Versatile Dynamic Mic with High Default Gain

If you’ve ever been frustrated by not having enough gain for a dynamic mic — but didn’t want to drop the money for a cloud lifter — then the Audix PDX720 hypercardioid dynamic vocal microphone is right up your alley. This dynamic mic has a high default standard gain level, enabling it to easily capture quieter sound sources like spoken word performances — all without the need for a cloud lifter or preamp gain boosts. Plus, its robust 135dB max SPL handling makes it a great choice for drums or other loud sources. The Audix PDX720 has a hypercardioid polar pattern with excellent off-axis rejection, and it also features two unique 3-position switches that allow you to shape the mic’s overall sound very quickly without reaching for an EQ unit. In summary, Sweetwater studio engineers think the Audix PDX720 is a versatile mic that sounds great on just about anything!

Shape your sound from the mic itself

The Audix PDX720 hypercardioid dynamic vocal microphone has two 3-position switches that help you sculpt the mic’s sound. The highpass filter switch has settings at 120Hz and 155Hz, and the Presence Boost switch has bumps of 1.5dB or 3dB. With both switches off, vocals have a silky-smooth top end, and the mic’s 50Hz–20kHz frequency response enables ample low end without sounding thunderous. These features mean that the Audix PDX720 can capture amazing audio from a variety of sound sources.

Audix: innovation, craftsmanship, and passion

Moreover, its R&D team and manufacturing facility in Oregon ensure quality at every stage of every product. Audix’s passion for producing and capturing pristine audio is a big reason many of us here at Sweetwater use the company’s products in our own homes and studios.

Great multi-use + Guitar cab secret weapon
I first encountered the PDX watching an 'in-studio' video/doc for the most recent BTBAM album. They were using the PDX for their heavy vocals, and I was immediately curious given the mic's styling. After looking (and seeing the original price), I was interested but not sold. When it went to its current (12/25) sale price (and having done online homework), it was and is a no-brainer.
Fast forward to having had it for a few weeks, weeks in which I am finishing tracking for a 10 song LP…. this thing is fantastic! It's a very capable vocal mic, the filters are super useful. It obviously looks great and the build quality i top notch by all appearances. (metal construction, very solid switches etc).
Where it has unexpectedly shined is in the guitar dept. This is the best dynamic mic I've used on a guitar cab in a long time. A/B against 57, 906, 100i etc.. and it keeps winning. It has more body, is 'smoother', and doesn't get harsh like some of the above. I generally haven't used the onboard filters for this use case, but certainly the built in HP could come in handy. This baby is a real secret weapon for guitar recording, so far primarily used with Greenbacks and V30s.
As advertised, it doesn't require as much gain to get strong signal for vocals; its output sounds full, takes compression well, and blends nicely with other vocals tracked with condensers etc.
In short, I would absolutely buy it again. If it were JUST for vocals (knowing what I do now), I would still buy it (but likely on sale or used (relative to 'full' price)). However, having used it on heavy/distorted guitars… I'm quickly moving towards 'indispensable' and would pay full freight to get these easy heavier guitar tones. I'm very much looking forward to trying it on more sources in the near future. Get it while it's still (currently) affordable!

better than the Shure ewuivalent

I am very happy I did. This is a fantastic mic all around and I love recording with it. It has good off axis rejection and semi functions as a shotgun style mic

Great Vocal Mic
Really great sounding mic for tenor and alto vocals. I've heard that it's prone to plosives but I'm using it without a pop filter at about an inch away for proximity effect and haven't had an issue with pops. I also like the Sm7b as a vocal mic while I'm playing piano, because of it's controlled proximity effect where I can anchor off of it with my face while moving around the keyboard so I don't accidentally sing too far from it. This is a strategy and a lot of piano players use, but it takes a mic that doesn't sound bad up close. Both this mic and the sm7b fit the bill but this runs a lot hotter than the sm7b which makes it usable with out a lot of gain on your preamp or a cloudlifter.
I'm happy with it

I've bought probably 30-40 mics. and let's just say it's a massive upgrade. the different filters and boosts it provides, it's a very capable and great mic!

Remember, not all mics do everything or everything well, they at least have one use, but this one does quite a bit!

Fantastic Mic!

I'm very happy I did. I have yet to do a proper vocal session but I've tracked mandolin, acoustic guitar and tin whistles with it and I love the smoothness of the top end, especially on wind instruments that can get shrill. Plus, it looks cool!

Thd PDX720 is a very versitle dynamic I am looking forward to getting to know it better. I have a bunch of sessions coming up after the New Year and it'll get a workout, I'm susre.

At the sale price of $ I would recommend it but at the usual price of $ I would have a hard time justifying the expense.

Getting the most for the money isn't just a big deal for our customers, it's also what the artists and engineers at Sweetwater look for when we're shopping for our own gear. That's why we're such fans of Audix microphones. Early on, we discovered must-have Audix mics such as the handheld OM2, the tight and punchy D6 kick mic, and the super-versatile i5. You'll also find Audix specialty hardware like CabGrabbers and D-Vice mic holders in our studios and live rigs. Their drum mic bundles offer amazing value, while our house of worship customers love their MicroBoom line for miking choirs. No matter the application, Sweetwater is happy to recommend the right Audix gear for your needs.
