The American Professional II P Bass: Upgrading Perfection

Leo Fender nailed the essence of a great instrument when he launched his Precision Bass in 1951. Today, the Fender American Professional II Precision Bass draws on over six decades of innovation, evolution, and inspiration to exceed the requirements of today’s working bassists. The ’63 C-profile neck feels just right, with its smooth, rolled fingerboard edges, “Super-Natural” satin finish, and newly sculpted neck heel that gives you effortless access to the upper register. Fender’s new V-Mod II Precision Bass split-coil pickup serves up classic P Bass punch and growl, with more articulation than ever before. A genuine bone nut and string-through-body or top-load 4-saddle HiMass Vintage bridge deliver solidity and sustain for authoritative tone, while lightweight vintage-style tuners with tapered shafts provide outstanding tuning stability and fast, hassle-free string changes. Rocking premium appointments, flawless playability, optimized electronics, and classic visuals, the Fender American Professional II Precision Bass offers you a new standard of comfort, tone, and performance.

Session king

The Fender American Professional II Precision Bass carries on the tradition of the first mass-production electric bass guitar. The Precision has driven the bass lines of some of the biggest hit records ever made. The ’60s were a typically prolific decade, with the instrument in the capable hands of session bassists like LA Wrecking Crew stalwart Carol Kaye, who lent her Precision chops to countless iconic recordings such as the Beach Boys’ “California Girls” and “Good Vibrations.” Then there was Motown bass legend James Jamerson, whose ’62 Precision (dubbed “the Funk Machine”) delivered the infectious bounce that buoyed a slew of Motown hits like the Temptations’ “My Girl” and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” In fact, the Precision Bass was standard issue for Motown recordings. After bassist Bob Babbitt auditioned for a slot in Motown’s in-house studio rhythm section (the Funk Brothers), he was told his playing made the cut, but was instructed to “get a Precision” before returning for his first session. He did, and remained a P Bass player for the rest of his career.

The industry standard

Producers and engineers know that the Precision Bass always sits perfectly in the track, with minimal processing and the ideal amount of punch and growl. It’s the de facto industry standard. Perhaps that’s why many of today’s first-call bassists who had been playing exotic active instruments, such as LA session ace Sean Hurley (John Mayer, Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette, Robin Thicke), have come home to the Precision. Precision players often cite how “balanced” their instrument feels, whether they’re playing seated or standing; indeed, the P Bass is a supremely balanced instrument, from its playing feel to its fat, punchy, authoritative tone. The instantly recognizable P Bass sound is the end product of a number of factors, including scale length, tonewoods, its bolt-on neck, and of course, Fender’s one-of-a-kind Precision Bass split-coil pickup — the latest, state-of-the-art update of which comes standard on the American Professional II Precision Bass.

V-Mod II Precision Bass split-coil pickup

The Precision Bass split-coil pickup bucks the hum, but it’s technically two single-coil pickups working in tandem, so it has the note definition and harmonic richness many humbucking bass pickups lack. It’s placed in an optimal position along the string length to capture and deliver girthy low end along with midrange growl that cuts through thick arrangements. And it also makes a great thumb rest! The American Professional II Precision Bass features Fender’s latest upgrade to their venerable split-coil bass pickup. The V-Mod II Precision Bass pickup delivers greater note articulation than previous versions, while serving up the epic punch and growl the P Bass is famous for. The V-Mod II P Bass pickup brings out the rich harmonic overtones that enhance the expressive nuances in your playing, while maintaining the solid fundamental that makes the P Bass perform admirably cross-genre, onstage and in the studio. Bass players at Sweetwater are blown away by the flawless playability and amazing tone of the American Professional II Precision Bass and its V-Mod II pickup. Trust us: you will be, too.

