Epiphone’s Take on Adam Jones’ Iconic 6-string Tool

Longtime listeners and eagle-eyed admirers of Tool’s Adam Jones have been waiting for an Epiphone iteration of his iconic axe, and that day has finally arrived. The Epiphone Adam Jones 1979 Les Paul Custom sports a feature set unique to late ’70s Gibson instruments; the body is a classic maple-on-mahogany construction, but the neck’s 3-piece maple design offers enhanced stability — it’s even further upgraded with a sleek piece of ebony for the fingerboard! Under the hood, a bridge-position Seymour Duncan Distortion delivers the same searing high-gain tones found on many a Tool album, while the inverted Gibson Custombucker offers a smooth PAF-style shimmer for your cleaner moments. Lastly, the Epiphone Adam Jones 1979 Les Paul Custom sports all the elegance of a late ’70s Les Paul Custom with multi-ply binding on just about every surface and a moody Silverburst finish.

“Invincible” sonic foundations

Even a cursory glance at Tool’s sonically sprawling, multi-decade discography will reveal a complex landscape of tone, talent, and time, where double-digit track durations are as common as at least three time-signature changes within a given track. With both being regular fare for Tool, the nuances of Adam’s riff crafting invariably require an instrument with the depth and sensitivity needed to endure his near-frenzied range of play styles, and Epiphone spared no effort in ensuring their take on is iconic axe hits all the right notes. Its maple-capped mahogany body is paired with an ebony fingerboard and 3-piece maple neck, blending the warmth and harmonic depth of mahogany with the naturally-imbued brightness and clear voicing of maple, while the ebony conjures near-endless sustain with unmatched articulation in every register.

Over "Forty Six & 2" tonal possibilities

The dual-humbucker configuration of a neck-position Gibson Custombucker and a Seymour Duncan Distortion bridge pickup gives Adam’s signature 1979 Les Paul Custom a vast sonic palette to paint with — from the crushing high-octane metal riffage that serves as Adam’s calling card to articulate and atmospheric cleans. Plus, while this combo is a no-brainer when venturing into heavier territory à la Tool, it boasts an exceptional level of versatility that allows you to cover just about any aural application with ease.

’ 70s-style neck for enhanced stability

True to Adam’s ’79 instrument, his signature 1979 Les Paul Custom features an era-accurate 3-piece maple neck. Compared to the standard mahogany found on almost all other Les Pauls, this guitar’s neck is constructed to increase its dimensional stability, increasing its resilience and resistance to warping, twisting, or environmental damage. The neck is then topped with an elegant piece of ebony for a fast feel, and meticulously sculpted into the Adam Jones Custom Profile — a rounded “C” shape that Sweetwater guitarists find eminently comfortable from the first fret all the way up to the 22nd.

Epiphone Adam Jones 1979 Les Paul Custom Features:

  • Inspired by Adam Jones of Tool’s ’79 Silverburst Les Paul Custom
  • Mahogany body with a maple top delivers legendary Les Paul sustain with just a touch of high-end bite
  • 3-piece maple neck with ’70s-style volute greatly enhances structural stability

Great guitar

This is a great guitar. Of all the Epiphones that I've tried this is by far the best. The one I got is about 9.5lbs, so fairly heavy but not too bad for a Les Paul. The bridge and the tailpiece are fantastic. It came set up pretty well from the factory, I just needed to lower the action a little bit. There was nothing wrong with the tuners, but I swapped them out with some Gotoh SG381 locking tuners, which were a perfect drop in replacement with no drilling.

The fit and finish are great, perfect fretwork, no issues with sharp fret ends. Binding is perfect all the way around. Coming from a PRS custom 24 the neck is definitely thicker than I am used to, but still not like a baseball bat like a lot of epiphones I've played in the past.

Overall I think this is about as close to a Gibson Les Paul as you can get without spending 3k+, and it's miles ahead of most other epiphones. Plus the case is great.

Best feeling Epiphone I've played yet.

I've never played a 70s aera Gibson les Paul, but I always liked guitars with some kind of volute on the back on the neck. I typically prefer 50s style Gibson necks over the 60s and this neck is extremely comfortable! Not as thick as a 50s and not as slim as a 60s, its perfect in my opinion. the addition of the Gibson pickup in the neck and its mounting makes for great sounds. the duncan distortion has been in my top 5 favorite pickups so I may be a little bias when I say this guitar sounds and feels great. and unlike any other Epiphone I've played yet. I love the new headstock look too. But to be able to have a siverburst custom with these specs is the main reason I bought the guitar. Epiphone did a great job with this guitar and its worth the extra money over other Epiphone LP customs in their lineup!

Best Epiphone ever

This guitar is pretty awesome. I am so impressed with it. Have never been a big fan of Epiphone's but this really is beyond what I would have expected from them. Build quality is great, feels good, looks good, plays great and it sounds great. I have had it for about three days and just cant hardly put it down. I have the Berzerker art series one also and this just seems like another animal to me.

'79 LesPaul Custom silverburst.

Grabbed one of these quickly, not knowing if they'd be limited editions? At that price, they sweetened the pot with this non art version by adding the Gibson Custombucker. The headstock means little to me,and had no bearing on my decision.I already knew how good these are from my Frank Frazetta "The Berserker" custom art version.I'm not a fan of the tuners, and they will be immediately replaced with Gotoh keystones.Mines 9lbs 6ozs.which is as lightweight as I've seen on any of these.Anyone who thinks it's too expensive for an Epiphone, only has to remind themselves once how much the same exact spec'd guitar would be with Gibson on the headstock! That's when you snap to reality and just place the order like any sane person ever wanting a proper spec'd version of these guitars would.I have no regrets ordering another one,and you shouldn't either.Easily worth the slight increase in price.I've never seen an Epiphone spec'd out like this!
