From providing communication between your computer or mobile device and your mixer to ensuring that you can connect all of your gear to your DAW, the networking options and hubs you'll find at Sweetwater cover all of the less-glorious aspects of putting your media rig together. Here you'll find traditional networking hubs, switches, and routers, as well as Wi-Fi networking basestations and USB hubs and Thunderbolt docks.
Networking hub, switch, or router — which do you need? This question can be a bit of a stumbling block for anyone putting together a media-production system. Fortunately, the answer isn't that complicated.
Hubs are the simplest and most affordable networking tools, since they simply transmit all incoming data to all connected devices indiscriminately. They aren't terribly efficient, but they're an effective way to connect multiple devices when you aren't concerned with high-data throughput (e.g., high-resolution/track-count audio). On the other hand, the live-sound techs here at Sweetwater have found that if you want a secure, wired connecting between your laptop and your live digital mixer, then a hub is all you need.
Switches are significantly more sophisticated and efficient than network hubs. With a switch, networked devices only send data to their intended recipient. This frees up a ton of bandwidth for extensive data needs such as high-track-count audio or high-def video. If you're distributing high-resolution audio via Dante or RedNet, then you're far better off with a network switch than a standard hub.
Routers perform the same function as network switches, but they can also host shared internet connections, which is something that can't be done with either hubs or switches. Wireless routers, such as Apple's AirPort devices, perform the same function as standard wired routers, only via Wi-Fi. In many instances, you'll need a wireless router to establish a Wi-Fi network between your iPad and your Wi-Fi-equipped digital mixer.
Data hubs and docks are far simpler than network devices. Essentially, they turn a single connection into multiple connections. Need more USB ports to accommodate your audio interfaces, external hard drives, and other peripherals? Just grab a USB hub and you're all set. In the case of Thunderbolt, a Thunderbolt dock lets you break out this high-speed connection into several other connection types, including USB 3, HDMI, and Ethernet, while passing Thunderbolt connectivity to additional devices.
Sorting out networking and data distribution can be confusing, especially if you're putting together a totally new system. If you're struggling to make sense of it all, then take the stress out of the experience by calling one of our Sales Engineers. We're always happy to help you build the media system that best fits your needs.
