Aggressive Tone, Custom Looks

If you're like us at Sweetwater, you look back on the Superstrat movement of the ’80s with a certain fondness. Inspired by the Superstrats of years past, the Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR M is a bonafide shredder. It's got the Southern California look, screaming Seymour Duncan pickups, and a silky-smooth compound radius fingerboard. The So-Cal has a genuine Floyd Rose 1000 Series tremolo that can handle the craziest dive-bombs without destroying your tuning stability, and you'll be impressed by the comfortable contours and blazing fast feeling of the neck. If you're in the market for a Superstrat that you can pull right off the shelf, the Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR M is your first choice.

Your hands will fly over the compound radius fingerboard

The Superstrat craze of the 1980s inspired guitarists all over the country to Frankenstein their beloved axes with faster necks, hotter pickups, aftermarket hardware, and bold custom paint jobs. Decades later, the Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR carries on this tradition. It has a blazing-fast maple neck with graphite reinforcement rods to resist bowing over time. At the nut, the fretboard is a rounded 12 inches. As you move up the neck, the maple fingerboard flattens out to a radius of 16 inches. This compound radius construction makes it easy for you to fret chords one minute, and rip solos in the upper register the next.

Seymour Duncan humbuckers deliver hot-rodded tone

For most players, tone is everything — especially when you're buying a stock Superstrat. That's why Charvel loaded this axe with a pair of Seymour Duncan TB-6 and SH-6N Distortion pickups. For extra tonal variation, both humbuckers are equipped with coil-splitting abilities to give you a total of 6 humbucker/single-coil tones from brutal crunch to shrieking leads. The Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR M is equipped with knurled speed knobs that resist sweat slippage.

Floyd Rose 1000 Series tremolo adds extra texture to chords and leads

The Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR M makes it easy to unlock even more creative potential. It's equipped with a dependable Floyd Rose 1000 series locking tremolo bridge. It can be used for subtle vibrato to full-blown dive bombs with the same response and tuning stability that you'd expect from a Floyd Rose. Whether you use it or abuse it, you'll have trouble knocking the Floyd Rose tremolo bridge out of tune.

Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Contoured Alder body shows off an undeniable California vibe
  • Compound-radius fretboard (12"–16") gets flatter and wider up high
  • Seymour Duncan TB-6 and SH-6N Distortion pickups deliver hot-rodded tones
  • 6-way pickup switching system produces brutal humbucker and sweet single-coil tones
  • Push-pull coil tap unlocks sweet California twang
  • No-load tone pot won't color sound when run wide open
  • Knurled speed knobs resist sweat slippage
  • Floyd Rose double-locking tremolo squeals and dives without wrecking your tuning
  • Die-cast matching tuning machines

Awesome guitar

This was a guitar I had to settle for due to unavailability of other guitars that I had on my radar. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised.

Pro's:
- I play through the Ax-2 and the cleans and lead tones sound amazing. The neck is fast and thin and this is a great shred guitar if you are looking for one. Tone sounds like the rock bands of the 80's.
- I was not sure of the guitar color browsing online, but when I opened the packaging, I was surprised by how fresh and pleasant the guitar looked. It is a very light yellow and I personally feel I made a good decision choosing this over the snow white model.
- I dive bombed this and the guitar has no problem staying in tune
- The pick ups are hot. The neck Humbucker sounds warm and stratty. The bridge pick has a good balance or warmth and fatness, with good highs and mids that have cut through the mix quite well.
- Guitar overall looks well made.

Con's:
- The action seems higher than I would have liked. I will need to get some work done to make legato playing more fluid.
- The Tuners could have looked better. This though is not influential in how the guitar sounds.

Overall I am happy with the purchase and would recommend the guitar
Music background: Playing for 26 years - play on the church worship team - heavily influenced by rock bands both Christian and secular from the 70’s and 80’s

Great rock guitar but can cover a lot more..

The 5 rating is because for the money this is a really good guitar.
Mines not too heavy which I like. The coil split sounds great and gives some strat spank. For just 3 positions on the blade, lots of usable tones (six) love the coil split, the neck p/u sounds fabulous.
This guitar is warm sounding, not bright, but not too warm...it's thick and it sounds similar volume knob up or down. Pickups are hot!
I have several older strats that I've thrown Dimarzio SD's in the bridge to be versatile for hard rock. The SD is brighter.
The neck is outstanding, very fast playing, comfortable and on the flatter side compared to a strat, which makes it very fast playing.
Needed intonation and a slight neck/trem spring height adjustment which I was able to do.
For the money this is a great guitar. The color looks like light butter yellow...it's nice actually. I've had some old strats thet get almost this yellow with time.
Glad I bought it...fun! It will get lots of use.

Great. Great. Great

I've never purchased a guitar without playing it first and I am so happy I chose this one to be my first. Everything from the quality of finish, construction and sound are amazing. I have a Pro-mod dk24 and this one is by far my favorite of the two. The Duncan distortions sound great. I play mostly metal and rock but you can get just about any sound you want. It's a super versatile gutar. The only draw back I had was that the action had to be fooled with a bit to get it to my liking. No big deal though.

One of the best

I waited about a month after buying this guitar in order to play it enough to give a fair review. In the time I've had it, I've played a few different genre of music (mostly metal and surprisingly enough jazz) and it out-performs most any guitar I've played in the past. The pick-ups are quite a bit hotter than the San Dimas (which has 59/JB as pick-ups vs the Distortion pick-ups in this) and can pull off some insane high gain sounds. But, in trying to find a jazz tone, it is possible to roll off the tone and volume on the neck pick-up and find an above-average sound.

The neck itself is probably my favorite thing about the guitar. Everyone knows that a guitar's neck can make or break it, and this neck makes this guitar my all-day, solo workhorse guitar. I have a nice collection of guitars, but I keep picking up this Charvel. The compound radius isn't immediately noticeable, but when switching to another guitar it is sorely missed. From playing jazz chords to sweeping arpeggios, the neck just makes me feel like a better player than I actually am.

The fit and finish of the guitar is impeccable and the floyd rose is no-nonsense but great.

As an aside, I did have the Sweetwater Plek service done to mine (which I cannot recommend enough, give you can spare the money), so that may influence my experience compared to the stock set-up/neck. Sweetwater set my action just how I wanted, leveled and rounded the frets, and put my favorite strings on.

The only other change I decided to make was to install some D'addario strap locks.

If you're in the market for an extremely comfortable, easy-playing, versatile instrument, then buy this guitar.
