A Worthy Update with Flexible High-gain Tones

Known for its flexible 3-band EQ and copious amounts of gain, the BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone distortion pedal has found its way onto countless pedalboards over the past decades. The MT-2W Waza Metal Zone elevates the classic high-gain tone of the original with top-shelf all-analog circuitry and two separate modes of operation. Benefit from intense sound shaping, thanks to a powerful 3-band EQ with High and Low controls, along with a sweepable Midrange with up to 15dB, or boost/cut on each band. The MT-2W Waza Metal Zone features a premium buffer for ultra-clean tone when it’s bypassed.

Two separate modes of operation

The MT-2W Waza Metal Zone’s innovative dual-gain circuit is bolstered by two separate modes of operation. Standard mode updates the mid-focused sound of the original with improved clarity and lower noise. Custom mode injects the MT-2W’s full-throttle high-gain tones with wider range, increased dynamics, and tighter lows. The addition of this dual-mode switch gives the MT-2W a great deal of added tonal flexibility.

Sweetwater tip: try plugging the MT-2W Waza Metal Zone directly into your amp’s effects return.

Waza Craft: a higher art of stompbox design

The Japanese word “waza” means art and technique, an appropriate name for BOSS’s premium line of redesigned guitar effects pedals. You see, the pedal collectors here at Sweetwater have seen more than enough special-edition stompboxes that are only a paint job away from the originals, which is why we’re so blown away by what BOSS has done with the Waza Craft series. Even in their Standard modes, Waza Craft pedals sound like idealized versions of the originals, offering the same sonic character that made them iconic but with less noise and more consistent tone. And when you A/B the Standard mode and the Custom mod, the contrast is nothing short of astonishing.

BOSS MT-2W Waza Metal Zone Features:

  • Flexible update of the BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone distortion pedal
  • Top-shelf all-analog circuitry elevates the classic high-gain tone of its predecessor
  • Standard mode updates the mid-focused sound of the original with improved clarity and lower noise
  • Custom mode yields a wider range, increased dynamics, and tighter lows
  • 3-band EQ with High, Low, and sweepable Midrange controls

Reviews

The real deal
This pedal is amazing. The spectrum of tones you can get is off the chart. With just a small turn of the knobs you get a completely different sound. I've had it for a few weeks and am still experimenting with it. Well worth it and very happy with it.
Blast from the past
This one does sound clearer than the old one as far as i can tell from my memory. The custom mode is very useable and has a more "normal" eq range, the standard mode is great tho, love the classic metal zone eq range it has. I know alot of people say to plug this into the effects return and use it as a preamp and thats a great idea, but i love using it as a boost in the front end. You turn the distortion to zero and the level at like 4 oclock and eq to taste. Great boost pedal. This is how pat and rob of cannibal corpse would get their tone, very pat era corpse sounding when used as a boost. Sounds great with a super distortion dimarzio. Highly recommended.
Music background: Metal. Death/thrash/groove/70s/60s hard rock. Currently play in Death/thrash band Skeletal Prison
Great for rock too
I'm loving all the tones I have been getting out of the Waza MZ, generally my fav sounds come with the distortion turned down but I can always crank it back up for that hair metal crunch.
She Chugs
It took me a second to find my tone but when I did I fell in love! I plug it in the effects loop return and add the boss super overdrive to it.
Sleeping Giant
I've played guitar in various bands and projects for a few decades. Regardless of the style, as a guitarist I always need at least one GAIN pedal on my pedalboard. I've owned my fair share. I still own plenty. And I love them all. But I recently got this WAZA upgrade to one of the most popular and hated pedals of all time. I am quite impressed. I typically play great sounding humbucking guitars with tube amps set to slight breakup before adding my pedals in front. I use gain pedals to add enhanced "harmonic content" aka dirt and bite. I like the option of a creamy soft-clip overdrive AND a harder-clip distortion type pedal. While this pedal can obviously do high gain metal distortion, it shines for me as a British sounding overdrive. Dark with bite. I have the gain down quite low at about 8 o'clock. With my setup, it sounds like early vintage Van Halen "brown sound". It has plenty of bite when I max my guitar volume and push the amp a little. I often play bass as well, especially on recordings, and I've learned that most bass sounds cut through the mix better with slight distortion, often referred to as "harmonic saturation". Less is more here. Too saturated and everything gets lost. Guitar is very similar. Less is often more. With this WAZA version, with the switch set to the new "C" setting allows for wonderful tweaking of the midrange EQ, where the guitar lives in a mix, both live and in the studio. Thus is what makes this pedal invaluable for me. I now have a great gain AND simple (and quite flexible) EQ pedal all in one place. Add some slight modulation for some "sparkle magic" and some tasty subtle delay and you have enough textures to build the foundation of a great tone. Don't believe the haters or the hype. Just tryit for yourself. In a world full of expensive boutique pedals, BOSS still holds their own lane.
