Genelec Quality in an Ultra-compact Monitor

When it comes to performance versus size, the Genelec 8020D continues to set the standard for compact nearfield monitoring. The latest iteration of a studio classic, the 8020D delivers higher SPLs, yet lower energy consumption, than previous revisions. The 8020D houses a 4-inch woofer, fortified by an advanced reflex port design, exhibiting outstanding, low-distortion low-frequency reproduction down to 62Hz. Moreover, this monitor’s 0.75-inch tweeter, bolstered by Genelec’s Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW), yields flat on- and off-axis response and rock-solid imaging. Genelec’s Minimum Diffraction Enclosure (MDE) ties it all together, certifying a smooth frequency response, minimal cabinet-edge reflections, and a superbly accurate sound stage. You also get dedicated high-headroom amplifiers for each driver, a premium active crossover, sophisticated drive unit protection, and an array of powerful room response compensation features. Additionally, the 8020D includes Genelec’s power-saving Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) technology and a vibration-decoupling Iso-Pod stand. Boasting industry-leading clarity, a compact form factor, and intelligent features, the Genelec 8020D offers a definitive choice for professionals who demand precision in every mix.

Intelligent features for intelligent monitoring

Like all of Genelec’s 8000-series monitors, the 8020D is replete with proprietary technologies, ensuring ultra-precise audio reproduction in any playback environment. For starters, the 8020D features Genelec’s DCW, certifying flat on- and off-axis response for a wider sweet spot, an increased direct-to-reflected sound ratio for reduced room coloration, and incredibly solid imaging. Next, Genelec’s MDE cabinet, which features rounded edges and a gently curved front and sides, delivers a smooth frequency response, minimizes cabinet-edge reflections, and facilitates an incredibly accurate sound stage. Finally, thanks to Genelec’s ISS power management system, you’ll never have to worry about shutting down your studio monitor again. After a period of time, if ISS doesn’t detect anything, it switches your 8020D over to a low-power sleep state, safeguarding your gear and sparing you the wasted electricity.

Flexible mounting options for precision positioning

The versatile mounting features of the Genelec 8020D include integrated rear support points for wall and floor stands, as well as a third 3/8-inch thread for mounting on the cabinet base. Furthermore, each Genelec 8020D monitor comes with an Iso-Pod. The Iso-Pod is a sophisticated mounting stand that enables the 8020D to function in either the vertical or horizontal orientation. Additionally, it allows the acoustic axis of the monitor to be directed toward the listener while simultaneously acoustically and mechanically decoupling the monitor from the surface it is resting on.

Genelec: a legacy of monitoring excellence

Unerring full-range monitoring is a must-have for any studio that aspires to world-class status, which is why Genelec monitors are found in the world’s most distinguished recording facilities. Drawing on decades of professional monitor design expertise, Genelec’s engineering team painstakingly develops and optimizes every component in the company’s state-of-the-art facility in Iisalmi, Finland. As such, Genelec products feature superior build quality that ensures premium performance and faithful service, session after session, year after year. Reviews

Genelec is King of Near-Field
Genelec is a highly respected brand. The 8020's ABSOLUTELY live up to that log time respect. Perfectly flat response with very accurate bass, mids, and highs. You can bet your whole project on these things. I've been able to EQ my mixes SO much more precisely than I could with even my most expensive cans. Love these little monitors.

Mighty Genelecs!
So, now I know. These are what 'they' have always said about them. They have earned their reputation, and as far as I can tell, it is well-deserved. They have a clarity and a cleanliness about them. I'm certain that I got the right model, as the size of the 8020's is perfect for my room and set-up. (see photo) I'm a voice actor and singer and these are perfect for my needs. I do indeed 'do' music as well, and they are up to the task, keeping in mind that I do not require tons of deep bass response! They do produce plenty of volume-far more than I can use. Highly recommended! Oh-thanks to Andy Rice for his help!

Sonic Perfection
Unvarnished clarity.
Precision.
Sounds like a 5 inch.
- If you are in that space for a "typical" 5 inch, don't go typical, invest in the 8020D.
A lot of depth for such a small package!
I recently A/B'd these against a Neumann KH80 pair and I was blown away by the clarity and definition the Genelecs had, not only in comparison but also how they stand on their own. Besides the obvious "sub" energy that a 4 inch speaker simply can't reproduce, these seemed very accurate and flat across the whole spectrum. They also seemed way more 3-dimensional compared to the KH80s, especially when it comes to where things were placed in the stereo field, as well as clarity in time-based effects (reverb/delay tails.)

These were tested in a treated control room at a professional recording studio, but I'd imagine with all the control functions (multiple levels of low shelf, a high shelf, and a low cut filter) that these would sound great in any less-than-ideal acoustic environment like a bedroom studio.

These are now my reference speakers, with my mains being a pair of Focal Twin6be with the sub6. I imagine I will now do most of my final mixing on the Genelecs, though.

O my !!!
These genelec are unreal for there size I have never heard anything that comes close . I mean my mouth dropped open !that sound so good. I own the 8010 and there are fantastic , there is about three to four times more sound out of the 8020d the bass shakes the room all sound so good it grabbed your heart sound like you half a sub on !!! The balance is perfect you can hear everything I say even the place ment of guitar drum bass etc they have that magical sound that if you close your eyes you can see the band . They go down to48 hertz s and drop from there. What can I say more they pass all my test they sound so luscious to listen to!!! Thank genelec and sweet water !
