KH750 and MA-1 Best Small, Medium l or Mobile Studio Solution

I have a great home/pro studio, 20x25, but has a lot of interesting angles and traps due to being upstairs in craftsman house, I have known for a long time that I probably have mode(s) issues but had a pretty good bead on how to mix for universal transparency, but now and again a mix would be a challenge when listening in other environments and was difficult to decipher why, creating frustration and chewing up valuable time.

I have used KH 120 analog monitors for my main loudspeakers along with a Yamaha HS8 Sub (which I also knew was not ideal due to missing bass detail I really needed to hear to get my mixes to the right place without hours of tweaking and listening in odd places. With way too much energy spent on that vs productive mixing time.

My rig is UAD X8p, 2 UAD Octos, MacBook Pro M1 Pro, Pro Tools Studio and Luna.

First I love the KH 120 monitors, they are not the most 'pleasing' casual listening speakers but they 'are' super accurate and their definition is spot on for the $$, if it sounds good on the 120's it will sound fantastic on anything else (assuming you have a flat room). I believe that the KH 80's would be just as good with the KH 750 and both 120's and 80's with DSP would be even better for any space that is not cavernous.

Key as always, listen, listen, listen to your reference songs before working on any mixing/mastering project, ....Know Your Target Sound Objective!,

So I finally decided I needed room alignment and researched everything out there and new from the get go that plugin or eq approaches such as sonarworks was not my solution (FYI I did try sonarworks in another location a few years ago, it is fine software and approach, I just found managing the plug in in my workflow to be a challenge)

Having the 120's already made the KH 750 with MA-1 an obvious choice.

I purchased the HD 750 DSP with the MA-1 package which saved a few $$,

Packaging is great as always with Neumann equip.

Set up of the sub location is important.....read the manual, do not put it under your desk or in the middle of your room or away from a wall.

It goes against the front wall (the wall you are facing when you are at your desk), 1/4 (25%) distance from the left side of the room or the right side of the room. This serves 2 purposes. 1) being against back wall reduces or eliminates bass reflections off of the back wall. 2) reduces creation of modes that being in the middle or out in the room might produce.

Once you have the sub set follow the manual on how to feed your monitor output to the sub and then feed your loudspeakers from from the sub.

Be sure your loudspeakers are set in an equilateral triangle with your ears in your mixing position. Simply put this means that the distance between you speakers and your ears are all equal. So if your speakers are 40 inches apart at the center front then the distance from each of your speakers to your head should be 40 inches also, this is super important for proper stereo imaging for any speaker set up.

Now attach your Subwoofer and your system (PC/MAC) to a network switch, I used a TP-Link brand Gigabit Desktop Network Switch, it was about $ I think, you will need ethernet 6 or above cables to connect your subwoofer and your PC/MAC to the switch. If you don't have an ethernet output you will need an ethernet adapter. I bought one for my mac for about $.

IMPORTANT: I am not sure why but I also needed to connect my TP-LINK network switch to a router, I think because the router actually creates the network and the switch just connects stuff to the network. So I used my router that came with my cable internet and used a 3rd ethernet cable to connect my cable internet router to my TP-LINK network switch. So I had 3 inputs to my network switch. The subwoofer, my MAC and the cable internet router. I didn't have to do anything with setting up a network on my MAC or on my cable internet router. I just connected all 3 to the switch and everything could talk.

Once I had my sub set and connected, my loudspeakers properly place for my listing position and my sub, mac and cable internet router connected to the network switch was ready to do the alignment.

I set the alignment mic on a mic stand with the included alignment mic holder. This makes it easy to move the alignment mic into place because you have to move it 7 times I think. Small distances but makes it easy to just have the mic stand and move it around.

IMPORTANT: you will need a measuring tape, the Alignment requires you to move the mic to precise locations in your listing position area.

IMPORTANT: it is a good Idea to mark the locations for the alignments on the floor while you do your first alignment. Chances are you will want to redo the alignment either to make it more precise or changes in the room or other reasons, so get some good tape and put a 1 inch square on the floor in each of the measured mic positions as you do your first alignment.

