Put Some Meat on Your Guitar Tone
Do you feel like your tone is missing something? Well, Phil X did, so he and the pedal gurus at J. Rockett Audio Designs conjured up a solution: the Phil X overdrive. Boasting separate Drive and Boost sections, the PXO is much more than a mere dirt pedal; it’s almost like a full-blown channel strip for your guitar. The Drive section includes Volume, Treble, Bass, and Gain knobs, enabling you to fine-tune your gain structure and tonal foundation. The Boost section includes Tilt EQ and Level controls, allowing you to inject your signal with additional grunt or sizzle with a simple knob twist while also goosing the rest of your signal chain with even more output. The PXO includes a Pre/Post switch that swaps the order in which the two sections cascade and dedicated Boost and Drive footswitches. This stompbox’s controls are powerful on their own, but the real fun is experimenting with how they interact with one another. Both onstage and in the studio, the J. Rockett PXO will completely transform your tepid guitar tone.

Optimize your gain structure
The PXO’s Drive section puts massive sonic-sculpting power at your fingertips. It all starts with the Volume knob, which decides how hard the pedal hits the front end of your amp, thereby determining not only the core sound of your entire guitar rig but also how it feels. Treble and Bass knobs provide most of your tone shaping, enabling you to increase or decrease your top end and bottom end. Finally, the PXO’s Gain knob adjusts your overall gain interactively in tandem with the Volume knob. Here at Sweetwater, we paired the PXO with a generous selection of our favorite amplifiers, and we can state with the utmost confidence that it made each one sound even better!
Kick your amp in the teeth
You’ll undoubtedly find scores of uses for the J. Rockett Audio Designs PXO’s footswitchable Boost section. The Tilt EQ knob determines the overall character of the pedal’s boost: turn it clockwise for more treble and less bass; turn it counterclockwise for more bass and less treble. Cascading the PXO’s two sections is when things get really interesting, as the Drive section’s Treble and Bass controls interact with the Boost section’s Tilt EQ in myriad ways. You also get a Level control that can slam either the front end of the pedal or the front end of your amp depending on the Pre/Post switch’s setting.
