Strymon's Incredible Rotary Speaker Sim Gets an Upgrade

The depth and dynamic sound of a vintage rotary speaker have made it a beloved piece of gear for generations, with many of today's players seeking to harness this tone in a modern format. Strymon's original Lex pedal set a new precedent for rotary speaker simulations, capturing the enchantment of a rotating Leslie speaker in a pedalboard-friendly stompbox. The Lex V2 builds on this momentum with additional settings and player-focused features, with Mic and Ramp switches and Volume and Dry knobs to experiment with when honing your rotary sound. Sweetwater musicians appreciate this pedal's individually selectable and footswitchable speeds, with extensive I/O options and secondary features to dial in the Lex's sound to perfectly fit your performance needs. Harnessing that iconic swirling sound is a cinch with the Strymon Lex V2 rotary speaker simulator — give it a spin!

Expanded interface controls with handy secondary features

Strymon upgraded the original Lex's interface with two additional controls for a half-dozen easily tweakable parameters at your fingertips. You get the same Speed, Preamp Drive, Horn Level, and Mic Distance controls present in the original model, with a +/- 6dB boost and cut in the form of a Volume knob and a Dry knob for dialing in the perfect balance of dry and effected signal. Dive deeper into the Lex's offerings, and you'll be met with a wealth of secondary features to customize every nuance of your tone. By accessing these options, you can define the cab direction, the slow rotor speed, the acceleration time, and more. In need of some more tonal tweakage? Mic and Ramp switches at the top of the face define where the mic is in relation to the cab and control the rotor transition speed when engaging the Slow/Fast footswitch, respectively.

Under-the-hood improvements provide unparalleled performance

While the cosmetic and sonic improvements are easily uncovered, further inspection of the Lex V2 reveals several changes to its core for an even more premium playing experience. To start, Strymon loaded the Lex with a top-quality JFET input circuit. The result? Enhanced responsiveness, dynamics, and feel tailor-made for gigging performers and touring pros. Swapping between mono and stereo modes is as easy as flicking a rear-panel switch, with the option to now control the Lex via an expression pedal or MultiSwitch Plus. Perhaps best of all, a new ARM DSP chip significantly increases processing power while decreasing energy consumption for a clearer and more accurate tone.

Strymon Lex Features:

  • High-quality rotary speaker simulator pedal that channels the sound of a vintage Leslie
  • 2 individually selectable, footswitchable speeds
  • Speed, Mic Distance, Horn Level, Preamp Drive, Volume, and Dry controls that fine-tune the sound and performance
  • Change the position of the microphone relative to the cabinet with the Mic switch
  • Control how quickly the rotors transition when switching speeds with the Ramp switch
  • Secondary control layout to facilitate deep tonal tweakage
  • Take control of any parameter via any standard expression pedal
  • Connect a footswitch to instantly recall your favorite preset
  • JFET input circuit to enhance responsiveness, dynamics, and feel

Reviews

You spin the sound right round
i use mine to make hotel california vibes or some SRV crazy sounds
powerful and easy to get great rotor/lesley sounds

Sounds great
Sweet guy threw in a power cord which was quite helpful because the one included with the pedal is rather short but I can use it with other equipment closer to my power strip. Very thoughtful and helpful rep recommended this particular petal to replace one that did not produce the rotary "Leslie" effect I was looking for and the return/ exchange process was painless. Nice job Sweeties !!

Petal to the metal !
Everyone I dealt with were super helpful. Had to return a petal that was wrong for my needs and replaced it with superb one in transaction which proceeded quickly and seamlessly. Could not be happier.

Full Midi was my Prerequisite
The Lex V2 checked All of the Boxes !
I wanted to build a small Backline Pedalboard populated with ONLY Modulation and TBE type effects to be exclusively used in my Amp's Effects Loop…
The challenge was that Everything needed to be COMPLETELY controlled via Midi.

Enter Strymon Lex V2 !
Every perimeter Is Seamlessly Remote Controlled from afar using Midi PCs and CCs…
The Rotary tones are Stellar.
This is the ONLY Stand-alone Rotary Pedal I have found that fit the bill to a Tee…

Great with organ
I've been playing the organ professionally for 55 years, and I know exactly what a Leslie speaker sounds like. I've had a lot of Leslie simulators: some got returned, some got sold, a couple were good enough to actually use. I wasn't too interested in the Lex at first; it looked like a guitar pedal and the demos were with guitars; what a guitar player wants from a Leslie sim often isn't exactly what an organ guy wants. I did see a demo of the Lex with an actual organ and decided to try it. It turns out the Lex sounds great with organ. I've used it so far with an XK5, a Mojo 61, and a YC61 and it sounds great with all of them. I've compared it to the two sims often mentioned as 'the best', and while it doesn't sound like them, and they don't sound like each other, and, truth be told, none of them sound exactly like a Leslie, the Lex is right up there with them. You can do a lot more editing than it first looks like you can do - one combination to avoid (imho) is using the full range cabinet sim (kind of a midrange boost) and the front mic position - using them together creates a pretty unpleasant sound. That's my only complaint - turn off the full range sim, use the rear mic, and you get a great, musical, Leslie effect. It looks a little delicate to put on the floor, but I use an old Fender footswitch to change speeds and keep the unit where I can get to it easily. I'd say it's easily as good as the best Leslie sims out there.
