The Yamaha Pacifica Takes Center Stage

Yamaha’s Pacifica solidbody electric guitars, introduced in 1990, gained instant worldwide popularity thanks to their outstanding quality and value. Indeed, with the Pacifica’s smooth playability and sonic versatility, it didn’t take long for it to become a stalwart on the LA session scene. Now, Sweetwater is excited to present Yamaha’s high-end line of Pacificas designed by Yamaha Japan in partnership with Yamaha Artist Services in Hollywood. Featuring lightweight, resonant chambered bodies, top-shelf hardware, and powerful pickups developed by Rupert Neve Designs, these guitars raise the bar for performance and sound while retaining the series’ renowned affordability. Spec’d with Rupert Neve Reflectone pickups in an HSS configuration, the professional-grade Yamaha PACP12 Pacifica serves up the fat, snarling lead tones and shimmering cleans evocative of coveted vintage humbuckers and single-coils.

Reflectone pickups: unrivaled sonic performance

Leveraging decades of engineering expertise and deep research into what makes prized vintage pickups sound the way they do, Rupert Neve Designs Reflectone pickups represent the state of the art in guitar pickup design. With their strong low frequencies, sparkling highs, and remarkable dynamic sensitivity, Reflectone pickups capture every expressive nuance in your playing and deliver it to your audience with crystal clarity. Incorporating windings with a meticulously controlled gap between wires, Reflectones feature a bright and effervescent top end. The front and back sides of each pickup are magnetized with a specified flux density to produce a clearer, louder, and more articulate sound with an optimal balance of saturation and output gain. Scrupulous attention is paid to quality control, with critical factors such as coil wire tension, magnetization strength, and peak frequency levels strictly managed for unit-to-unit consistency during mass production. The bottom line? Your Yamaha PACP12 Pacifica delivers sonic performance unmatched by any other electric guitar.

About Rupert Neve Designs

For guitarists unfamiliar with the brand, Rupert Neve Designs is the company founded by legendary console designer Rupert Neve. His 80 Series consoles had a huge, punchy, and authoritative sound that defined ’70s rock. From London to New York to Los Angeles and beyond, top studios installed Neve boards as fast as they could. By 1977, with the introduction of the NECAM automation system, Neve consoles were the main component of the success formula for any recording studio with world-class aspirations. Today, Rupert Neve Designs continues to advance with cutting-edge products that sound incredible and intelligently address the challenges of the digital age. RND’s collaboration with Yamaha on the Reflectone pickups is a game-changer. While the merits of various pickup designs have traditionally been a bone of contention among discerning electric guitarists, Reflectone single-coil, humbucking, and P-90 pickups put that debate to rest.

Premium materials for a superior guitar

Premium tonewoods and hardware are used throughout the Yamaha PACP12 Pacifica. The sleekly contoured alder body is strategically chambered for lighter weight and enhanced resonance, making it one of the most comfortable solidbody electric guitars we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. Combined with a compound-radius fretboard, the profile of the bolt-on maple neck — a Pacifica hallmark — facilitates speedy navigation across all registers. A top-quality Gotoh vibrato bridge/tailpiece, a TUSQ nut, and Gotoh locking tuners ensure your Pacifica remains in tune during marathon sets, even with vigorous use of the whammy bar. Precision-crafted by Yamaha luthiers in Japan, the PACP12 boasts robust build quality that will withstand years of rigorous professional touring. Finally, Yamaha Pacifica models are available in a selection of dazzling finishes with your choice of maple or rosewood fingerboards.

Reviews

Sounds, Feels, Plays and Looks Amazing
I've had mine for a little over a year. For comparison, I have several other guitars in this price point, including a Fender American Ultra II HSS Stratocaster which is a direct competitor to this guitar. In my humble opinion this guitar punches far above it's weight class: it's that good.

This guitar is just phenomenal. It is comfortable to play, looks amazing and the fit and finish is just superb.

There are 3 things that completely stand out to me on this guitar:

The Bridge: The bridge setup is perfect. The bridge doesn't fight you when you bend strings so it feels effortless to play and the bends are consistent with my other fixed bridge guitars. It also stays in tune. The whammy bar is also perfectly shaped putting it at the perfect height while picking. Also it's extremely easy to install and remove and adjust the tension.

The Fretboard: I LOVE the semi-satin finish on the fretboard. It is very smooth (not glossy or sticky), so again you can slide up and down the neck with ease. I really dislike the glossy/tacky/sticky feel of the Fender maple necks.

