A Transatlantic Tonal Union

Victory Amplification’s V1 series of pedals packs the power of their full-size tube amps into a pedalboard-friendly package! While V1 The Duchess may not have any tubes, legendary British stompbox guru Adrian Thorpe was tapped to fine-tune the entire V1 series to perfectly capture the voice, feel, and vibe of their valve-powered siblings. Their research has certainly paid off — V1 The Duchess more than delivers on all-American amplifier power, from sparkling ‘60s style cleans to a surprisingly gain-heavy take on the typical American amp formula. Bass, treble, and middle controls allow you to shape your sound for almost any 6-string application, while the volume and gain controls take you from a pristine cleans to rich saturation. If your pedalboard real estate is at a premium, the V1 series’ combination of tube-flavored tone and stompbox simplicity is a winning formula for sonic victory!

American power meets British amplifier royalty

The V1 Duchess pedal sports the era-defying tone of a vintage-style American amplifier. It’s a sound that can be found in almost any genre, thanks to its pure versatility — and that versatility shines through on the V1 Duchess’ flexible tonal palette. Sparkling cleans? Check. Edge-of-breakup grit? Check. All-out aggressive overdrive? Check. V1 The Duchess even has a slight British accent when cranking up the gain knob, and while this pedal might have been born across the pond, Sweetwater’s guitar experts are proud to award this pedal with dual tonal citizenship.

Big sound, tiny box

Victory Amplification’s V4 series of preamp-in-a-box pedals took the world by storm when they were first announced, providing guitarists with true tube amplification tone in an exceptionally portable form factor. However, what if they were more portable? That’s the mission of the V1 series, a range of stompboxes that squeezes the respective sonic might of the Copper, Duchess, Jack, Kraken, and Sheriff into a pedalboard-friendly size! While the V1 series ditches the tubes, they were designed in collaboration with legendary pedal maker Adrian Thorpe to precisely capture the voice of their valve counterparts. Handbuilt in the U.K., Victory Amplification’s V1 pedals can easily be tossed onto even the smallest of boards for massive tones in a standard stompbox form factor!

Victory Amplification: cutting-edge designs for modern players

Established in England in 2013, Victory Amplifiers has provided countless artists like James Bay, Richie Kotzen, Rabea Massaad, and Guthrie Govan with elite-quality amplifiers to bring out the best in their respective sounds. With a firm commitment to "simplicity in operation, flexibility in use, and absolutely no compromise in tone," Victory has pumped out a stream of groundbreaking and award-winning products, ranging from the V4 Sheriff Preamp Pedal to a plethora of artist-series amps and the almighty VX100 Super Kraken. Whatever sonic flavor you demand, there's a Victory amp that's up to the task.

Victory Amplification V1 The Duchess Pedal

Little box of big sound. Built tough sounds great. If you own anything victory you can expect the same quality. Great to have in the tool box

Truly Outstanding for Guitar and Bass

I bought this on a whim. You can describe it as a low-to-mid gain pedal, but that doesn't really do it justice. When you turn this pedal on, everything sounds better. Chords are clear and articulate with satisfying lows and hi-fi highs. The middle knob is very sensitive and can take you from fully scooped to mid-focused. Boosting the mids also adds grit. Turning the volume knob past noon starts to add drive and, combined with the gain knob, can get you some surprisingly dirty tones ranging from early AC/DC to fuzzy chaos. And this isn't even to mention how good this pedal is for bass. I'm not a bass guitarist, but I have a bass and I record it for my terrible songs. This pedal really works awesome for bass. The bass knob comes into its own here and allows you to tame some low end, while the mid helps shape it. I have the Jack V1 and the Sheriff V1, but the duchess blows both of them out of the water in terms of utility and sound quality. This is an always-on pedal because you simply won't like your tones nearly as much when it's off.

wonders on bass?

Wow, this pedal is blowing my mind.
I have two basses,
a smooth and SUPER bright mexican fender p/jazz split (jazz neck, p body),
and a frankenstein bass - '90s mexican squire body, vintage 70's pickups, a vintage mustang c-neck (found in the attic of a bar, woody thump all day), stacked pots...
anyway, low-gain or high gain,
this pedal made both of my basses sound way better.
the EQ was actually super useful in dialing in the best bass tone I have ever been able to get.
going into my orange little bass thing, I dialed down the bass on the duchess a little and boosted the highs on my amp and it is truly something else.
Music background: play bass for 2 decades, still terrible.

Who Needs a Clean Pedal?!?!

Apparently I do! I have a Mesa Cali Tweed 6v6 4:40 with a Vintage 30 speaker in it to make it a bit of a high gain pedal rocker combo. With the Mesa I can dial in a nice pedal friendly setting and get some great tones with high gain pedals like the Friedman BE-OD Deluxe. I can also dial up the gain on the Mesa and get a nice pushed clean tone. However, when I do that I sacrifice a good pedal friendly setup and the distortion pedals don't sound as great.

That's where this pedal comes in. I bring down the gain on the Mesa back to pedal friendly territory and use this V1 Duchess to dial in a pushed clean tone setting. Now I can have all the tones I want.

I do the same thing with my JP2c which also has a nice pedal friendly clean channel if you set it up that way.

This also works as a unique sounding boost pedal. And as an added bonus with the gain knob all the way up this pedal seems to mimic a vintage amp "collapsing" sound like when you overrun the transformer, rectifier, speaker, etc. I dont know if they meant to do that, but it kind of does it.

Big Amp Sound

I've been using the Duchess V1 pedal for my Rhodes rig and it's been absolutely mind-blowing! Though I really like the loud cleans of my solid state amp, I needed some warmth and crunch without getting a new amp, and this little pedal really delivered. It responds really well to my touch on the Rhodes, as well as to the volume pot, plus it makes my distortion and ring mod pedals much more "friendly." It has truly become my always-on pedal. Thank you Victory Amps and ThorpyFX for this brilliant box!
