About Wireless Microphone Systems
Choosing a wireless microphone system involves several decisions. Analog or digital? Ultra-high frequency (UHF) or 2.4GHz? Handheld or lavalier? The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also regulates which frequencies are legal to operate on, adding another layer to the process. Handheld, Headset, and Lavalier Wireless Mics
Are you a lead vocalist? A handheld wireless mic system is a common starting point. Singing dancers and drummers, dance and fitness instructors, and other active performers often appreciate the freedom of a headset wireless system, which holds the capsule at a consistent distance from the mouth. If you’re a presenter, worship leader, or stage actor, a lavalier wireless system clips to clothing and stays discreet. These wireless microphones are built for performers in motion. For vocals tracked at a fixed position, our studio and recording microphones are a better fit.
Wireless Instrument Mics for Guitar, Bass, and Horns
Sweetwater also carries wireless systems made for brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, as well as electric guitar and bass. A wireless instrument mic typically clamps to a horn bell or a drum rim and feeds a bodypack transmitter. Guitar and bass players use a plug-on transmitter that connects to the instrument’s output jack and sends to a receiver at the amp.
UHF, VHF, and 2.4GHz: What That MHz Number Means
The megahertz (MHz) figure on a wireless system refers to the radio frequency (RF) band it transmits on, and that band affects how many channels can run together and how far each one reaches. UHF systems are a common choice for professional wireless microphone systems, since they tend to offer more channels, longer range, and stronger resistance to interference. Very high frequency (VHF) systems are less common today, but they remain an affordable option for simple, single- or dual-channel setups like classrooms, karaoke, and presentations. License-free 2.4GHz digital systems avoid the TV bands, though they share spectrum with Wi-Fi.
