A Classic Bass is Back

The classic look and sound of the Danelectro Longhorn Bass guitar is back and better than ever. This short-scale bass sports an easy to play 29.75" length, and a 24-fret neck for extended-range playability. If you're looking for fat, vintage tone, then you'll appreciate the dual Lipstick pickup configuration of the Longhorn Bass. Try flatwound strings for a punchy, upright-style sound. Or play roundwounds and add a bit of grind for instant rock mojo. Everyone from pick players to finger players love the playability and sound of this vintage-vibed bass. For a character-packed alternative to more common bass tones, add the Danelectro Longhorn Bass to your collection.

Instantly identifiable Dano looks and sound

While it may have not sold the numbers other classic bass guitar designs have, the double-cutaway, short-scale Danelectro bass guitar has an incredibly identifiable tone all their own. The Danelectro Longhorn Bass captures this vibe for you in spades. Built firmly in the vintage design of the older Danos, the Longhorn Bass gives you the thumpy, round tone you'd expect from a vintage-style, 29.75" scale bass.

A sound every bass player needs

The Danelectro Longhorn Bass is a favorite among pick players for its percussive attack and deep tone. Finger players love its warm and smooth sound. It has enough punch to make slappers happy and to cut through at a rock gig. A pair of high-output Lipstick pickups deliver fat vintage tone on command. And a pair of stacked volume/tone pots let you sculpt your tone to perfection. Take it from bassists at Sweetwater — the Danelectro Longhorn Bass has all the sounds you need.

Construction updates for modern reliability

Like a great many vintage bass designs, older Danos can sometimes fall victim to reliability issues. But you'll be able to gig your Danelectro Longhorn Bass without worry, thanks to modern updates that bring the bass up to today's high-quality production standards. Each instrument is gone over and set up in Danelectro's California warehouse for the best playability possible.

Reviews

Little Bighorn
I own 32 basses of every stripe and have a playing and gigging history dating almost five decades.I can honestly say that the Longhorn is perhaps the lightest, most comfortable player.Live it will deliver deep lows, rich round and warm mids that'll translate perfectly to recordings.Of course it has it's minuses, but you know what they are if you are at all familiar with it at all.But really it's a fun bass all around and a living piece of bass history.
Great and unique bass
Been looking to add a short scale bass to my collection. Not only does this bass look great, but it has unique sound, and very easy to play. If you're looking for a great short scale bass, this Danelctro Longhorn would be a great choice. I can't put it down.
Fantastically verisitile short-scale
I started on piano years ago and also play guitar but have mostly done bass and keys on any sort of professional level. As a bassist, I've owned a whole slew of instruments. My first was a P-bass, and I've had a musicmaster, jazz bass, and even a Squier bronco pass through my hands. This is my favorite by far.

It's not that great, in a certain sense. With its fixed, rosewood bridge, unusual scale length, and cheap appointments such as the very chintzy volume/tone knobs, it can feel pretty underwhelming. But here's the thing, it's an amazing player. The short scale makes it the fastest bass imaginable, it's barely the size of a full-scale guitar. And its tone is MASSIVE. String it up with round wounds and it growls like a Jazz bass and works perfectly for modern styles, delivering massive low end and harmonics that cut through the mix as well as anything, or even better. With flats you get a great, rubber-band-like vintage tone that sits well in a funk, reggae or Motown type track.

I tend to rely on the neck pickup as my workhorse. It just sounds right, and screams "bass tone." It seems to somehow capture the best of both of the most famous basses, the Fender Jazz and Precision bass guitars (yes, in that order). Do you want the growly, burpy tones of a J-Bass? You got it. The tight mids of a P-bass? You got it. Yet it's totally unique. When I show up with it in the studio there are only two reactions: confusion and knowing approval, and after the first time, the confusion always goes away. This has been a secret weapon since the days of Carole Kaye for a reason.

Some call it overprices, but I don't get this. At time of writing, it is a roughly $600 dollar instrument. I paid a bit less some years back, but a proper Fender P-bass is about a grand right now, and I'd easily chose this any day of the week.

Wrecking Crew Sound
The Dano Longhorn bass has been possibly the best tracking bass for studio use I've ever used. When recording myself, it's size makes maneuvering the studio a lot easier than my P-Basses.
PUT FLATS ON IT.
I use the rotosound shortscale flats and they sit in the pocket so nicely. It sounds great all around, but I love using a dunlop jazz3 pick and lightly palm muting. It gives you that 60's 70's Carol Kaye sound without needing much processing.
Played a live show with it, and the sound guy and several people in the crowd asked about how I got that sound/tone.
Love this bass!!!

A Pleasant surprise
I've been a bass player for a long time. Have had several albums under my belt with major labels and a host of singles deals throughout my career. Done a lot of recording in just about every studio in LA. Retired now, and just writing and releasing video to you tube. What I'm getting at is, I've had a ton of bass guitars in the last 55 years. Had just about all of them at one point or another. So when I decided to try this Danelectro, it was on a lark. To be honest, I just thought it looked cool. I had a Longhorn knockoff years ago (Danelectro went out of production for a few years) and it sounded horrible. So you can imagine my surprise when I plugged this into my board and heard the clear and powerful sound that it produces. I'm shocked and pleased at how great this bass is. It's a 3/4 neck, which for years I thought was "beneath" a legitimate bass player. Big mistake. It has a sound all its own. It may not be the all purpose bass ( ie P-Bass) for example, but if your attracted to it, be assured it is one for the stable. Check out my you tube videos at Frank Demme you tube.
