Full-throttle Humbucking Power

Gibson’s PAF and ’60s-style humbuckers may rule the roost when it comes to mellow old-school tones, but what if you’re looking for something a bit meaner? The Gibson Accessories Hot Alnico 498 series of pickups provides an aggressive and more powerful spin on the classic 490 series and is designed to excel with screaming rock leads and crunchy high-gain rhythms. That being said, the sheer power of the 498’s Alnico V and matched-wind construction means it’s no slouch when it comes to cleans — this pickup’s natural clarity produces beautifully lush and defined sounds when it comes time to turn the gain down. Finally, the 498 boasts a fully shielded and wax-potted construction, which Sweetwater guitarists find to be essential when fighting off pickup squeal and feedback at high volumes.

Gibson Accessories 498T Hot Alnico Bridge Humbucking Pickup Features:

  • A hotter, more powerful take on Gibson’s classic 490 series of humbuckers
  • Alnico V magnets and matched coil windings that produce an upper midrange bite with incredible sustain and punch
  • 4-conductor wiring for parallel, series, or split-coil wiring schemes
  • Fully shielded and wax-potted construction that reduces squeal at higher volumes
  • Pole piece spacing fine-tuned for placement in the treble position
  • An excellent choice for rock guitarists of all stripes

Reviews

better than Seymour
Yep so I have some really expensive Seymour Duncan hot rod set on my other Les Paul. Isn't that good? I'm not saying they're not but they're just a little too heavy metal for me. You know I get it. It's all about the amp and how you said it. But I'll tell you I tried the 498t Gibson humbucker knowing that I was probably not going to like it and return it. Actually you've been called for the return label. I don't know what made me do it but I went and had it installed and I am so happy I did. They have a much cleaner full-bodied rock and roll sound tod inspires.

Easy upgrade for Epiphone
Upgraded the pickups in my Epi LP Standard with this and a Gibson 490r in the neck position. Now my guitar sounds like a real Gibson instead of an imitation, and the pickups are hot enough for modern rock/metal.
Music background: Enthusiast songwriter
The perfect pickup
This came in the bridge of my 2019 Les Paul studio and I can't say enough good things about it. Classically voiced, it strikes the right balance on aggressiveness and articulation. Not too soft, not too harsh. Not too muddy, not too metal-y. It'll do the things you want it to do but it's forgiving at the same time; it doesn't scream out for attention obnoxiously like PRS 85-15s or high output Seymour Duncans. Sure, you lose some of that dynamic definition but it also lets you off the hook if your technique isn't Yngwie-level.

It's all preference, so if you want to play the classics or rock 90s alt - big overdriven chords, soaring solos, classic crunch and what-not - this is great. If you want to chug all day long, go get something more metal.
Great Tone
I've swapped many pickups in my time and I have always loved this pickup in a Les Paul . Great balance of Mids, lows and highs . There are many great pickups , but I like the older Gibson models.
Music background: Semi pro for over 40 years
not worth it
I bought this to replace the pro bucker too in the lead position of my brand new Epiphone and come to find out it's not as good as the pro Booker 2 sounded. So now I'm out the price of the pickup and I have to have the older one reinstalled which is going to cost more money. The grass isn't always greener on the other side