The Pickups: These are the real 'star of the show'. I'm constantly amazed at how good these pickups sound and how different (and usable) the voicings are in each pickup selector position. I think they are probably the best sounding single coil pickups that I have on any of my guitars (Fralins, Sunbear, Fender). They sound more 'straty' than the noiseless pickups on my real Stratocaster.

I would totally buy this guitar again and if I had to choose only one, I'd play this over the Fender any day of the week.
Super comfortable, easy playing, quality built guitar.
This is the second Pacifica Professional that I own, my first one that I purchased a few months earlier from Sweetwater has a rosewood fretboard. I was so impressed by the easy playing neck and superb feel, that I just had to get another one! These guitars have a sound of their own, very clear and clean sounding pickups. The majority of single-coil pickup guitars that I play are Fender Strats and Teles, which I find all have a personality of their own, some chimey, some gritty, some dark, and some bright, etc...The Pacifica has a very even, clear sound that needs to be manipulated a bit by your amp or pedals to get the sound that you are trying to achieve, and it does it very well. I can't express enough what a high quality feel this guitar has, and did I mention, it plays like butter! My other rosewood neck Pacifica now has a Seymour Duncan Lil' 59 pickup in the neck position, it sound great, I now have 2 awesome Pacificas to choose from to play for whatever mood I am in. Great guitar, no regrets, what a quality instrument.
Exceeding All Expectations - exceptional guitar
I've had it for 2 weeks and I discover new things to like about it every time I pick it up.

Basics:
- GREAT tone. Tons of versatility and the custom-designed pickups were not oversold. They are special. Coil-split works great and that neck pickup with the coil-split delivers some great SRV and Hendrix-style sounds. The humbucker sounds really good. I also play metal and if you're used to playing super high-gain active pickups, you'll want to use a boost pedal with the humbucker. But outside of that, it's got plenty of juice for non-metal players.
- Looks incredible. I live in a foggy beach town and it looks just like our sky in the morning. Looks like it belongs in a display, not on a stand.
- Stays in tune! I was worried with a whammy bar and no locking nut (though it does have locking tuners), but once the new strings were stretched out a bit, it stays in tune really well even as I hack my way through SRV and EVH bends.
- Hardware - all of the hardware and electronics are high quality. Locking tuners work great and look good. Push/pull and rotations on all knobs are super smooth. Exposed truss rod (between the fingerboard and neck pickup) will be convenient for future adjustments.
- Engineering/innovation - The chambered body sounds great and is noticeable lighter than my other guitars without sounding thin. Post-purchase, I found out it comes with a removable tremolo screw/stud so you can basically convert it from hardtail to whammy and back easily.
- Sweetwater service - My sales engineer was responsive as always from pre-order through follow-up service, and for some reason, mine was missing the aforementioned tremolo screw. I emailed my sales engineer, he routed it to service, and <48 hours later, a replacement is on the way.

Oh yeah. I don't love cases because I'm not a gigging musician and they take up space, but the all-black case with the gold hardware and Yamaha logo look great and don't cheapen the feel of this premium guitar.

I am falling in love with this thing fast and it will be my go-to guitar for anything bluesy going forward. ZERO complaints.
Music background: Serious amateur, home recording
Pearl White w/Tortoise pickguard, rosewood neck. Seems to play itself

Even for smaller hands this neck radius design feels incredible. From the Rubert Neve pickups , s s frets , and just the whole kit in total is ; to me ; just as good as any Tom Anderson or Suhr. (I know because I was looking at those as well). Even the Case is a work of art IMO. There is something to be said for the attention to detail of Japanese guitars, but Yamaha seems to have figured it all out with this HSS model. Quite happy with it, and it gets a lot of attention.

Not Bad
My Pacifica Professional arrived with some blatant craftsmanship issues, quite surprising for a $+ handmade Japanese guitar, much less one from Yamaha, famous for their quality control. The guitar was not remotely set up well at all (fret sprout, intonation issues, some bowing of the neck, etc).

In addition, the tuning stability, initially, was horrible. It was only after essentially decking the bridge and eschewing usage of the string trees that I was able to find solid and reliable stability.

Pickups are great, very hi-fi and clean, a bit bright, not great for high-gain but wonderful for general rock/clean/funk playing.

The neck is wonderful and smooth to play. I don't honestly notice the radius change in the fretboard, but I do find it quite comfortable to play chords and solo alike.
