Epiphone's Version of Slash's Touring Axe

Slash's Les Paul collection is arguably as celebrated as the Guns N' Roses axeman himself. The Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard is Epi's version of one of the legendary guitarist's favorite touring instruments. This solidbody electric guitar is a Les Paul afficionado's dream, with enough Gibson-inspired features to fill a snakepit and a real-world price tag that's guaranteed to put a dog-eat-dog sly smile on your face. The Slash Les Paul Standard boasts classic maple-on-mahogany construction, which includes a figured maple veneer top that's guaranteed to turn heads. This exquisite rock machine features a comfortable Slash-custom "C"-shaped neck and an easy-playing Indian Laurel fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets, along with a set of vintage-voiced Custom ProBucker pickups, high-quality wiring, and Epiphone strap locks. The Epi Slash Les Paul Standard also includes color-coordinated hardware, Slash’s "Scully" signature drawing on the back of the headstock, and a truss rod cover with a facsimile of Slash's signature, and a custom hardshell case.

Classic construction with Slash’s personal touches

The Epi Slash Les Paul Standard conjures the vibe of the influential Gibson guitars Slash has used during his career. It includes a mahogany body, a AAA flame maple veneer top, and a super-comfortable Slash Custom "C"-shaped neck. The electronics consist of Epiphone Custom ProBucker pickups along with CTS potentiometers with Orange Drop capacitors. You also get color-coordinated hardware components, Slash’s "Scully" signature drawing on the back of the headstock, and a truss rod cover with a facsimile of Slash's signature. Guitarists here at Sweetwater are genuine Les Paul connoisseurs, and they love the sound, look, and feel of this guitar.

Epiphone's acclaimed ProBucker pickups

The key ingredient to the Les Paul's early success was the PAF humbucking pickups. The first of its kind to hit the mainstream, the Patent Applied For humbuckers defined the sound of a generation with their fat tone and clear response. With the price of vintage PAFs skyrocketing, Epiphone set out to create their own PAF-style pickup. Thus, the ProBucker humbucking pickup was born. Inspired by the original PAF sound, these pickups feed your appetite with full overwound tones and incredible clarity. When you plug the Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard into your favorite British-style amplifier, you'll instantly recognize the top-hatted one's signature Les Paul punch.

Slash: hard rock royalty

Slash is renowned as one of the greatest guitarists in rock 'n' roll history. In the waning years of the 1980s, Slash's bluesy, scorched-earth licks brought rock guitar to its knees, forewarning big changes on the horizon. While many of his peers dominated MTV with flamboyant super axes and hyper-processed guitar tones, Slash simply plugged a Les Paul into a cranked British stack, wailed away, and left an indelible mark in music history. The Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard culls many features from his high-end Gibson signature models, providing you with a Slash-inspired solidbody electric guitar that won't drain your wallet.

Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard Features:

  • Resonant mahogany body exhibits incredible warmth and sustain
  • AAA figured maple veneer top ensures a head-turning look
  • Laurel-capped Slash-custom "C"-shaped neck supplies unbelievable playability
  • Custom ProBucker humbucking pickups feed your appetite with old-school PAF tones
  • CTS potentiometers with Orange Drop capacitors ensure spot-on vintage tone
  • Epiphone strap locks safeguard against axe droppage
  • Boasts color-coordinated hardware, Slash’s "Scully" signature drawing on the back of the headstock, and a truss rod cover with a facsimile of Slash's signature
  • Includes a custom hardshell case

Excellent Les Paul

I started playing guitar thirty years ago, and have played Les Pauls exclusively for over twenty. I've owned dozens of Gibsons over the years, and have managed to hold on to a few of them.
I no longer play live and occasionally will record on friend's projects, and usually just noodle at home, but I still love Les Pauls as much as ever.
These past few years have been a re-birth for Epiphone, and they now offer professional grade instruments that are actually affordable for most people. These are MUCH better instruments than what they offered a just a few years ago.
That being said, on top of the few Gibsons I still own, I also bought a new Epiphone LP Custom Jerry Cantrell Wino, an Adam Jones Custom Veil of Bees and now this Slash Vermillion Burst.
I love the new Epi line-up, but I'm not crazy about the Probucker pickups that Epiphone uses, so I look for models with unique pickup combinations.
All three of these guitars are absolutely pro-grade instruments, and I wouldn't hesitate to gig or record with any of them.
My new Slash arrived almost perfectly setup to my liking, just needed new strings and a fretboard conditioning. The neck shape is a Les Paul players dream, the figuring on the top looks fantastic, easily a AAA veneer. The nut is cut perfectly, the hardware is holding tight, frets are smooth and appear to have been polished. And the Custom Probucker pickups sound GREAT. I normally play with moderate to high Gain settings, and they have a perfect, warm growl, but also clean up extremely well. This is a well-upgraded Les Paul Standard.
So, if you're in the market for new Les Paul, for only a hundred bucks more than the Regular LP Standard, you get unique color choices, much better pickups (in my opinion), a great neck and a Hard Case.
It was a no-brainer for me, this is a great guitar.

