodate players of virtually any style
  • TOM-style bridge and fine tuner-equipped tailpiece ensure reliable intonation and singing buzz-free sounds
  • Locking Jackson die-cast tuners supply unwavering sonic stability

Reviews

More than I expected!

When I saw this guitar on the website, I was intrigued. I did my homework and figured I would take a chance and get it. More than exceeded my expectations! The neck is butter and the pickups are aggressive! A retro beast with a metal heart! Michael Berry was awesome!

Fantastic Guitar
The pickups in this are fantastic. All the sounds are usable and this just made me an offset guy.
Punches far above its price

Don't let where it's made or the price fool you, I was genuinely shocked when I took this thing out of the gig bag. The craftsmanship is fantastic. Everything from the finish, the binding, it was all executed great. The only thing I could find, and I'm not exaggerating, is a very minor scratch/tool mark on the fretboard that is extremely hard to see until you're looking for it. The build quality overall is fantastic and is easily on par with guitars much more expensive than this.

I did opt for the plek/tusq nut install so I can't speak on the factory nut or fretwork but that is something I do to most guitars I purchase for peace of mind. If you can swing it, it's well worth it. The result is an incredible playing guitar with low action, minimal buzz, and great tuning stability. I had it setup in drop b with 12-60's and it plays like butter. The techs at Sweetwater always do an awesome job with these upgrades and this guitar is no exception.

As far as the guitar itself goes, the pickups sound very good. I don't have any plans on swapping them out. The bridge humbucker is a little lower output compared to most metal style pickups, but this allows you to crank the gain on your amp, or amp sim, and when you do, it comes to life. It's aggressive and clear but super smooth and has great pick attack. It cleans up well and sounds great split. The P90 in the neck is equally awesome. It sounds great for cleans by itself or when paired with the split bridge. It also rips on a crunch setting with some gain.

The finish on this guitar is unlike any I've personally owned. It's a semi-gloss, satin kind of finish. You can definitely tell it's thin and made to wear quick which I'm looking forward to. I was a little worried because I avoid gloss necks like the plague but it almost feels like a satin finish and doesn't get sticky for me personally. It isn't quite as smooth as an oiled neck or an actual satin neck but I have 0 issues. The bridge is very interesting. It's a normal TOM style bridge but the stop piece has little fine tuners on it. They feel solid and work as advertised. It also fits in with the unique vibe of the guitar. I don't personally use them much but I could see why they'd be nice for playing live as they're more precise than the actual tuners. I was worried the bridge would have a ton of noise when used with gain, but so far I have not experienced that at all. If you like TOM bridges, this will feel at home. If you were unsure like me as a hipshot bridge fan, it's a great bridge. It's comfortable, intonates well even with thicker strings/low tunings, and is easy to adjust.

The neck is a dream to play. The profile is a comfortable C shape that is on the thinner side but not like, Ibanez thin. The 12-16" fretboard radius is great as well. Ive never played an amaranth fretboard before but it seems like a nice cross between ebony or rosewood. It's super smooth and looks really cool, especially if you choose one with a nice streaky grain pattern. The locking tuners work perfect and should be the standard in this day and age.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the 3-way switch on mine can occasionally be a little finicky. It is something I will upgrade eventually but for now it works fine 90 percent of the time. The gig bag Jackson includes on the pro and pro plus guitars is underwhelming as well. It doesn't really protect the guitar much and is really just a "bag" for transporting it around. If you tour or travel a lot, you'll want to upgrade for sure. But at the end of the day, it's included while some guitars well over this price point don't include anything so I can't complain too, too much. It also would've been nice to have stainless steel frets versus the nickel frets but that's nitpicking at this point. You can tell in SW's pictures they're coming from the factory polished nice and mirror-like and are super smooth to play.

Overall, this is a lot of guitar for the price. It seems to be the general consensus that this guitar punches far above its price point, especially if you get an open box model or a good deal on it like I did (shout out Chris!) and considering there's nothing really like it out there unless you go custom. I'd wholeheartedly agree. Sure, there's some cost cutting going on like no luminlay side dots, ss frets, etc. but none of that matters when you get this thing in your hands. It's inspiring to play, it looks great, it feels great, it's a home run. Every time I pick it up, a new riff comes out. It's under $ which nowadays, is becoming more and more rare for a guitar like this. If you're on the fence at all, do it. You won't regret it!

Surprised there are currently no reviews, so, here is my honest one.

Let's start with Amaranth being used for the fretboard, can't tell a difference between Rosewood nor my ebony ones. Amaranth is also called purpleheart (used in a lot of higher end guitar necks - IE: 5 piece necks) On to the body wood. Okoume, it gives you that warm rich tone of mahogany, without the weight. This guitar is 7lbs. On to the pickups, I like what was done here. P90 in the neck for a more traditional 'old school' sound for cleans (P90's started it all), but still sounds good going through a high gain amp distorted. The bridge pickup sounds very similar to a Bareknuckles to me anyway. The guitar has great overall sound and has a split coil which is nice and I'll explain why. Great for a snappy smooth clean tone, but also great if you are tuning this low as I have to get you a Djent sound, Lee's sound, even Spiritbox or Orbit Culture sound depending on what you are running it through. This is what I was wanting this specific guitar for so it's suiting me well for that. It's definitely a fingerprint magnet which I fully expected. As and extra note: I love having the ability to fine tune with the fine tuners just like you would on a Floyd. All in all I'm pleased. It has your typical fast Jackson profile neck. I did have the nut replaced before having it shipped. I do not like plastic nuts especially when you are running really heavy gauged strings. I had a graph tech nut installed and it was worth every penny in my book. This is why I gave it 4.5 stars, it should have already come with a graphite nut IMHO because Jackson knows the audience for this and they are going to use heavy gauged strings and tuning low. If you are running in low tunings on this, then I highly suggest you go get a set of Jimmy Clips. One for above the nut and one for down by the bridge, you are going to need it. Trust me. A Fret Wrap did nothing for this guitar. I.

Music background: 45 years of playing and owning MIA, MIJ, MIM, MII, MIK and even Framus Custom Masterbuilt, now I'll add MIC. I guess from every single region at this point.