Download and install the MA-1 Measurement software from the Neumann downloads site. There are a bunch of downloads on the site spend some time making sure you select the correct one for your platform MAC

Go to service support then to downloads then select category 'SOFTWARE' then the MA-1 Automatic Monitor Alignment Software there is one for MAC and one for WINDOWS

Once you download and install the software, I would cycle everything...the sub off and on, any other DSP spkrs off and on, system and interface off and on,

Once you finished rebooting, fire up the MA-1 Monitor Alignment App, and do exactly what it tells you to do. Note that it will work best if your environment is truly quiet, not traffic, nobody vacuuming downstairs, no one listing to jimi hendrix in the next room. No noise!!!!.

The first thing the software will try to do is to 'find' the subwoofer and then if it finds it to download a current version of the firmware to the subwoofer, if your network is not working right here is where you will find out. This is where I had my MAC and Sub connected to switch but the MA-1 software couldn't find the sub, so scratched my head and tried my cable internet router connection to the switch, and it worked.

Once you get the latest version of software on the sub, it will ask you what speakers you have in the system and then it will ask you if you want to begin the alignment and off you go, it will start in center position. so you need to know how high your ears are when you are sitting in the listening position, then it will go left of center, right of center, back of center, front of center, a bit below center and a bit above center and you are done.

Once you are done it will show you a graph of where your room is off balance with flat and what adjustments it is making to make it flat, this is fascinating as in my case I had bad departures from flat at 100-200hz and 30-50hz, but the rest was pretty good, no wonder getting my low end was always dicey.

At this point it lets you 'adjust' the 'adjusted' configuration if you feel it is just 'wrong' for some reason, I don't personally see the value in this, unless you have some alien extra sensory cosmic skill in how to flatten a room, but you 'can' do that if you wish.

Once you have it the way you want it, you can do a 'save as' and save the adjustment with a name that you want to associate with the alignment.

Note that I have seen a lot of reviews say you can't save your measurements as presets but this is not true. For example I did several sets of measurements, because I got better at the positioning and more precise with more practice, so I did probably 4 different sets and saved them all, but of course the last one was the best. However, I also have an old pair of Mackie HR824s the original version, which I love for their sound but unfortunately they aren't the flattest monitors ever, but when something sounds good it sounds really good on HR824s. Anyway, I decided to try and run a measurement with the KH 750 DSP and the Mackie's (I have a monitor switch so this was just a matter of switching to the Mackie's for my loudspeakers, but I also needed to determine where my listening position is with the Mackie's since they are wider out than my Neumann's.
I usually sit on the couch behind my mixing chair when I am listening to mix on the mackies so this may my equilateral triangle much bigger like 80 inches by 80 inches by 80 inches, so I did a measurement with this set up and saved it.

So once you have done measurements if you want to 'reinstate' a previous measurement on the system, you just restart the MA1 Alignment Software and I think on the 3rd screen it asks you if you want to do a 'new' measurement of if you want to select a previous measurement, if you want a previous measurement there is a pull down arrow next to the box showing the currently install measurement and it will list "ALL' of your previous measurements and you just select the one you want and it will 'install' that on the subwoofer and any other DSP speakers and off you go. So now I have one called Neumann 120s Best and one called Mackie Best and I can alternate as required.

OK I know the most long winded review in history, but I think a lot of folks have attempted to use this product and run into challenges mainly because they haven't had experience with these solutions and how they work, or get snagged on the network issues, or how to save the measurements or such and I wanted to provide some help and assurances that might assist.

RESULTS: my results are fantastic, I have listened to maybe a hundred reference songs, and a bunch of my old mixes and mixed several songs, and I can tell you that my confidence in my decisions is 100% stronger. I found things in older mixes that were really easy to fix but that made a huge difference in clarity or emphasis or just professional quality.

One thing that I think is a big difference make is that I believe that my old set up was resulting in some phasing of certain frequencies resulting in some frequencies being cancelled out or some frequencies being artificially augmented, resulting in some iffy decisions in the mids and particularly in the upper mids. Now those frequencies are crystal clear, great example is crashes or mid high percussion and where it can can compete with keys/guitars, backup vox, or maybe even highs from reverb/delay/or other effects/busses.

Anyway, I am completely delighted and have new found energy to attack even the most complex mix with the audacity of knowing what I am hearing is the truth.