Outstanding Les Paul

Another victory for Epiphone! It is extremely clear at this point that one does not need to go into debt and drain their bank account for a high quality, great sounding, and oh so welcoming feeling Les Paul guitar! I have about half a dozen Epi LPs, and this thing may just resonate (unplugged) and ring out better than even my '59 Epi, just a really nice fiddle, and wow that finish! Superb instrument, very happy!

Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard Electric Guitar - Vermillion Burst * REVIEW *

I've had this guitar for two weeks now. I was able to pick it out of a lineup on Sweetwater's website so I was able to get my preference for the flame top as well as a heavier guitar. Not all flame tops are equal either, even on veneers. My Sales Engineer, Andrew Reina, called me shortly after placing my order and kept me in the loop throughout every step of the process. I did not choose the optional setup, but the guitar came fairly close to my preference and there was an inspection card inside the case signed by two different inspectors to make sure this wasn't some factory reject. Most places, even some in-person, brick-and-mortar retail shops just send the guitar straight from the factory and sell it to you as-is without even looking at it. This was a really nice change from that. I think it needed to be mentioned here. Anyways, to the guitar...

It was a little on the heavy side as advertised, over 9 pounds. Very well built guitar. Feels good and sturdy. The neck profile was almost identical to the Gibson counterpart I had recently played at a local guitar shop which I found very comfortable in my hand, but $3k+ is just not in my budget. The fretwork was very well done, no sharp bits along the binding. I had to lower the action a little bit to suit my hands, which is perfectly ok, and still no fret buzz at all. The Indian Laurel is much lighter than Rosewood, but it feels just fine. The nut on the guitar is fine and it stays in tune pretty well also. Even the G-string!

The finish was as I expected since I was given some additional photographs via email from Andrew. For a glossy veneer, it looks quite nice in person. There was a slight cosmetic issue with the binding where the front single cut meets the neck. A little bit of the finish is still in there. (I tried to attach a photo) I am not going to worry about it, but still going to mention it. Some people do care about that more than others. The Gibson one I had played was far more red/red where this one is black/red. I know it's not an apples to apples comparison with a veneer vs. an actual painted flame top, but I thought I'd still mention the difference.

The pickups:

The neck pickup. I hated it at first because it sounds quite muddy. Its purpose is to play leads from Sweet Child of Mine or November Rain. It will definitely give you that sound, but that's it. Don't try to do anything else with it. Even on clean, it's better to go to the bridge pickup. Or in the middle position with the neck pickup turned down a bit. Speaking of, the pots were ok. I've seen better, and worse.

The bridge pickup. It's actually pretty good and unique in a way. Almost gives an overdriven sound to it. It's hard to describe. If you play open chords it almost makes it sound like you are playing through an overdriven tube amp. It sounds different than my other Les Paul's played through the same setup. Sometimes I really like it, sometimes I wish it sounded more like my other Les Paul's. I bought it knowing I have a spare set of EMG 81/85 that I will likely swap in if I keep it, which I am leaning towards at this time.

The pickups, pots and the little cosmetic issue are why I gave it 4 stars and not 5 stars. 4 stars is still pretty good though! I know it's a Slash signature model so it should sound like Slash. It does that for sure and I will rate it as such instead of rating it from comparing it to my other Les Paul's. The Epiphone R9's pickups/pots/etc. beat this one's by a good margin, but it's not geared toward Slash's sound either. I gave that one a 4.5 for different reasons.

If you're thinking of buying this Les Paul to have a more "normal" Les Paul sounding guitar, definitely play one and or shop around a bit first. especially considering the $ price point. You can pretty much afford any other Epiphone Les Paul for that, actually less. Again, this guitar was really well made and the case is pretty nice too. The deep red lining really made the vermillion finish pop!

Awesome guitar

I purchased this guitar as soon as it went on sale at sweetwater and I have to say it's my favorite les paul. A lot of people online in reviews are saying it's the 59 neck profile but I believe it's a little more asymmetrical than that, at least in my opinion. Kind of a medium chunk to it. Feels and plays great. The red burst looks awesome. I also picked up the Anaconda burst one as well. I swapped out the pickups in one with the Seymour Duncan Slash pickups to compare them to the new Epiphone custom pro buckers and they are honestly about the same. I've never been a huge fan of the probuckers or the alnico classic ones but these pro bucker customers are really good. I wish Epiphone would just make these their stock pickups in all of their guitars. I'm a huge slash fan so I would eventually like to get all 5 models but so far the Vermillion and Anaconda are both killer.

excellent guitar!

This is my favorite guitar I've acquired to date! Beautiful and resonant! I was holding out for an Epi 1959 LP but changed to this model because it was available and I like the gloss finish on this better than the faded gloss on the Epiphone '59. Thank you to Sales Engineer Riley Koenemann and Sweetwater luthier Chandler Cashdollar.
