Experience the Amazing NU1XA AvantGrand Upright

The Yamaha AvantGrand NU1XA transcends convention, blurring the line between acoustic and digital pianos. The NU1XA marries the supremely natural feel of genuine mechanical piano action with the incomparable sound of two legendary concert grands: Yamaha's own flagship CFX and the inimitable Bösendorfer Imperial; both vividly brought to life with advanced Yamaha technologies such as Grand Expression and Virtual Resonance Modeling. Play the NU1XA AvantGrand digital piano, and you won't believe you're not playing a full-sized acoustic grand. That's because Yamaha built true acoustic keyboard action into this elegant upright-style instrument, along with astonishingly authentic dimensional sound. The NU1XA also retains features you won't find on an acoustic grand, including onboard recording and computer connectivity. Savor an exquisite concert grand playing experience in a digital piano that fits your lifestyle: the Yamaha NU1XA.

Thrilling concert grand performance in an elegant upright cabinet

With the AvantGrand NU1XA, you can put the expressive sound of a grand piano in your home, school, or house of worship. Yamaha’s painstaking attention to detail results in an instrument that sounds like a true concert grand, thanks to the NU1XA’s powerful speaker sound system with upward-facing woofers and tweeters sporting a newly designed horn assembly. The drivers are strategically integrated into the chambered cabinet to create a rich, room-filling sonic experience that will inspire the player and thrill listeners as it expands and resonates throughout the performance space. Superb aesthetics are an intrinsic component of the instrument’s design, as evidenced by the beautiful upright piano cabinetry that will grace any room in your home.

Authentic sound and feel

The NU1XA features Yamaha’s Articulation Sensor System. Employing unique non-contact electromagnetic sensors and a sophisticated algorithm, this advanced system captures every intricate detail of your playing. With two sensors for each key — one for the hammer and the other for triggering key-off samples — even the most subtle nuances of expression are accurately reproduced. From delicate trills to repeated notes, the mechanism captures every subtle movement. In addition, the NU1XA’s keys are crafted of real wood to provide a natural, authentic response that furthers the illusion that you’re playing an acoustic piano.

The superb playability of a real piano action

AvantGrand pianos are very popular at Sweetwater — and for good reason. With the NU1XA, you benefit from Yamaha's next-generation AvantGrand hybrid piano technology, which seamlessly blends the company's industry-leading digital innovation with its century-plus legacy of world-class piano craftsmanship. Audaciously incorporating a physical acoustic upright piano action and GrandTouch pedal system that intuitively connect piano and pianist, the NU1XA delivers a rewardingly dynamic playing experience. The NU1XA's GrandTouch pedals employ a mechanism similar to that of a grand piano to re-create the subtle changes in resistance you feel when using an actual grand piano pedal. Plus, the NU1XA facilitates the same half-pedaling techniques that you would use with a grand piano, giving you fine control over sustain and reverberation.

Two world-class concert grands in one digital piano

Yamaha's NU1XA features two classic concert grands: Yamaha's own flagship CFX — selected and played by the winner of the 2010 International Chopin Piano Competition — and the revered Bösendorfer Imperial, the eight-octave behemoth from one of the world's oldest and most esteemed piano makers. Whether you prefer the bold, expansive voice of the CFX or the warm, rich Viennese tonality of the Imperial, switching between them is as simple as the press of a button. Characterized by their distinctive traits, including power, versatility, subtlety, and mellowness, both of these superb pianos are featured (by name) in the NU1XA. Tuned to perfection by experienced technicians and with each key meticulously sampled individually at multiple velocities, the truly NU1XA captures the unique tonal character of each of these peerless instruments.

Virtual Resonance Modeling delivers stunning acoustic realism

As Yamaha’s Grand Expression Modeling technology replicates the mechanics of a piano’s hammers, strings, and internal components, Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) re-creates the resonance of the piano strings and body as they respond in real time to the innumerable acoustic factors at play within an acoustic grand piano. Through headphones, concert hall performances are reproduced with breathtaking spatial dimensionality, courtesy of Yamaha’s 3D Binaural Sampling. And of course, your AvantGrand will never need tuning or registration!

3D Binaural Sampling for a richly immersive headphone experience

For the NU1XA, headphone connectivity isn’t just an add-on feature. Thanks to Yamaha’s advanced 3D Binaural Sampling, the CFX and Bösendorfer sounds you hear through your headphones are stunningly lifelike. Key to this technology are piano samples recorded by specialized microphones that capture locational information and other spacial details discernible by the human ear. The resulting sound is so enveloping and incredibly natural that you could well forget that you’re listening through headphones.

Generous connectivity

Behind its streamlined control panel, the Yamaha NU1XA offers an abundance of connectivity options for maximum functionality and integration with external devices. You can connect it to computers and mobile devices via USB and to recording systems via audio cables. USB Audio/MIDI connectivity lets you connect the piano to your Mac or PC to record audio and MIDI directly into your favorite DAW software. The NU1XA can even act as a Bluetooth receiver and integrate with iOS apps via Wi-Fi.

