Iconic Trident EQ For Your 500 Series Chassis

In the 1970s, just about every major pop act recorded at London’s Trident Studios. At the heart of the studio’s sound was its in-house-built A-Range console, which quickly became famous for its highly musical EQ and the rich, fat tone it imparted to every signal passed through it. Featuring all-discrete hand-wired circuitry developed by Malcolm Toft and Barry Porter, only 13 of the original A-Range desks were ever made. Worldwide demand for the “Trident sound” resulted in the more widely distributed 80 Series consoles, which went on to record countless hit records in the late ’70s and ’80s. Today, Trident Audio Developments’ 80B 500 Series EQ meticulously re-creates the circuitry of this classic 4-band equalizer, serving up legendary sonic character and formidable tone-shaping prowess in a convenient 500 Series module.

Powerful British EQ

The Series 80B 500 Series EQ equips your rack with the four-band EQ from the Trident Series 80 console — one of the most iconic “British EQ” circuits ever designed. You get switchable high and low shelving bands, augmented with two swept low- and high-mid bands and a switchable 12dB/octave 50Hz highpass filter. The interaction of the midrange bands has been carefully engineered for maximum effect on music program material and a generous overlap is provided for flexibility.

Formidable tone-shaping

A painstaking re-creation of the 4-band equalizer from the Series 80 board, Trident Audio Developments’ 80B 500 Series EQ gives you a High band switchable between 8 and 12kHz, a High Mid band sweepable from 1 to 15kHz, a Low Mid band sweepable from 100Hz to 1.5kHz, and a Low band switchable between 60 and 120Hz. Also onboard is a 12dB/octave 50Hz highpass filter and a handy peak overload LED. The Series 80B’s unique, highly resonant Q peaks are cultishly coveted by many world-class engineers for fine-tuning instrument sounds. Sweetwater’s advice: the 80B 500 Series EQ is highly musical, very powerful, and sounds like no other. It will be a valuable tool in your quest to make ever-better-sounding recordings.

Reviews

Review correction
I just got a 2nd one of these so obviously I like them. Can't wait to try it out on stereo sources!

To correct my review of the first one I got... I misspoke. It's fixed Q, not proportional. Doesn't change my mind about it. Great price and plays well with the mono sources I've tested so far. Very nice on acoustic and electric guitars, bass and vocals. Now that I've got the pair, I'll test it on the drum buss but I'm sure I'll have no problem dialing up a great tone. It's very easy to dial up great tone with the 80B-EQ.

Great broad strokes EQ
Without separate "Q" controls, this isn't the best choice for surgical but to shape tone and get a track where you want it, it's hard to beat. Like the API 550 A and 550B, it's got proportional Q which gets narrower as you increase (or decrease) the gain. This makes it surprisingly fast to dial in tonal bliss. I might even like this more than my SSL E-EQ modules.

I'll be ordering a second for stereo operations or for hard panned rhythm guitars. This EQ performs well above its humble price and I have no guilt recommending it.

A perfect-easy-to-just-use-everywhere EQ.
Just recently bought one since it was on a great sale here at Sweetwater. Wasn't planning on buying one but for the price and the reviews seemed like I and everyone should own one. I used it for a few days and then bought another. Now I have a pair and have it on my master buss chain. This EQ just sounds great with just simple small tweaks. At first I thought an EQ needed bandwidth (Q) on every band but I am really glad it didn't (one less thing to tweak) because you don't need it with this one. Plain and simple that just sounds really really good. Just a few minor tweaks and sounds seem to jump out of my monitors. (well of course it did, it got louder) But after level matching, if it's bypassed, the sound just seems lost.
Amazing sound! I might buy 2 more.

No these aren't surgical. These are musical. :)
Best eq’s for the money
I had made many gold and platinum records and used every eq's imaginable. Yes, this eq is qualified to make those great sounding recordings.
You just need a good engineer.
This a true professional eq that many professional producers swear by.
I love the Trident sound!
Now you just need a hit song!

GOOD EQ !
I made a Vocal chain with the Phoenix Audio DRS-1R/500 500 Series Microphone Preamp and the TRIDENT 80B , the EQ brings it right to the sound I was looking for / very creative options for sculpting the sound you want and built very well . my fave is the midrange section !
