Sweeping All-analog Phasing Straight out of the 1970s

While the history of guitar pedals stretches to the 1960s, the 1970s are arguably the decade during which the stompbox found its stride. And somewhere amid the era’s iconic fuzz pedal creations and time-tested delays, a humble electro-optical phaser pedal would set the standard for lush and funky phase-shifted tones. The Mutation Phasor II pedal is Warm Audio’s exacting replication of that very same questionably spelled phaser pedal, constructed with a heavy-duty stepped metal enclosure, RC4558P op-amps, and premium vintage-style components across the board to precisely match the sound of the original. Even the 3-knob vertically lined control scheme of Rate, Depth, and Feedback knobs retains the exceptionally intuitive operation of the original. From adding a funky wobble to your bass lines to a straight-up psychedelic swirl, the Warm Audio Mutation Phasor II is pedal-sized gateway straight back to the first golden age of stompbox innovation.

Components worthy of the original

Like all of Warm Audio’s vintage-inspired replications, the Mutation Phasor II is more than a sonic re-creation — its components were handpicked to mirror the original. This pedal’s RC4558P op-amps, vintage-style diodes, carbon resistors, and film capacitors give the Mutation Phasor II pedal a seriously vintage vibe right down to its very core. Plus, Sweetwater’s vintage pedal nerds can’t help but love how the Mutation Phasor II’s unique stepped metal-box enclosure comes right out of the 1970s pedal design playbook.

A trio of knobs to choose from

Just like the original, the Warm Audio Mutation Phasor II sports a vertical line of knobs that are instantly accessible to even the most novice of phaser enthusiasts. The Depth knob increases the width and frequency range of the effect, taking you from a super-subtle wave of slight phase to sweeping modulation worthy of the most out-there experimentation. Next, a Feedback control injects feedback into your wet phase signal — in plainer terms, this knob sets the intensity of your phase, with a particularly present sound when utilizing slow, deep sweeps. Lastly, the straightforward Rate control determines the speed of your phase, from ultra-slow 1/10th sweeps every second to a pulsing 18 sweeps per second.

Warm Audio Mutation Phasor II Phase Pedal Features:

  • Startingly accurate replication of a classic electro-optical phase-shifting pedal with feedback circuit from the 1970s
  • Delivers the same deep, swirling, and lush phasing tone as the original — a tone favored by guitarists ranging from Billy Corgan to Robin Trower to Tom Bukovac
  • Retains the intuitive 3-control configuration of the original
  • Iconic heavy-duty metal-box enclosure that perfectly captures the vibe of the original
  • Built with premium components, including RC4558P op-amps, vintage-style diodes, and hand-selected film capacitors and carbon resistors
  • Buffered bypass operation keeps your signal strong when the pedal is disengaged

Reviews

A Great Tool for the Studio!
This pedal sounds awesome! As you'd expect, it does that classic phaser thing. But at more extreme settings, it also gives you flavors of ring-mod, uni-vibe, and auto-wah. Very cool, indeed.

If you're interested, I've done a video on using this pedal in the studio. It showcases how the pedal sounds on a variety of different sources: Guitar, bass, keys, synth, and drums. You can check it out below, cheers!
True to the original
I had one of these in the seventies and can say it is true to the original. Solid build. Great phaser.
Nice straight and forward
Amazing versatility for the price. Built like tank with easy operation. Only draw back is it's larger than an average pedal, but who cares unless you're throwing it on crowded pedal board. Overall 5 stars!

Much more than a phase-shifter
In the month or so I've had the Warm Audio Mutations Phasor II it has seldom been off. I never had the original Mutron on which it's based (had the Octave Divider though) because I was never a big phase-shifter guy. I'd kick on the old Phase 90 when I wanted to stroll down Memory Lane, but otherwise I thought it was a corny effect. This thing? Not corny. I won't try to describe what it does to your guitar sound, because anything I said would be too limiting. Yes it modulates, swirls, turns your tones inside-out, spikes and dips. Sometimes it's as if an unseen foot is rocking a wah-wah pedal that you don't have, or you accidentally stepped on a Uni-Vibe. It's chewy, all around you, like an old Echoplex. To be sure, it's as heavy as a brick, and it's a big mother, not suitable for everybody's board. But the sound is out of this world, and it's priced so everybody can get one. Get one.

Great Phaser Pedal
I saw this pedal demonstrated on a Phil McKnight YouTube video and I loved the way it sounded. I have two flanger pedals and I find it hard to get an effect I like. This phaser pedal delivers a great phaser effect and has a broad range of parameter adjustments that are very easy to control. Since getting the pedal, it is about the only external effect I use. The price on this and other Warm Audio pedals makes them a real bargain (I also have the WA Centavo Klon clone). The one thing I wish they would address is the lack of easy battery access; you have to remove the back plate to replace the battery. I use a Boss pedal power supply to run it so this isn't really an issue for me but it would be nice to use battery power now and then. After using it, I much prefer this pedal to my flangers. It is built like a tank. I highly recommend this pedal.
