The 100-watt Workhorse of the Katana Gen 3 Lineup

Harnessing the power of BOSS’s evolved Tube Logic technology, the BOSS Katana-100 Gen 3 is packed to the brim with valve-inspired tone and classic BOSS effects. This 100-watt, 1 x 12-inch combo supplies you with six distinct amplifier personalities to play with, including Gen 3’s all-new addition of a dynamic edge-of-breakup tone in the “Pushed” voice. Plus, a quick press of the Variation switch unlocks a voice-specific tonal alternative for a grand total of 12 amplifier tonalities. Sweetwater’s BOSS pedal fanatics love how the Katana-100 Gen 3’s five independent effects sections deliver a library’s worth of classic stompbox-inspired effects, from spacious ’verbs to ethereal echoes. And even the most discerning tone chasers will find much to love in the Katana-100 Gen 3’s expansive EQ section, comprising a 3-band EQ, 3-way contour control, Presence knob, and eight Tone Setting memories to instantly recall your favorite amp/effect combinations. It’s all finished off with a cab sim-equipped Line Out/headphone/USB outs, Stereo Expand functionality, Cab Resonance controls, low-wattage Power Control settings, and the Gen 3 Tone Studio app. Truly the workhorse of the Katana Gen 3 line, the BOSS Katana-100 Gen 3 supplies stage-ready sound and an arsenal of classic BOSS effects in a highly portable grab-and-go combo form factor.

What’s new for Gen 3?

The Katana Gen 3 series comes swinging right out of the gate with a newly evolved and enhanced iteration of BOSS’s revered Tube Logic technology, capturing all the harmonic nuance and dynamic feel of a true tube amplifier. These improvements elevate all the Katana series’ prior amplifier models to a whole new level of valve-inspired realism, but the technology is truly on full display in Gen 3’s all-new amplifier type: Pushed.

Engineered to exactly replicate the ever-coveted edge-of-breakup sound, the Pushed amp character artfully embodies the touch-sensitive gain characteristics and lively dynamics of a clean tube combo cranked to its breaking point. Furthermore, the Katana’s third generation comes complete with a whole host of improvements to the BOSS Tone Studio, including UI and editing upgrades for a quicker, more straightforward workflow.

12 amp voices to explore

In addition to Generation 3’s new Pushed amp, this Katana contains all five of the MkII series’ time-tested amplifier voices, all optimized by BOSS’s evolved Tube Logic technology. Lead, Crunch, and Pushed are all aimed to please dirt-obsessed players with a wealth of remarkably tube-like tones, and you even get a “Brown” voice that delivers screaming ’80s hard-rock sounds in spades. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Katana Gen 3 series boasts a lush, full-bodied Clean voice and an Acoustic voice to accommodate your acoustic-electric arsenal. It all adds up to a grand total of six amplifiers to choose from, but that’s only half the story — a Variation switch effectively doubles the amp tones at your disposal with distinct sonic spins on each amp’s sound!

Wireless control via BOSS’s optional Bluetooth adapter

While previous Katana amplifiers required a USB connection to access the editor, each model in the third generation now comes equipped with a dedicated jack on the back to connect with the optional BOSS BT-Dual Bluetooth Audio MIDI Dual Adapter. This adapter allows you to make instant edits to your Katana’s tone straight from your mobile device. Plus, you can also use it to stream songs and backing tracks to make the most of your woodshedding sessions!

Power Amp In(put)

Got a floor unit or tube preamp you can’t live without? You can access all 100 watts of the Katana-100 Gen 3’s Class AB power section using the power amp input. Here, you bypass everything before the power amp, so what you hear is exactly what you expect — only live and in living color.

Cab-emulated outputs for silent recording and performance

While the Katana-100 Gen 3 offers a Power Control for getting cranked-amp tone at a low volume level, you can achieve truly silent operation onstage or in the studio by connecting the amp’s line output to a line input on your recording device or a PA. Cab emulation is available on the USB and headphone outputs, as well, so however you choose to monitor your Katana-100 Gen 3, it’ll feel like you’re standing in front of an amp. Selectable cab resonance (Vintage/Modern/Deep) and Air Feel miking emulation (direct, distant, or blended) allow you to tailor emulated tones to taste.

Powered by the Gen 3 BOSS Tone Studio editor

Upgraded with an enhanced UI and editing options for Gen 3, the Katana-100 Gen 3 supports over 60 timeless BOSS effects, and you can load an entire series of them for instant access. The amp's Booster/Mod, FX/Delay, and Reverb controls give you easy 1-knob access to up to five simultaneous effects types, with a color-coded button to switch between preset effects. To completely customize your effects and amp settings, connect the Katana-100 Gen 3 to your computer via USB and load up the Tone Studio software. Here, you can create your own setup or download setups created by pro guitarists at the BOSS Tone Studio website. Best of all, the Katana-100 Gen 3 can store multiple custom amp and effects profiles for instant recall, making this combo a versatile multichannel amplifier.

