Shure's Classic Unidyne Instrument Mic

Vintage mic aficionados at Sweetwater are stoked — Shure's classic Unidyne instrument microphone is back, and better than ever. In the late 1960s, Shure's Unidyne III technology evolved into the SM57 we know and love; a mic that became a cornerstone of all genres of music. But before the SM57, there was the 545; and it was a fixture on stages and in studios around the world.

Impressive versatility

Today's 545SD features dual-impedance operation and a uniform cardioid polar pattern that make it a versatile dynamic mic for the capture of many types of instruments as well as for use on lecterns in public address systems. Its lockable on/off switch further increases its impressive utility. Stock your studio with a piece of music history: the Shure 545SD!

Shure 545SD Dynamic Microphone Features:

  • Ideal for the capture of many types of instruments
  • A popular choice for use on lecterns in public address systems
  • Uniform cardioid polar pattern for effective feedback resistance
  • Selectable dual-impedance operation

545SD Is Great!

Imagine an SM57 with a more airy top end and a less "honky" midrange. That's what this mic sounds like. I have watched videos comparing the vintage 545 vs the current SM57, and the conclusions I had listening to those examples is the exact same conclusions I have comparing the 545SD to my SM57. I think it's safe to say the 545SD is an accurate reissue of the vintage mic. Sadly this doesn't come with a leather bag like every other Shure mic, but the beautiful look and great sound more than make up for it so it still deserves 5 stars!

Great Mic

I got this mic as a multi purpose mic but for the most part I am recording voice at the moment.

This mic is an excellent mic to have in my locker — affordable and it sounds great on my voice before and after some EQ and compression.

It does seem to be somewhat low gain — I have to really crank it up on my mixer to about 60dB

It has a really nice airy top end and roughness which seems to work nice on male rap vocals — I'd say better than my SM7B on its flat settings and with air. This mic is definitely a sleeper!

An excellent mic equal to if not better than the SM57

I found out about this mic here at Sweetwater. I was actually thinking of getting the SM57 but I saw this one and I read more about it and the history, and I knew I had to get not one, but of TWO of them to do stereo mic recordings. They arrived safe and sound (with candy!) and come with their own mic clip and euro-size washer. I love the look of it. It has a beautiful vintage feel to it. And fortunately, it sounds as good as it looks. I tested them out on my parlor size 6-string steel and Martin 12-string steel acoustic guitar, and even my Yahama 6-string nylon Guitarlele - all sounded great through the 545. The sound of the 12-string through the 545 in particular stood out to me. Very well-balanced. And as a stereo pair, these are incredible. These make a great and inexpensive introduction into stereo mic technique and placement. I also use this as my main mic for my zoom meetings. I also tried percussion using the stereo set up as well. A great all-around microphone, these are worth the money!

Friendlier version of an SM57

I like the relaxed sound of this mic. Very subjectively speaking it's a looser sound than a 57, like the difference between a Jensen speaker and a JBL, or the difference between a Fender bridge using bent steel rather than cast blocks. I've used SM57s for years, but it has never been a "go to" mic for me for either voice or electric guitar.

If you're looking for a tight sound, this is not your mic. On the other hand if you are interested in something that sounds subjectively less stuffy than a 57 this may work for you. Please note that it is not a neutral mic - less stuffy in this case does not mean accurate. As others have pointed out, the 545SD is just less "honky" when used in place of a 57 and as such fills a critical spot in my mic collection for voice, guitar, and reeds.

545sd

Is an excellent cardioid unit just like the 57 just a bit more solid + the on and off button good sound I'm using it mainly for my bongo & cajon playing.
Music background: church & also a salsa quartet