Reviews

My favorite Fender bass!
I have a MIJ Geddy Lee jazz bass that I have loved for years. Then I got a MIM JMJ Mustang bass and really appreciated the lighter weight and short scale. Then I got this USA pbass and it's the best! The neck is smooth and not too chunky, the pick up is louder and cuts through more than my other basses, the weight is light, and it looks great. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the bridge. I like a low action and the tiny screws on the saddles stick up and scratch the side of my hand sometimes, but that could be how I play when using a pick. Playing this p bass with an Aguilar tone hammer 500 and two 1x12 cabs gives me the tone I want and makes me want to play more.
Music background: Hobbyist
Best Fender Precision

The neck is so good. Finish absolutely no stickiness, I was apprehensive about the "narrow tall" frets. It is so playable! Can do slides and trills legato, etc. so much better than with the fat frets. I have a '74 jazz bass, love it, but this American Professional 2 plays better. I spent the $ on pro setup and the action , intonation and neck relief are spot on.

The pickups have that Precision bass sound , are very clear and the tone control really is progressive, doesn't just start to sound thumps as soon as you roll a little off. You can put it in the middle and get the fat low and middle with still some cut through highs not harsh or muffled.

The fit and finish is the best, got the dark knight.

Have been playing since 1978, had a lot of basses.

Definitely recommend!

Music background: Have played in gigging cover and original bands, recording, home studio, demos etc. play mostly classic rock , metal , blues, jazz.
An awesome experience
I was able to go to Sweetwater and was given a private studio to try many different basses with no pressure. I chose the Fender Precision Bass and couldn't be happier. It plays and sounds amazing. Thanks to Sweetwater for a great experience.
Music background: Played guitar for 40+ years and now moving toward playing bass more
IT'S LEGIT
My daughter is a budding bassist and she has been looking for her "Forever Bass". While she has had a lot of success with her little Squier Bronco Bass, it was time to move up to another level. She has already enjoyed this bass immensely and it has fueled her love for playing. The bass is well-balanced, extremely comfortable and sits well in a variety of mixes in a variety of situations.

The only reason for taking away a 1/2 star is that the tone knob doesn't have the traditional "mid-point" that you can feel click into place when it is turned to half-way. On the fly, it makes it a little more difficult to quickly have a frame of reference for tone. Ultimately, she is able to use her ear to dial in what she wants, but having the midpoint that you can actually feel with your hand, would make it a 5-Star bass. I am sure she will love this one forever!

Bottom line: if you want a simple yet fantastic bass, this is the one to get. The reverse fade for the Dark Night is amazing as well.
Music background: I've been playing music for over thirty years. As of now I no longer play in secular bands, but in a worship band that travels to different churches.
A Lovely Low-End
The Fender American Professional II Precision Bass is an elegant epitome of a proper low-end laying machine. Truth be told, I come from the land of the Jazz Bass. With the Precision Bass, the simplicity of the single split-coil pickup and dual knob design exemplifies an instance of less being more. The no-frills approach to implementation brought forth an instrument that makes me play better, not just sound better. Without the bells-and-whistle of two pickups and accompanying volume and tone controls of a Jazz Bass, I am left to concentrate on what I am playing – the bass line.

I find that the Precision Bass is suited to sitting in the pocket nicely and holding down the low-end whilst its' Jazz Bass brethren can pull double-duty and serve as a lead instrument due to its' tonal variety and skinnier neck profile. Speaking of necks, the Fender American Professional II series guitars and basses have hand-rolled fingerboard edges that serve to make fretting more comfortable – and the result is immaculate. Silky slides, buttery bends, vigorous vibratos and comfortable chords all drip from my fingers, effortlessly, thanks to the innovations used on the necks in this Fender series.

The V-Mod II pick-up is just that – a vintage-modified design that brings the best of yester-year into today's focus. The V-Mod II is amazingly accurate and articulate in its' reproduction of notes played. Crisp upper-registers and tight low-end are easily found when getting down with this bass.

I am not a J-to-P Bass convert, but I can genuinely appreciate the qualities and capabilities my new Precision Bass brings to my repertoire.