Reviews

Rich Quality for Fair Price
I really like this "practice amp." I say "practice" with tongue in cheek because it's good enough to use at a live gig, and sounds like a lot of what are generally much more expensive amps. Surprisingly, it even sounds great with my Taylor Builder's Edition K24ce Grand Auditorium electric-acoustic guitar. But it's the mini-button options that make this gem stand out from the crowd, coupled with the built-in ability to save four completely different channel settings. Two thumbs up! A good friend to all ten fingers... and my Gibson ES-339 LOVES it... >_

Work’s perfectly as expected. But for buyer’s
I had already heard good things about BOSS's Katana amps but when going online and looking for a new 100W amp, the most well reviewed one and recommended one was the Katana. Which is definitely held up to my expectations the default tone settings are awesome, but for New Buyer's With this amp, you can pretty much replicate any tone imaginable but to do this BOSS sells the Boss GA-FC foot controller (to summarize it works as its own pedal to activate your custom tone's) now of course you don't *need* to but it but for future reference, if you want to do more with the amp, you will have to drop the extra 140+ USD. Besides that from my own personal experience with the amp, I'm very happy with it will definitely buy from BOSS again in the future.

AMAZING VALUE!!! Love my Katana

I've been playing guitar since 1983, and have owned or used a wide range of tube as well as solid-state amps. As something of a "tone purist", I had been dubious about amp modelers, so I had been hesitant to adopt one.

After much research, I decided to take the modeler plunge and got a Boss Katana Gen 3 100w combo a few months ago. I absolutely love it! I cannot say enough good things about this amp, especially at its price point. No exaggeration - I contacted the serious musicians I knew and raved about the Katana to them.

Modeler amp technology is really coming into its prime. The Katana offers a great overall sound with almost limitless control, making this amp a truly amazing value.

The Katana Gen 3 100w has a seriously impressive wide range of possible tones. You can choose from 6 different base amp modeler voices, with each based on some classics amplifiers, like Marshall, Orange, EVH, and Fender (with a built in variation for each one, btw)! 8 fully customizable programmable channels that can be switched on the fly! And access to nearly every single effect that Boss has ever made, up to 5 effects in a chain, which you can adjust via the Tone Studio software that you can download for free to your PC, phone or tablet! (Note: you need to buy the optional Bluetooth adapter to be able to change settings wirelessly via your phone or tablet.)

The sheer number of settings was a bit overwhelming at first. I think you can adjust everything on the Katana using the knobs on the panel, but with the free tone software, why bother? Yes, there is definitely an initial learning curve for the Tone Studio software. The time is well-spent, though, allowing you to completely customize and store your effect chain tones. And if you want a super fast shortcut to a great sound, the Boss Tone Exchange has hundreds of tone sets you can download for free, too. You can check out the settings that others are using with their Katanas, even some of the popular YouTube content creators.

On top of all this, the amp is also a digital audio interface, allowing you plug your Katana directly into your PC via USB cable and have direct input into a Digital Audio Workshop. You can download a free DAW and be recording with Katana as soon as you take it out of the box.

You will probably want to buy the optional Bluetooth adapter for the Katana. The Boss BT-Dual Bluetooth Audio Midi Adapter (its official name) is currently only $ with the good folks at Sweetwater Music. As mentioned above, this lets you use Tone Studio wirelessly, so you can change settings via your phone or tablet. That would be my one and only criticism: I think Boss should probably include the Bluetooth adapter with the amp, even if this raised the Katana's base sticker price a bit.

Back in the day, I paid more for a multi-effects footpedal than I did for this amp. Don't be fooled by its relatively low cost, the Katana delivers premium sound!

I primarily play high gain music, and the Katana particularly shines here. The 100w combo is definitely loud enough to jam with a drummer. But you can get a highly saturated, pushed to breaking tone at the .5w setting, allowing you to practice quietly without sacrificing gain.

I wish this technology had been around when I first started playing. You can go from beginner to seasoned shredder, evolving to explore any guitar genre, and never outgrow the Katana.

Boss Kitana Guitar Amp
Love it, It was an excellent choice.
Great amp!
I started with the Mk2 50 EX last year, and all though I love the 50 and its foot print, I wanted the FX send/receive for the looper pedal on the 100.

The gen 3 has amazing sound clarity and the stereo headphones jack is nice from Mk2 which was mono. Out of box sounds are great and so many importable patches to use on boss katana series.

I run a ga fc EX with the XSonic air step Kat "EX". The XSonic works as Bluetooth adaptor and footswitch in one, highly recommend it with gen 3.