Reviews

Rated 5/5
Wow! Such a great hybrid piano
I was looking for an upgrade from my entry-level spinet acoustic upright. Went to a dealer and tried a bunch, looking at true grands, true uprights, and several digital pianos. I loved and really wanted a grand, but I didn't really have the room for one in my home. Still, I wanted the grand piano sound - that deep, rich, warm sound you really only get with 5+-foot-long strings. Tried some digital pianos, but I didn't like the way they felt. Even the high level Clavinova's just didn't feel right to me. The dealer showed me this piano, which has a true piano action, but the sounds are digitally-produced.

I could tell as soon as I played it the advantages that the true acoustic piano action makes on this piano. Even though hammers aren't actually striking stings, the piano feels exactly like a typical Yamaha piano! You can be expressive with this and can bounce very easily back and forth between this and a true acoustic piano.

The sounds are also excellent. On this model, Yamaha upgraded the sensors. Instead of optical sensors, like most digital pianos, this one has magnetic sensors. I played both this model and the older (now discontinued) model (NU1X), and this one has better expressivity and a wider dynamic range than the older model. This newer model also has improved headphone output for the Bosendorfer sounds, and has more sounds in total.

There are two top-of-the-line, really excellent piano sounds on this. The Yamaha CFX is a brighter piano, and the Bosendorder is a darker piano. Both sound incredible. I use the CFX more often, but enjoy the Bosendorfer for softer classical pieces (think, Claire de Lune) and the like.

One of the craziest things about this piano is that the binaural headphone output is UNBELIEVABLE. Really, on the CFX and the Bosendorder models (both of which include binaural sampling), you genuinely can't tell that you're wearing headphones. It sounds exactly like the piano does in the room. You have to experience it to believe it. I was blown away by it (and still am, after a month or so of playing it). So, when you need to play quietly, and need to wear headphones, you can do it without sacrificing sound quality at all, and you'll barely notice the headphones, allowing for longer play periods.

I will give the caveat that the headphone output impedance I think is somewhere in the low to mid 30s. This is enough for most headphones, but it really could not drive my high impedance headphones (Sennheiser HD 650s). Through those, I had to turn piano to full volume and at full volume it was just barely enough. Luckily, I've got plenty of other low impedance headphones from my studio, so I can use those.

If you don't use headphones (which I don't, most of the time), Yamaha also upgraded the speakers on this new model to give us more speakers on the back. and the speaker placement is very well designed, such that the piano really does sound like a real upright. You can even feel the piano resonate (touch it with your hand, and you can feel the vibrations) just like you would on a true acoustic. The extra speakers on the back work really well for the piano when placed up against a wall (like most uprights are), and push sound off the wall like a real acoustic wood, so you get surrounded with sound.

Pedals are also important on piano, and this piano allows half-pedaling, though I'll admit it's taken me a little bit of practice to find the sweet spot where the half-pedaling kicks in. This is tweakable in the settings though and you can set the half-pedal to fit more of what you're used to, which is another added bonus. The una-corda or soft pedal works great too. It not only makes things quieter/softer, but it also changes the tone just like a true una-corda pedal would. Sostenuto pedal seems to work like it's supposed to, but I honestly don't use it. That's above my level...haha.

The resistance on the pedals also feels natural. Yamaha did a good job with those too.

Lastly, the final bonus of a digital piano is connecting to software and easier recording. This piano has every connection a modern artist could need. You can connect the "Smart Piano" app through bluetooth, and you can also play any music you want through the piano speakers through that same bluetooth. This is useful for playing along, or just enjoying the great speaker system Yamaha's built. There are MIDI in and out if you need that. There are two USB ports, one for a USB stick/drive, for saving recordings or other data, and another for interfacing with your computer. I recently recorded a song through this piano. I first recorded the MIDI, then edited out little mistakes here and there (another bonus, I did not have to produce a "perfect" performance when recording, and could correct any minor issues [e.g. accidentally hitting a key a littler harder than I meant to] afterward in my DAW). Then, after fixing any mistakes or other desired changes in MIDI, I could just feed the MIDI back to my piano (through the USB connection) and record the audio. Voila - a perfect recording of (nearly) my actual performance.

The sounds on here are better than any of my many piano VSTs, so I'll be recording this way pretty routinely from now on. And the velocity sensitivity of the keys with those upgraded sensors, as mentioned before, allows me to play a much more nuanced performance than I could on my old digital piano (which is frankly nowhere near the same class as this). That's also tweakable by the way - you can change the velocity sensitivity with 5 different settings (soft1, soft2, medium, hard1, hard2).

Pretty much everything else is tweakable too.

All in all, this is the best digital piano I've ever played, hands down, and it's even near the top of best piano period I've ever played, acoustic grands included. Extra bonus is that this piano is always in tune (unless I digitally detune it), so no maintenance fees or piano tuning.

I couldn't recommend this more. This will be my piano for the rest of its life, or mine, whichever of us goes first.

It also looks great!
